It really looks like this thing is going to explode and dump upwards of 2 feet of snow on Long Island. I've seen some forecasts for up to 28 inches but that is going to be isolated where the heavy snow bands set up. In those bands, you may get 3-4 inches in a an hour. There may be some sleet mixed in at times because of the intensity of the storm. Along with Thunder snow.
The big concern is, there could be 70mph winds. This is going to be dangerous.
I am expecting Blizzard Warnings either late tonight or tomorrow morning.
This is not something to be taken lightly. Long Island is going to be shut down on Tuesday.
There is a small room for error here with a slight shift in the track but most models seem to agree with the scenario I just pointed out. I will use this thread if any updates are needed by lowering or even raising possible snow totals.
One thing is for sure, this is going to be a dangerous storm!
Everyone else is going to get a LOT of snow
I'm pretty sure you're not going to have anything to worry about
Any thoughts from you would be greatly appreciated!!
Your the Sy'56 of weather!!!
Plus another big (potentially) at end of week.
that's the energy they've been talking about at end of week here..another coastal

DC area is on the edge. Some models are saying an inch or two, some are saying well over a foot. In your area it's likely you get at least 4-6, but it could be a lot more depending on the storm track.
F' storm..
A bad year to.buy new snowShoes

That's the spirit and reassurance I'm looking for.
As far as mixing goes, there may be a little but I don't think enough to really hold down totals.
But again, a slight shift in the projected path could change a lot. Will update tomorrow.

Same here. What are they excited about? Shoveling? Possibly losing power at home? Hazardous driving? Canceling important appointments?
I don't get it.
And for those of us in the Hudson Valley if U don't already use Hudsonvalleyweather.com U should. Also very good!(click on "Today's Weather" for daily that has good & usually pretty damn accurate info!

I'm praying for you to be disappointed.
"Bonus Day" for the city's big employer was this time in March; and in many subsequent years I remember disruptive snowfalls that very week (when car dealers were trying to make a killing).
Hard for me to sympathize with my new South Carolina friends when 2" of snow closes schools for days and public and private offices for at least 24 hours.
(I really do understand; my adopted county just doesn't have the equipment that upstate NY used to clear snow, and I certainly don't want to disturb my ridiculously low property taxes to pay for such. I'm happy to stay snug by my fireplace for a day or two.)

Joey, you remind me of the guy who viewed slide after slide in a Rorchach test and and gave each an erotic interpretation. When the psychiatrist warned the patient he might have a a problem of a sexual nature, the guy exclaimed "ME?!? Those are YOUR pornagraphic pictures!"

Lived on Browncroft Blvd back then. I was 7 years old and remember the snow piles were so high we could sled down them and get all the way across Browncroft without help
Exactly, not to mention the mess it leaves especially on your cars
Love the dry snow, can just drive my car and it all blows off!! The wet stuff I have to actually physically remove or else it iced up..
At least street parking will be canceled this week. I'm going to let the snow sit on my car until next weekend.
Seriously guys take care on this one.
Do you know BB56?
So you like snow as much as Tom, huh gidie?
All you need is one.
Just bear in mind: while it may drive through the snow better than a 2-wheel drive, it doesn't STOP any better.
Lucky for you tator tats just happen to be the greatest food ever created.
By comparison, I live in Columbia, where they sometimes close school at the first flake. So I could have a situation where my kids are off but I'm not. Then there's the question is my street will be plowed out in time...
So many hundreds of millions would literally die to change places.

I wouldn't count on anything with this storm for the DC area. It's right on the line. A small shift one way could mean little more than a dusting, and the other way could mean a snow burial. Forecast confidence is not high here at this point.
Hey bud, I live in Springfield. Shop rite is a freakin zoo. I mean it is everyday but more so now.
Anyway, fuck this storm...the city is such a disgusting mess after a blizzard. Perplexed by those who are excited. Snow is terrible unless it's under my snowboard.
Pro-tip for bachelors: Tinder/Bumble are scorching on blizzard days. Should name the storm Panty Dropper. If work is cancelled, may as well meet up with someone and get drained.
The tradeoff is you don't see the sun for a month.

Well, the Blizzard of '78 affected 55 million people and we didn't get a head count. Hurricane Camille in 1962 affected 50 million people The blizzard of 1888 probably affected 30 million people. Does the number of people affected influence the severity of the storm?
Do we really need the overly dramatic lead in?
Having to spend time with your child. How horrible fo you.

If you like that, you'll love some of the estimated productivity losses coming from computer malware infections. I'm surprised they haven't started publishing numbers in the trillions yet. Apparently the only reason there's starvation in the world is malware.

Me too! You on the DL as well, Gidiefor? Hang in there.
She goes to the kids museum and maritime center, both places pretty much every weekend since the winter started, its run its course andnwould like other stuff to do but there's only so long an 18 month old lasts in those places anyway. And yeah, there entire city will be closed tomorrow, so there's that.
I don't mind some asshole on the internet trying to call me a bad parent because they likely haven't been in the shoes. I'm a great dad, just hate being stuck inside all winter, don't see what the big deal is. Being inside all day sucks after a while without kids.

As "the asshole on the Internet" in question, let me say I have been in your shoes. My daughter is 18 and in her first year at college now. I don't know you; you may be a great dad. But being bummed because you have to spend the day with your kid instead of sticking them in day care for the day isn't exactly a dad of the year attitude. I get the cabin fever thing, but spending the day with your kid should never "blow."
This will sound trite, but the opportunity to spend time with your kid only comes once. It won't be long before they're never around. 15 years from now you won't be bemoaning the days you weren't able to put her in day care.
Drag them slowly on a sled, they think it's the greatest thing in the world.

Thanks for the lesson chief. You are right, you don't know me, stick with that and move on since you have no clue on this one. My comment was supposed to be about being stuck inside yet again this winter and wanting winter to end so we can do things outside. If you want to look into it as more than just that, then yes you are being an asshole.
Back to the storm, the latest in Stamford says 10"-12", somehow I find that light and I'd be thrilled with only a foot.
Drag them slowly on a sled, they think it's the greatest thing in the world.
She does like it, I think Wednesday she'd play in it a bit, but with the winds tomorrow she will probably take two steps and bolt back to the door. Just not really worth it (I just filled the garage with firewood so I don't have to go to the shed in the storm tomorrow).

It's my own fault, I used to do a better job of ignoring.
CT Gov banning all travel from 5 AM 3/14: WCBS Radio is dispensing with inches here or there and projecting 20" to 30" of snowfall.
I'm more worried about the trees around us than the daunting accumulation numbers.
UConn, I love ya man, but Stamford is gonna get more than 10" - 12".
jcn56, you still planning on the BBQ?
Gosh, isn't BBI great?

Yeah I don't buy the low totals, I'm expecting atleast a foot. My wife has a huge project due and just headed back to her office in Milford to try and finish before the snow starts. I have a mountain of work as well, not looking forward to catching up on Wednesday.
Stay warm everyone.
Boston did get creamed last year though.

Yeah, right. I guess it was the rear-view on your helicopter. Japan for sure.
LI: Nassau gets more than Suffolk. North Shore gets more than South Shore. It's possible the Hamptons get a mostly wind-driven rainstorm with back-end snow. I'm thinking 8-15" in Nassau, more as you go north, and 4-10" in Suffolk, more as you go north and west. If the storm track shifts 15-20 miles east of the models then LI sees mostly snow all the way to Montauk
Northern Jersey: 16-20" near NYC, higher amounts in higher elevations. Possible 28-30" in the Sussex higher elevations. Mixing is a worry from Elizabeth on south towards Central Jersey.
Central Jersey: More snow away from the coast. Central Jersey near the PA border gets hammered, 18-24". Coastal areas will face mixing issues and some rain so I'm thinking 6-12 if you're a little away from the coast and less than 6" on the immediate coast.
South Jersey: Very hard to get snow from AC on south with that track along the coast. Thinking 3" at most. Areas near Philly will get into some mixing issues like Philly itself and you could see 6-12."
Baltimore around 6" with some ice, more snow north and west of there. DC 3-6", lots of ice. Western suburbs could get 6-9." Potential for crippling ice storm in the Beltway.
Hudson Valley, especially the Mid-Hudson, the Catskills, and Eastern PA except for extreme SEPA (Philly) is the jackpot. Lots of 20-24" amounts and some areas routinely over 2 feet. Lower Hudson (Westchester and Rockland) could also be a jackpot region along with Fairfield County and New Haven (CT). Anywhere in inland Connecticut gets hammered too

Winter Weather Advisory for NYC until 8PM on 3/14. Blizzard Warning canceled. 4-8" of snow expected. www.weather.gov/nyc.
Albany totals anywhere from 18-24 expected. Albany Airport closed. The wind isn't bad yet in Schenectady, (I started shoveling around 6:00am...up to 4 inches, but very fine powder, great for skiing if you could get to a mountain!); heavy snow expected between 9:00am and 6:00pm. I'll probably break out the snow blower this afternoon.
I'm hoping this doesn't come close to the Blizzard of March 13th, 1999. That was no fun at all...

Same here - moved to ice real quick
So this morning there was a statewide state of emergency but they were still open.
Now there is a county wide state of emergency and a travel ban for non-essential personel and they are still open.
I think at this point they are just trying to save face by staying open.
My direct supervisor gave us the option depending on conditions where we are, so I'm home since I live on a hill, my poor lady though works in a hospital so she was forced to go in and they may call a code green which means she stays overnight.

Good luck with that. The forecasts are usually right. They even came close with this one as all the models showed variances--the lines between big and small totals were right in the middle of the NYC area. That's exactly what happened. I'm in fort lee and we are getting hammered, as best I can tell.

2 - 3 inches of snow per hour, 40+ mph wind gusts. 12+ inches on the ground so far, expected to snow until night. I had men's league hockey already canceled and my game is scheduled for 10pm. So I end up running over their lead and now it's completely tangled in my snowblower. Any ideas? I tried untangling it but it's completely knotted up and now freezing. I'm thinking the best thing to do is remove the auger and untangle it by hand.

I did a similar thing with a heavy duty extension cord I forgot I had to a spotlight in the middle of my lawn shining on some wreaths on a fence around Christmas. I was trying to snow blow a path to my outdoor hockey rink. f-in spoiled kids. I should have known better.
I got a big pliers and some wire snips and cut off sections as I could unwind it. It took a while, but I was done snow blowing pretty much by the time I did it.
I was worried about damaging the auger.
Be very careful clearing out all that snow.
Probably the easiest solution if it's that tightly wound up in there. with the extension cord it was tightly wound, but I was able to get slack little by little.
yup - that was some heavy snow this time ... only about 8" in Brooklyn but it's a complete mess with all the sleet, freezing rain and wind as well ...
NYC has announced that schools are open tomorrow.
Be very careful clearing out all that snow.
Clarks Summit, PA. Got at least 5 more inches after that picture was taken
My driveway is too damn big to even think about clearing it out with this much snow, it's a bitch doing it even with 4-5 inches even with a snowblower, have a buddy coming in the morning to plow it. I already did the steps and sidewalk leading to the front door and cleared a path for my dog, not doing anything else.
