Raanan: What's up with Hankins and the DT market?

Defenderdawg : 3/13/2017 7:47 am
"Hankins has been among those left hanging. It’s a surprise given that one defensive line coach in the market for a tackle prior to free agency said he was impressed with Hankins’ tape. In fact, he thought it was better than Poe’s this past season. Poe is a two-time Pro Bowl selection..."

Good for NYG

but tough year to keep a DT when you're already paying one $9M per, and a pair of $17M DEs.
From Hankins Twitter last night

It appeared he was boarding a flight somewhere
I would have to think it's injury related,

he's too good a player not to cash in.

Are Giants totally our of the picture?

Its a good defensive draft

this year. Why pay 50 mil when you can get a DT in the draft. Same with rbs.
I think Sy is correct in his thread

not sure the NFL knows or believes Hank is a $10M per talent yet. Suspect the NYG is closer to $6M, perhaps the one year prove it deal does occur in the end.
Regardless of what happens with Hankins...
Klaatu : 3/13/2017 9:12 am : link
The Giants should draft another DT this year. Bromley and Thomas are both UFAs next year, and it's anybody's guess if they'll be re-signed. If they lose Hankins, then drafting a DT becomes an imperative in my opinion.

Exactly right and given what they have for depth even if they do sign Hankins. DT should be one of our top 2 picks if they want to get someone with starting talent. And it looks like round 2 makes the most sense as there seem to be 5/6 possible picks in that round.

Not great in 2015 before the injury. Was he that good in 2016 or was he the benefit of playing with Vernon, JPP and Snacks.
It is an interesting question

be Hey you should stay here, stay healthy, and improve your stock with the opportunity to win a championship. Next year you can go to market with 2 healthy seasons under your belt and hopefully a ring.
As Raanan points out, it's not just Hankins
jcn56 : 3/13/2017 10:38 am : link
it's that whole 2nd tier of the DT market. So what I'm hoping now is that if the Giants reach a deal with JPP, it's ahead of the first of these 2nd tier DTs signing, because once one does, they're all going to fall like dominoes.

I do think we'll still need to draft a DT, but I'd rather do that while retaining Hankins.

Hankins was great in '14 and then came to camp in '15 way out of shape and it showed the entire season. He bounced back last season but not to the '14 level of production. I'd be hesitant to give him a long term contract.
Just going to post this again because there seems to be confusion

Hankins is coming off of his worst season in the NFL. He earned his lowest grade from Pro Football Focus -- and it wasn't even close. This might not be a coincidence either. Hankins was playing a new position. For the first time in his career, Hankins shifted from the one-technique defensive tackle position -- now occupied by Harrison -- and he played the 3-technique all season. Hankins is best suited to play his old position but the Giants will not move Harrison from that spot.

Based on snap counts, Bromley outperformed Hankins at LDT and took most of the 4th quarter snaps when the Giants needed a pass rush.

He wasn't special. He flashed 'special", regularly in year two but hasn't much if at all since. Don't read me wrong he is a solid DT and his strength is stopping the run, but he couldn't hold snacks jock in that regard sooo...

How can they give him a one year deal given our cap situation? If they do that, they can't push salary into bonus $ and spread the cap hit.
Just saw that the NFLN morning show listed Hankins
Jimmy Googs : 3/13/2017 12:13 pm : link
as one the top 8 or so Free Agents still available.

So any General Manager watching the show will now be bidding for him pretty hard...
I can think of 2 other DT's we didn't sign..
Giant John : 3/13/2017 12:18 pm : link
One to Washington and the other to Minn. Both proved to be mistakes. So now we are making the same mistake all over again.

It's not ideal but they could find a few million to squeeze him in, but I don't know what ballpark NYG values him at.

This - increase in weight has cut into level of play and lessened potential. If he can lose the weight I would want him back
Hankins is more easliy
Doomster : 3/13/2017 12:53 pm : link
replaceable, than JPP.....a decision will have to be made for one or the other, you are not going to get both.....

I agree, Hankins has not been lights out as a DT, the Last two seasons.....solid, but not to the point where he commands big money.....

We have overpaid on several positions.....it's unavoidable in the NFL......but you can't pay everyone....the cap does not allow this.....

Even if JPP reaches a deal, it may only be a cap savings of 4-5M, if similar to Vernon's deal......last year, we carried a cap surplus of about 10M the whole season....right now we have about 5M......and I don't think Reese wants to go down that same road, that put him in cap hell after 2011....
My worry with Hankins to being resigned
giantgiantfan : 3/13/2017 1:19 pm : link
is if Snacks goes down. Hankins is a great option to slide over in that scenario. DT will need to be addressed in the draft unless they know something about Bromley or some other DT on the roster.
we could resign him back loaded style and with bonus now
idiotsavant : 3/13/2017 1:21 pm : link
to fit in with current short term status of JPP contract.

then, revisit both next year at this time to coordinate.
3 years
idiotsavant : 3/13/2017 1:24 pm : link
good signing bonus, league min year one, but guaranteed good money years two and three.

JPP would have the choice to restructure next year so we can rationalize DL total

and to allow for an all offense draft
and look to DL early in 2018 draft
