NFT: Mets Chat 3/13/2017

DanMetroMan : 3/13/2017 9:00 am
- Tough break for Nimmo, outwith grade 1 hammy strain. Really nice spring to this point. No longer has a shot making the opening day roster which sucks for him but probably better in the long run

-3 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, BB, K final line for Crismatt vs. DR. Stuff won't pop off the page but solid line vs. a great team

-The Mets LHP relievers have not pitched well, to the point Adam Wilk has stood out, however Collins noted Wilk is not in the mix for the pen because of SP depth issues. Makes the Ynoa decision even more curious

-Minor knee surgery for Flexen, kid needs to stay healthy. Often dinged

-today RHP Noah Syndergaard, RHP Robert Gsellman, LHP David Roseboom, RHP Chase
Bradford, RHP Ben Rowen

Reed has been terrible
pjcas18 : 3/13/2017 9:39 am : link
I read a tweet that Warthen found a delivery flaw and they're working on it.

I definitely don't overreact to spring training, but Reed is the kind of player where the Mets have no margin for error. Without Familia, if Reed is pitching batting practice, the BP turns from hope to survive until Familia returns to a major disaster waiting to happen.

I hope he gets is straightened out, but it's the kind of reason I wanted to add more legit veteran options to the pen.

I'd still give Papelbon a call.

Last I heard Papelbon is "dealing with a family issue". It was odd so little buzz about him.

Yeah, we really need Reed to be at least close to what he was last year. If he's not, we're in big trouble.

I still have pretty major concerns about the bullpen.

Neither one of them is an ideal closer. There is a reason Salas had to settle for 1 year 3 million and it's not because teams think he's a closing candidate. If Reed doesn't have a good season the Mets are in major trouble. I'm not yet worried about him however.
Salas
DanMetroMan : 3/13/2017 10:05 am : link
last 2 seasons 4.06 era over 147 appearances. I'm happy he's back as depth but he'd be the worst closer in baseball on paper.

Agree, and to be clear I'm not worried about him yet either, it's March 13. I am however worried about the backup plan if Reed just isn't Reed from the past two years.

I'd still look into David Robertson.
I think Robles
pjcas18 : 3/13/2017 10:11 am : link
might be the guy I trust most if Reed can't go (back to back days or something).

and he's not your typical closer.

How long will Familias suspension be?

Suspicion is they didn't want to cloud the positive vibes of the WBC with a domestic violence issue. Could be total BS but that's what people are guessing. His suspension is expected to be 30-36 games. If he gets more (without some waiver etc Familia would lose a year of service time and have to wait an additional year before FA and one would assume the PA would go nuts over that).

Collins said he wouldn't be appearing in games. The fields are right next to each other so he may yet be simply taking shags in the OF. Rosario was taking OF balls the other day before a game.

poor Rockies. Both Dahl and Desmond to miss the beginning of the season.
I'd rather see Champ Stuart
pjcas18 : 3/13/2017 10:30 am : link
I doubt Champ hits enough to be a major league regular (although he had a decent showing in the AFL), but he could be the Mets version of Dave Roberts.

A guy on the post-season roster to steal a base or just PR and defensive replacement.

I hate to have to couch this every time but I have nothing against Tebow and it's fine hes here but it's a joke claiming because of the WBC etc that Tim Tebow represents the next option. They must think we are idiots lol.

has a great arm, + glove in CF and 70 speed. I think he may see the end of the bench one day.

Wheeler is not an option. Both he and Warthen have noted he has residual soreness longer than most pitchers. He generally can't even pick up a ball until 3 days following a start (and this was pre-surgery) the other SP are back throwing after 2. Smoker has some upside but he may not even make the team let alone be the closer. Has to show MLB success before he would ever be considered for such a role. It's likely Reed, then Robles or Salas
No chance.
ZGiants98 : 3/13/2017 11:49 am : link
Robles and Salas would be next in line and I have hard time picturing how Reed would be SO bad he loses his closer position for a whopping 10 opportunity stretch. He would have to get bombed every single outing for something like that to happen. No chance. Reed could likely get through a month (10ish games) by accident (if he suddenly sucked)

Looks
DanMetroMan : 3/13/2017 11:57 am : link
like the AAA rotation will be

Lugo, Wilk, Montero, Knapp, Gilmartin to open the season

Sucks both Nimmo and Flexen will miss the open of the season but what can you do? Sadly both guys have been injury prone to this point. Big season for both guys. Flexen hopefully can pitch well enough that he can be in the mix for starts down the stretch if they need another SP.
I still want Sewald and Ty Kelly getting roster spots
ZGiants98 : 3/13/2017 12:00 pm : link
And winning the last two positions on the team. Send Lugo, Nimmo, Conforto, TJ, Cheech, ect to AAA.

Sewald's spring has done nothing to chance my opinion on that.

I
DanMetroMan : 3/13/2017 12:02 pm : link
don't see the downside to Sewald making the team. If he's not good then he got his shot and that's it. He's performed at every level. Goeddel was 85-87 last appearance, Gilmartin is horrid. They can find 2 40 man spots (1 coming from Familia) for Sewald/Kelly if need be.
Wilfredo Boscan should be in the mix for a SP spot on Vegas
ZGiants98 : 3/13/2017 12:05 pm : link
Awful peripherals and stuff isn't exciting but decent FIP and ERA in AAA.

I think he's only allowed one hit this spring. If we are truly taking the best guys forward he should be in consideration IMO.
Curious about what you guys think of Phil Evans
Section331 : 3/13/2017 12:07 pm : link
chances of going north with the club? He's shown a good glove at 3B, appears to be getting better at 2B, and is swinging a good bat.

Could easily be Boscan over a guy like Gilmartin but seemingly Lugo, Wilk (just because TC mentioned him in the AAA rotation), Montero, Knapp would be 4 of the 5. Knapp is light on stuff so he might get smacked around in LV but I think he has a shot to be a big leaguer.

Really surprised how few games have been televised. Then again, the Mets never seem all that intent on capitalizing on an excited fan base. Why no fan fest? "because it's hard to corral players in the off-season"? Please.
I could see Evans considered down the line this year
ZGiants98 : 3/13/2017 12:16 pm : link
If a few injuries hit. That's another roster spot though. I remember the Mets seemingly tried every possible solution on the 40 man last year before finally adding TJ Rivera late in the season and promoting him. I think it can effect guys like Evans some.

Seems strangely quiet this year. Today's game isn't even on the radio. For a home Thor start. Lol
For
DanMetroMan : 3/13/2017 12:18 pm : link
now Evans is better served playing than being a 25th man. 3b is still a relatively new position for him and quite honestly (and I like him) he really only has .5 a season of strong performance. Let him build upon that. They have Reyes, Flores, Walker, Cabrera all potentially available for 2b/3b duty and TJ Rivera on the 40 man. That doesn't include my BFF Ty Kelly who can play these positions as well (Walker isn't playing SS, then again neither is Evans).

Final 25 as of today
ZGiants98 : 3/13/2017 12:32 pm : link
Thor, deGrom, Matz, Harvey, Gsellman (5)

long man, Sewald, Blevins, Smoker, Robles, Salas, Reed (7)

Reyes, Granderson, Cespedes, Duda, Walker, Bruce, Cabrera, TDA (8)

Ty Kelly, Lagares, Reynolds, Wilmer Flores, R. Rivera (5)

Long man is probably between Montero and Gilmartin with Familia replacing whoever after April. There's also a chance we go with a 4 man bench and bring even another reliever in April (apparently the Mets dont want to push the starters early). If that's the case and Edgin pulls it together between now and the season they could bring 3 lefties north (Edgin out of options helps his case)

Wright would replace Reynolds if he makes it back eventually.
I want Lugo in Vegas starting
ZGiants98 : 3/13/2017 12:38 pm : link
But he did only pitch 140 innings last year. I guess I could see the Mets bringing him north (for April only while Familia is out) and then sending him to Vegas to start in May. Could curb a few innings so he could last the season??

His cap is probably in the 180-190 range. No real reason they will need to curb his innings artificially. I'd prefer not having a guy go from short innings to long in-season, the reverse in terms of health seems like a better plan. Lugo has relatively few innings in his career, he could use some more.
Yeah I agree with that...
