Some of you are ridiculous.
Brown Recluse : 3/11/2017 11:53 am : link
If they sign him, you'll change your tune. Just like you did with every other "bad" player the Giants signed. Once they don Giants blue, all is forgiven.

This wouldn't be the worst signing in the world.

As horrible as Nassib and Johnson are, I'd rather have either. Or even give Wenning the job. Anyone but this failure.

Nassib was awful..Johnson probably even worse. Smith has flaws, but he's more experienced than either of the two, in that Johnson hasn't thrown a pass in what, 6 years?

Not sure how this can be perceived as a bad move if the $$ is right. The guy might not be great, but keep in mind he played for NY's minor league team and is a former high end pick. Watch this guy end up being fantastic in preseason (hopefully that's all he'll have to play). I'd rather have a guy with some potential than a lousy Curtis Painter type.

That's the thing - you think the league is OL starved, try signing a halfway decent QB.

For a QB to go .500 in Eli's place, he'd have to be better than halfway decent, and that would command a lot of money (see Osweiler, Brock and Glennon, Mike).

That's true. I guess we could do worse. I'd take a look at Josh McCown or TJ Yates first, but you do want a guy who at least has some NFL starts.

Backup QBs Are Not Cheap
Jim in Tampa : 3/11/2017 12:08 pm : link
The Bucs offered Glennon 8 mil per to stay on as a backup.

Geno has experience starting and some tools. He would actually be their best backup QB in quite a while. If he hadn't played of the Jets I think more people would be on board with the idea.

I was thinking the same thing.
He's a big guy, maybe TE-convert in mind.If he can block, 4OLs,2(1 as a designated OL) blocking TEs, who might be better than our 5+1 last year.

Sometimes they're cheap and sometimes they aren't. Depends on a number of variables.

Kind of an outlier, and questionable situation since the Bucs aren't paying their QB real money yet. 8 million a year for a backup QB is absolutely not the going rate around the league.

I'd rather draft an unknown prospect.
Smith would be an adequate #2.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/11/2017 1:23 pm : link
They can draft a developmental QB on day 3, and carry him (or Keith Wenning) as a healthy scratch or possibly on the practice squad for a year. They did the same thing in Nassib's rookie year, with Curtis Painter as the #2. Eli is four years older now, which makes insurance more expensive.

BTW, a dozen QBs have started for the Jets since November 2004. For some reason, I thought that was worth mentioning.

IDK... Nassib looked awful in the preseason last year, but he was usually good on the VERY rare occasions he got regular season game action.

Geno Smith is an untrustworthy human being, let alone an untrustworthy football player. I'd rather go with Nassib.

At the very least a good back up. Has played in an organizational nuthouse his whole career. This could be a good move for both parties. I tell you this: he is better than fucking Johnson, who has done zero.

Bob in Newburgh : 3/11/2017 4:07 pm : link
Geno Smith got to start about 4 games with a relatively healthy Eric Decker, and nada for a supporting receiving core.

Assuming you are putting OBJ, Marshall and Shepherd out with him Geno Smith can and will win games.

Most legitimate Plan B QB we have looked at in some time.
Well that's a leap
burtmanjack : 3/11/2017 4:18 pm : link
Racism is the lazy man's argument here in this thread, where there is absolutely NO plausible objective evidence, and your accusation is based on nothing more than your own assumptions.

You make very valid points as to why -- on a football basis only -- Smith is being judged harshly here and without consideration of the entire context he was asked to perform in.

But -- even if you disagree with them, as is your right -- the prior posters have a lot of other evidence that supports the reasonableness of their (admittedly subjective, like yours) opinion.

So let's keep it real -- there is enough ground for a good-faith football debate here. Let's leave the politics to where they are legitimately implicated (which is sadly in too many places these days).

Peace.
For the right price
Milton : 3/11/2017 4:28 pm : link
Geno Smith would make an excellent addition. It's not like they're bringing him in to be the starter and handing him the keys. He has a good set of tools to run McAdoo's offense and given enough time to learn behind Eli, Smith could be very effective if called upon.

Stop it with the racist crap. If it was Russel Wilson who somehow wanted to be Eli's backup you wouldn't hear a negative word. Also half the people on here are saying to go with Josh Johnson instead.

Geno, for someone picked in a similar spot as someone named Drew Brees, has for all intents and purposes been a poor pro, with weird locker room stories to go along with the poor play.
Maybe Eli can turn his career around

I have seen enough of Geno Smith.

He is terrible and not a player that I would want as a back up.
He is like Cutler really good tools but not a good player.

Even the Jets do not want him and their need is significantly greater than the Giants.

If Eli ever got hurt there is no way I would want Geno leading the team down the field. He is a turnover waiting to happen.

Jets have Petty and Hackenberg. No reason for Smith. For all the Smith hate are two back ups last year whee a guy who got a ton of push here on BBI by the Cuse and upstate NY guys. Dude was a solid college QB for a program yet hasn't mattered since McNabb graduated and a guy who shouldn't have been on the roster.

Smith did a lot more and showed a lot more than Nassib ever did in college and not surprisingly fell apart at the cross town shit show that the Jets have become. I'll take him over a healthy Nassib. Both are guys who shiosmt never start a game unless Eli gets hurt.

At this point the need to draft an heir apparent is closer than it ever has been. Maybe a Trubisky falls to RD 2 but Smith for a year is not the End of Days
Geno sucks, cmon. The Jets chose Petty (unproven), Hackenburg
PatersonPlank : 3/11/2017 6:05 pm : link
(or whatever, also unproven and likely sucky), and Fitzpatrick (proven but sucky) all over him.

Can you honestly say he's worse than Nassib or Johnson? They invested a 2nd and 3rd in the two guys they kept. Sure teams choose guys they picked over guys they didn't all the time. And they are still looking for a QB.

He's supposed to never ever take a meaningful snap. If the OL was so fucking shitty I'd have almost zero worries. Even as bad as it is Eli didn't miss a snap. Anyone gettin excised over this needs. To get out of the house more and away from the computer
Yes I think Geno is worse than Nassib

I think Johnson sucks too. I don't want either one. We need to get a "decent" veteran backup QB and draft an Eli replacement this year (or soon).

guys, i dont think geno is worse than nassib. geno actually has starting experience and won some games...im not saying he is a stud, but he is probably a cheap contract that can win a game or two if necessary based on the talent he will have around him. again, not saying he is the future, but i am 100% okay with this as i believe that if eli goes down our season is over so might as well save some money. imo geno is better than nassib and josh johnson.

I'm fine w that. Just don't think Geno or Nassib would be any different. And since Nassib has never taken a meaningful snap in the NFL I think your dislike of Geno is fine but No one can assume that any of these guys is anything other than a disaster of Eli gets hurt.

Jay on the Island : 3/11/2017 6:46 pm : link
but he is a much better choice than a guy like Sanchez or Gabbert. Smith has talent and has flashed in the past. Perhaps he can develop into a solid backup after learning from Eli.

I agree, that organization is a disaster, look at them now. They have like 15 QB draft choices on the roster and all of them are basically the same player. This kid is not Jamarcus Russell, he's mobile and has a strong arm. He looked like he might be the real deal a few years ago until his teammate broke his jaw.
