- Tough break for Nimmo, outwith grade 1 hammy strain. Really nice spring to this point. No longer has a shot making the opening day roster which sucks for him but probably better in the long run
-3 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, BB, K final line for Crismatt vs. DR. Stuff won't pop off the page but solid line vs. a great team
-The Mets LHP relievers have not pitched well, to the point Adam Wilk has stood out, however Collins noted Wilk is not in the mix for the pen because of SP depth issues. Makes the Ynoa decision even more curious
-Minor knee surgery for Flexen, kid needs to stay healthy. Often dinged
-today RHP Noah Syndergaard, RHP Robert Gsellman, LHP David Roseboom, RHP Chase
Bradford, RHP Ben Rowen
I definitely don't overreact to spring training, but Reed is the kind of player where the Mets have no margin for error. Without Familia, if Reed is pitching batting practice, the BP turns from hope to survive until Familia returns to a major disaster waiting to happen.
I hope he gets is straightened out, but it's the kind of reason I wanted to add more legit veteran options to the pen.
I'd still give Papelbon a call.

Last I heard Papelbon is "dealing with a family issue". It was odd so little buzz about him.
I still have pretty major concerns about the bullpen.
Neither one of them is an ideal closer. There is a reason Salas had to settle for 1 year 3 million and it's not because teams think he's a closing candidate. If Reed doesn't have a good season the Mets are in major trouble. I'm not yet worried about him however.

Agree, and to be clear I'm not worried about him yet either, it's March 13. I am however worried about the backup plan if Reed just isn't Reed from the past two years.
I'd still look into David Robertson.
and he's not your typical closer.
Suspicion is they didn't want to cloud the positive vibes of the WBC with a domestic violence issue. Could be total BS but that's what people are guessing. His suspension is expected to be 30-36 games. If he gets more (without some waiver etc Familia would lose a year of service time and have to wait an additional year before FA and one would assume the PA would go nuts over that).
Jay Bruce is taking grounders at first base on the main field, Tebow is in the outfield and the Mets haven't released a lineup yet
I thought Tebow was done in Mets spring training games?

Collins said he wouldn't be appearing in games. The fields are right next to each other so he may yet be simply taking shags in the OF. Rosario was taking OF balls the other day before a game.

Tim Tebow playing LF for #Mets today. Had previously been no plans to bring him back over. Apparent shortage of players forced it. #LGM

I hate to have to couch this every time but I have nothing against Tebow and it's fine hes here but it's a joke claiming because of the WBC etc that Tim Tebow represents the next option. They must think we are idiots lol.
Is Smoker a viable candidate?
Is Smoker a viable candidate?
Wheeler is not an option. Both he and Warthen have noted he has residual soreness longer than most pitchers. He generally can't even pick up a ball until 3 days following a start (and this was pre-surgery) the other SP are back throwing after 2. Smoker has some upside but he may not even make the team let alone be the closer. Has to show MLB success before he would ever be considered for such a role. It's likely Reed, then Robles or Salas
Lugo, Wilk, Montero, Knapp, Gilmartin to open the season
Sucks both Nimmo and Flexen will miss the open of the season but what can you do? Sadly both guys have been injury prone to this point. Big season for both guys. Flexen hopefully can pitch well enough that he can be in the mix for starts down the stretch if they need another SP.
Sewald's spring has done nothing to chance my opinion on that.
I think he's only allowed one hit this spring. If we are truly taking the best guys forward he should be in consideration IMO.
I think he was already sent back to minor league camp
Could easily be Boscan over a guy like Gilmartin but seemingly Lugo, Wilk (just because TC mentioned him in the AAA rotation), Montero, Knapp would be 4 of the 5. Knapp is light on stuff so he might get smacked around in LV but I think he has a shot to be a big leaguer.

Really surprised how few games have been televised. Then again, the Mets never seem all that intent on capitalizing on an excited fan base. Why no fan fest? "because it's hard to corral players in the off-season"? Please.

Seems strangely quiet this year. Today's game isn't even on the radio. For a home Thor start. Lol
Yup. Agree completely.
long man, Sewald, Blevins, Smoker, Robles, Salas, Reed (7)
Reyes, Granderson, Cespedes, Duda, Walker, Bruce, Cabrera, TDA (8)
Ty Kelly, Lagares, Reynolds, Wilmer Flores, R. Rivera (5)
Long man is probably between Montero and Gilmartin with Familia replacing whoever after April. There's also a chance we go with a 4 man bench and bring even another reliever in April (apparently the Mets dont want to push the starters early). If that's the case and Edgin pulls it together between now and the season they could bring 3 lefties north (Edgin out of options helps his case)
Wright would replace Reynolds if he makes it back eventually.
His cap is probably in the 180-190 range. No real reason they will need to curb his innings artificially. I'd prefer not having a guy go from short innings to long in-season, the reverse in terms of health seems like a better plan. Lugo has relatively few innings in his career, he could use some more.
Sandy Alderson just indicated on @MLBNetwork that Zack Wheeler's season limit will be around 125 IP. Dan Warthen had previously said 110ish.
How wonderful of MLB to let him pitch in the WBC and announce his suspension afterward.

Standing O's for both (as well as for his weak groundout).
His popularity is still baffling to me even if it is a weird FL thing.
I obviously know he gets white hot and carries the team at times and also follows those hot streaks up with some miserable cold streaks, but.. most hitters don't hit their average on a month to month basis.
I am having this debate with a friend and just always wondered how "streaky" Duda really is relative to most other hitters.

"Although the model explains most of the streaky hitting in baseball, some
model misfit is present. Among all regular players, there are more streaky
hitters than one would predict on the basis of this exchangeable model. On
the basis of this observation, we identified the players who were unusually
streaky in the patterns of getting hits, home runs, and strikeouts. But there is
little evidence on the basis of this study that particular players are generally
streaky players that appeared streaky in the pattern of hits/outs did not
appear streaky in the pattern of strikeouts. This suggests that it may be
hard to find players that exhibit streaky behavior across seasons, although
this would be an interesting study for future work."

It's a complete myth. He had one extended cold streak in 2015 and none at all in 2014. His month to month splits are actually eerily in line. Id actually argue based on that that he's more consistent than average players. Every good baseball player that ever lived had an extended cold streak before (Trout had a terrible month last year/Piazza had laughably bad months) and just about everyone in our lineup has shown to be even more streaky in their careers (Hi Granderson, Hi Bruce, Hi Neil Walker, Hi Cespedes, Hi Cabrera)
Z - I think a lot of that cold streak had to do with his back. He was terrible for a while then went on the DL, came back and started to hit again before hurting the back again.
Quote:
entire life last year that lasted months and everyone talks about him like its nothing. lol. Baffling.

Yeah thats another thing that often gets overlooked. He was battling a couple things during that cold streak anyway. My point is who cares? Every single player has had a horrid month. Its amazing to me how Duda gets shit on when our lineup is filled with more streaky players and streaks are part of the game in general anyway. I love Granderson but holy shit the guy is hot and cold month to month more than anyone Ive ever seen. It's who he his and even that's fine.
Ok rant over. hehe
clap clap clap! :)

There was a Loney is better than Duda thread? LOL.
I agree with what you said with one qualifier....if he's healthy. The Mets waited too long relying on Wright to come back and maybe failed to really address 3B , I hope they don't make the same mistake with Duda. Back injuries are the worst, robbed the careers of many baseball players. Hopefully with Smith in the wings, if Duda can't come back healthy the Mets don't prolong waiting.
Quote:
see what they want to see. I'm really not interested in some prolonged streakiness debate (we have these every year) but when people decide James Loney is "better" than Duda etc. It becomes ridiculous. Duda is a top 10 player at his position and we are lucky to have him.

PJ,
It started getting nuts on twitter. People were acting like James Loney was Will Clark (I have a weird affinity for Will Clark, my uncle and Grandpa are huge Giants fans) so I grew up casually following them as well. Then the "real" Loney showed himself lol. Perfect world Duda has a big year and makes the Smith decision a tough one.
I also dont want to add Sewald to the 40 man until we know he can stay there which might be part of it. What good is adding Sewald for Familia if when Familia comes back from suspension you just have to remove him and risk losing him again? (yes I know there are a few other spots but this would be based on those spots already gone too for Ty kelly, ect.)
So why is this one taking so long, considering that the prosecuting attorney in Fort Lee, N.J. dismissed the case back on Dec. 15, nearly three months ago?
A few weeks ago Mets GM Sandy Alderson speculated that MLB would wait until after the WBC to announce any suspension for Familia.
He didnt say that would be a self-serving decision but obviously MLB benefits from having as many high-profile players as possible play in an event it pushes hard to promote.
Hypocritical if MLB waits to announce Familia ban until after WBC
However, MLB sources make the point that the league doesnt have unilateral power to suspend a player from the WBC, as the tournament is held jointly with the Players Association and international federations. Which means the union would have to consent to any suspension.
In addition, sources say Familias visa issues at the beginning of spring training delayed his interview with MLB.
Whatever the complications, however, its hard to believe MLB hasnt concluded its investigation.
Even if the league couldnt suspend Familia from the WBC, the optics would have been bad to have him playing in the tournament after announcing a regular-season suspension, especially after commissioner Rob Manfred set a strong example in the first year of MLBs domestic violence policy with the suspensions of Chapman and Jose Reyes.

Probably the best Mets showing yet and Gsellman 39 is especially high.
This is the Rosario excerpt.
An exceptional athlete who has become more explosive and coordinated as his body has matured, Rosario projects as a plus defender at shortstop. His recent physical maturation has also aided his offensive output, though his raw power (which was on par with all but the games best power-hitting prospects at the Futures Game) hasnt shown up on paper yet. If he starts to get to it in games, and if more raw power comes as Rosarios frame continues to mature, hes going to be a monster. I consider him the best bet to top this list next year.
