MTN-G-man : 3/12/2017 1:45 pm
Its like the pneumococcal Pneumonia commercial.

than expected......

Giants want to throw 17M at him? He'll take it and take his sweet time signing the tag......hey, maybe Jerry can set up a JPP clock in the locker room?

hit the lottery. He more than most know how fragile his career and economic future can be

He probably feels some loyalty to the Giants, and maybe even would prefer being a Giant.

But the financial security of his family comes first, as it should and would with all of us.

Don't forget 2015. He got paid over 8 million for 7.5 games. JPP has been paid almost $20,000,000.00 for less than 20 games over the last 2 years. I get that he is talented and the DE market dictates his price, but in all honesty football is a team game. Ask your self would New England bring JPP back, especially after the fireworks incident? Or would they go out and bring in a Vet and draft a new DE and save money so they could fix other parts of their team???

I like JPP and would love for him to sign a long term deal but it seems likely we lose a young healthy Hankins in the process.

It's a 2 way business. The Giants should give him a time frame to agree or move on.
He is getting 17 MIL

For many of us, he has made enough money to last for generations if invested properly. However, many of these guys live a different lifestyle than most, being misled by agents, accountants, business "partners" etc. That's why you always hear about athletes being broke within a few years of retiring. Look at Brunell and Kosar as a few NFL examples. Or Antoine Walker in the NBA. The guy made over 100 million over his career and lost it all.
I'm so tired of the WWTPD comparison.

We get it. The Patriots are awesome except when they play us in the superbowl. But why is every single aspect of the team compared to the Patriots? It's tiresome.

taxes and agent fees and he saw less than half of that 10 million. I love how people act like its tax free and 10 million is 10 million it doesnt work like that
It's pretty clear
EddieNYG : 3/12/2017 3:46 pm : link
JPP was tagged by the Giants because they didn't want him to hit free agency and the two sides weren't close on a long term deal.

This idea that JPP is holding the Giants hostage makes no sense to me. The Giants are well aware of the salary cap and how it works. They planned on tagging JPP and knew how much of a cap hit it had in terms of free agency.

Fans who are upset about this are upset because the Giants didn't target the top FA OL.

Replacing JPP would not be easy and I'm glad the Giants tagged him so he's under their control until they can come to an agreement.

My point about bringing up the Patriots is no player is bigger than the team mentality ( except Tom of course ). They let Collins and Jones go and they get to the Super Bowl and win it. Do I think JPP is a good player? Yes. Do I think he is important to the defense? Yes. But he doesn't play at that high a level that he should hold NYG hostage with the cap. This is my opinion. We will lose Hankins because of JPP. We might lose Robinson as well. The defense will still be good but what if Snacks gets hurt? What if Vernon gets hurt? Hell, JPP will probably get hurt then what?

It doesn't take a genius to understand that you want to keep JPP, it take a genius to replace him, keep your young healthy DT, 3rd down nickel LB and improve your OL without missing a beat.....like the Patriots do.

LMAO was thinking the exact same thing. yea his family really must have struggled with the 10 mill from last season. god they have it tough.
Very well said, Rj ...
Manny in CA : 3/13/2017 2:07 am : link

Sure, he's a terrific player, but paying him that much money - that HURTS the team, on BOTH sides of the ball.

Truth is - he 's holding out for that $85M deal (and every day, he's more-and-more convinced that he's holding all the cards).

Even with taxes and all that BS, he made millions last year and the year before and h BTW his rookie contract was worth $20.05 million...so forgive those of us that think he has made plenty and can take a bit less for the good of the team. This is his agent and ego. I am aware of taxes etc.

GM jr had his chance last season and chose to offer one of the prove it deals BBI loves so much. BBI is now butt hurt that JPP proved it and wants to get paid the market value that GM jr had helped establish. Don't blame the player, he proved it blame the guy with the dough who didnt have guts eniugh to sign a longer term deal when he had a chance and then waited around for the offseason to try and get a deal done

Actually the one year prove it deal last year was smart. Pierre-Paul had much to prove.

Why blame anyone? Maybe JPP wasn't ready to sign a long term deal at what he perceived was reduced value. Maybe HE wanted to prove it.

The fans' dream offseason might not be the team's dream offseason.

What if Jerry Reese did the right thing last year, JPP is taking care of business now and the Giants were well aware of this possibility prior to FA and prepared to deal with it as part of their plan?

But he didn't have to prove it to the Giants. He took the discount because he wanted to be here. He had more money on the table for a longer term from the Cardinals sight unseen.

I hope JPP gets every single dime he can. He's a face of the franchise and has earned the laundry that is strapped on his back. The owners across the NFL are making billions of dollars and hence why the ever increasing salary cap. Everyone has their job to do. Mara has already publicly stated he wants JPP's deal done. JPP has already done his job by setting his market value. Abrams has his job to do. Jerry needs to do his job and pay the man.
I'd like to know what the open market offers look like
JonC : 3/13/2017 8:07 am : link
because I strongly doubt NYG goes anywhere near $17M per.

Not sure they'd go as high as $14M.

He made 8 million in 2015, then 10 million in 2016, and now is set to make 17 million. That 35 million is on top of the roughly 15 million he pulled in from his rookie contract.

JPP is a very rich man having made about 50 million over his career. Nothing but love for the guy trying to get as much as he can, but dude could retire after this season and be set for life.
