Marshall has been very vocal over the past year or two about being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, and how he works to cope with it. If anything he's shown significant personal growth. I wouldn't worry about him being a problem on the field or in the locker room.
I also like acquiring a quality veteran that hasn't played on many good teams. Guys like that can get very hungry when that title shot comes around, and that makes them dangerous.
I would recommend to everyone that they listen to the podcast Peter King did a while back with Marshall. It's a good interview and will give a lot of insight into Marshall's past. I listened to it when it came out, and I didn't come away with the impression that Marshall would be a problem player. Link - ( New Window )
Good signing; at that money/years it's a no brainer.
I wouldn't be surprised if Reese is targeting one of the tight ends in round 1 now. If I had to put a bet on who our pick is right now I'm going with the Miami kid.
Possible. If Hankins isn't re-signed, and it seems like that may be the case, I think the odds go up for a DE that can slide in at DT.

Well, hey.. we finally agree on something! We're on the same page with this.
I haven't looked into this so any help is appreciated
I think Brandon Marshall is a very dangerous receiver who can cause big problems for NFL defenses.
So they signed a guy - at below market value - who you admit causes problems for NFL teams, and yet you are "ambivalent" about it?
Strange...
Because we still have a non-existent running game behind an inferior run blocking offensive line.
And the people who can really improve those areas in free agency are not accepting 6 million dollars a year. So the goal should be to constantly improve the team and not just to hold onto money waiting for a non-existent player at a position of the most need (or to overpay at a position of the most need). The Giants just added a really good player for LESS than he was worth. If you can't get on board with that, then I don't know what to say.
At that price it's a good addition if he can be a decent teammate.
...and how much of the year-two money is guaranteed. From what we can tell in March, Marshall looks like a wonderful complement to Beckham and Shepard.
Posters fretting about his age have a valid point. Most receivers are well past their peak by 33, with the vast majority enjoying their most productive seasons between 25 and 31:
But that's the wrong standard to apply to this signing. The Giants don't need the 2007-2013 Brandon Marshall - or even the 2015 Brandon Marshall - and they aren't paying for that guy.
RE: RE: RE: RE: I remember Prince trying to cover him
But for this season, upgrading from Cruz to Marshall is huge. Marshall had a 1500 yard season 2 years ago, last year his production suffered bc Decker got hurt and Ryan Fitzpatrick sucked balls. I think he's still got a couple strong seasons in the tank, and being option 2 with defenses chasing OBJ will open up a lot for him
Great move, and reasonable price
RE: RE: RE: RE: I remember Prince trying to cover him
lots of incentives on his part. I can also see the Giants using that 11 personnel grouping 95% of the time again and this helps free up receivers against that cover 2 also. Cruz wasn't what he was last year and teams knew that and a better outside receiver would have had a bigger year IMO. I think Marshall could bring that. His height and wing span will also help Eli out as he tends to miss high too. Lastly, the back-shoulder fade route has been missing for a few years, since Nicks left and I think Eli needs that back in his arsenal.
but people need to consider that Beckham will be receiving the double teams leaving Marshall one on one for the majority of the time. Marshall will be dangerous in the red zone and the intermediate range receiver this offense has been desperate for. Now if they add a receiving TE in the draft and upgrade the offensive line then this offense could be special.
Marshall's value can come without him catching 100 passes.
If his "presence" forces defenses to change how the Giants offense is covered, that is value in itself.
You want to double Odell? Ok, they have Shepard underneath against lesser defenders in one-on-one situations or Marshall on in-cuts.
Everyone wins. With a few more moves, you can have a situation where the Giants are more explosive even if Odell catches fewer passes, similar to Julio Jones and the Falcons last year.
If we can develop a 450 point offense to offset what I believe will be a drop in the quality of defense we had played last year, that will be fine.
Marshall is a better downfield threat than Cruz or Shepard thanks to his height. And with Beckham still likely to draw doubles, that means BM will see plenty of single coverage.
If the OL can give him time, Eli will try to get the ball to the downfield WR every time he's single covered (and sometimes when he's not). BM's going to convert more of those opportunities then Randle did 2 years ago and Cruz/Lewis/King did last season. D's are going to pay if they shade their coverage to Beckham as much as they did this past season.
Marshall is going to pile up a shit load of catches
Teams are not going to adjust away from Beckham for Marshall - that's insane. Beckham is a touchdown waiting to happen any play. Teamsare going to have to double Beckham still, and try to give help on Marshall. Shepard is likely seeing the same looks as before.
This is a huge add. Marshall is physical and big enough that he is almost always "open". Those wasted 2-3 yard pasess that Donnel and Tye used to get Marshall can turn into 5-10 yarders pretty easily.
This guy should be Eli's new security blanket
RE: I haven't looked into this so any help is appreciated
Guys like Garcon, Pryor, D. Jackson, Stills, etc. are all looking for at least $10 mil a year. Great move by the Giants. Now they can spend that money elsewhere. You go, Jerry Reese!!
RE: RE: I haven't looked into this so any help is appreciated
..missed a game and came back much earlier than anyone expected? Could that be the reason for a subpar year?
He had Bryce Petty at QB for 1/3 of the season. That's the #1 reason for the subpar #s. They also lost Decker early and Fitz reverted to his career norms so even with Fitz at QB, they were getting below average play from the position.
Character I question a bit, but giants must feel different otherwise.
Slade...run run run away!!
What about his character (other than that of his earlier days) is in question? Not being facetious, legit question. I haven't anything I can remember painting him in a negative light. Seems like a very loyal teammate too.

This is a great signing, the money is great and the fit is great. This will help the Oline a lot also, the safeties now move back, opening up the running game. I wanted this guy here and he will not be a problem in the locker room, in fact the opposite.
They can get Whitworth on a 2 year deal, the DT, Guard, running back, and tight end can be had in the draft. Get Whitworth, no need to be conservative now, go for it, that would give us a 2 year window for another ring.
if the Giants can get Fasano signed. The money saved on Marshall should easily cover a Fasano contract. I know he isn't a sexy name, but adding a top blocking TE would really help the OL and the run game. The Giants can then grab one of these young TEs in the draft and really upgrade the position.
I like the signing because of the price.....we have limited cap, whether we want to admit it or not, and the goal is not just to sign guys, to replace players, but to upgrade the position....if Marshall can stay healthy, he is a definite upgrade over Cruz.....
A smart GM realizes, that he can't have all stars at every position, but if he can replace guys with guys that upgrade the position, he has done his job.....
...or someone else, I sure ain't gonna smile about our free agent dollars going to Brandon Marshall.
I'll say it again... wide receiver is not a high priority on this team.
It takes a back seat to:
TE
OT
OG
RB
LB
I couldn't disagree more. I think it's a huge need. Not as big as OL but there was no one else on the roster to divert attention from OBJ. Now there is. It will open up things for him as well as Sheppard. Now Jerry, go and improve the O-line and I'll consider it a successful off season.

And it's still only Wednesday, March 8. Free agency doesn't officially begin until tomorrow, and the draft is still two months away.

Well, Marshall is considered one of the top blocking WR.
Regardless - what FA running back and/or OL would you have signed?
And never mind the fact that signing Marshall doesn't preclude them from signing anyone else if they want.

2nd tier signings, that's about it.
Put another way, swimming in the shallow pool.

What does the cap situation look like? Does the team have money to make a couple impact signings after this or no?

Not really. They can restructure/cut guys if they need more cap room...

have more opportunity now

Really exciting start for the offseason.

Thanks, Eric. Time for me to figure out how to use the hacking tools that presented themselves yesterday!
