NFT: Student booted from class for having "OBJ hair"

DanMetroMan : 3/13/2017 3:13 pm
aylon Sewell is a good kid. Just 16 years old, he is an active leader in his local church, a good student, and manager for the football team at Neville High School in Monroe, Louisiana. Suddenly, he has found himself in a deeply unfamiliar place after deciding to live a little and dye the top of his hair blonde in an homage to Odell Beckham Jr., the standout wide receiver for the New York Giants.

Jaylon's family, in a formal complaint filed in November with the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, alleged that the 16-year-old was discriminated against because he wasn't allowed to attend class with dyed hair — "when white students with dyed hair were allowed to attend class."

Jaylon and more than 20 other black students at Neville High School have been repeatedly targeted and harassed by school administrators for their hairstyles — including the Odell Beckham style, other colored styles, braids, dreads, and even for hair deemed "too nappy" by administrators, his family said.

Additionally, his family alleged in the complaint that the school district retaliated against Jaylon by "suspending him, attempting to expel him, and barring him from participation on the NHS football team."

If the child was suspended for his hair then there's nothing to discuss. It's a matter of what the discipline should be for the school, not if.

He said that as a child in high school he was allegedly attacked by a group of white people because he was black. the kid should be suspended for looking like an ass. That hair, the shirt, the whole fucking package. He probably got his ass kicked on his way home.

On a serious note, the schools are so fucked up these days with their rules. That kid is no more of a distraction than the nonsense that some of these teachers spew on a daily basis with their political agendas.

Actually no.

When the fuck was the last time you were in a school that you think high school teachers are indoctrinating kids with "political agendas"?

Also, people calling Shaun King out as a "race baiting huckster is fucking hilarious, especially when you consider the despicable race baiting hucksters coming from our executive branch, as people who happen to have the same skin color and nationality are being shot dead after being told to back to their country.

I fucking depose how absurdly old and conservative the viewpoints of many BBI posters can be at times.

Write articles about race and injustice? Automatically a baiting huckster..
Anything related to a teacher? Something something liberal political agenda

Lastly, fuck this school for kicking this kid out with hair. But yes, it actually would be more distracting than the "liberal political agenda of some teachers" (a bullshit non-existent persecution in high school)

This post pissed me off so much I had to comment twice.

Provide any proof that any SUBSTANTIAL amount of high school teachers are "spewing" agendas on a "daily basis". Absolve cops for repeatedly getting busted for misconduct (despite it being a vast majority of cops) and and distrust DOJ f innings on racial bias within law enforcement, but shit on teachers for imagined "liberal agendas spewed on a daily basis"

Everyone sees through your bullshit, you shouldn't even try pretend to be object by any means.

Well the article claims other students have dyed their hair without being suspended. Whether that's accurate or not, and whether such dying was as "outlandish" as this is obviously unknown. Like others in this thread, I apply quite a bit of skepticism to the author. But if the article is reported accurately and his hair is substantially similar to other students who didn't face suspension, than the text of the dress code is fairly irrelevant.

And even accepting the code as applicable, no rational and objective person could consider that hairstyle a disruption to the educational process.

Sorry, I try not to get political but all I could think of is that posters like sonic youth and david from LA think that its ok to unjustifiably call people racists and other demeaning names just because they have a different opinion then they do and how it has currently led to the toxic state of affairs in our country.

Fair enough. I didn't intend to take sides. But as someone with a ton of friends who are high school teachers and educated, I took pretty serious issue with someone saying they "spew their agenda daily" without knowing a motherfucking thing about what they're talking about.

Fact of the matter is that this shouldn't be political in the first place. But considering that was one of the first comments, and also considering that everyone knows what is meant by that, WTF do you expect someone to say back?

Maybe I can put EricJ in touch with my friends who are history/science/math/music teachers and he can ask them first hand about the "agendas" they "spew daily".

A totally bullshit comment by an older person who probably hasn't even set foot in a high school classroom for 40+ years designed to be a dog whistle attack at [i]teachers[/i[ of all people.

I don't like the haircut, I'd be more concerned with his nutrition but if he's holding his own on performance , it's a look the school needs to deal with.

WONT read the article but

1. Did he break a school rule?

2. Is it a known rule and told to students parents etc.

3. Are the my infringing on his civil liberities race or religion?

If it's yes yes no. Then bye.
Hw can a school code be so ambiguous

as to include the wording "hair colors so outlandish" etc?

Who's to say what's outlandish anymore?

This hair style isn't exactly new now, nor is it particularly outlandish, imo. If entertainers are wearing it, what's so bad about this kid's hair?

I couldn't pull it off. lol Nor have I ever dyed my hair. But come on people. WTF are you doing?
This thread sucks

Matches the watch well. The bow tie invites trouble but he'll get extra female attention out of that.

Got to keep the grades up, if he's a dummy, he's got no ground to stand on, good grades could get him a decent settlement wth NAACP representation.

Welcome to the new "take care of yourself by exploiting national outrage" mentality.

Are you saying he needs to take care of both his inner body and his outer body?
;)

Jaylon, during morning announcements, was allegedly pulled from class along with more than a dozen of his classmates, each of them African-American — and says the students were told they would not be able to attend class until they either cut their hair or dyed it back to its natural color. For Jaylon and others, it was like an outer body experience.

That's a new one for me.

Your ignorance is astounding.
Awful

This post is awful in the sense that it has essentially nothing to do with football or the Giants outside of the fact that this kids hair is similar to OBJ. I visit this site to talk about the Giants and escape the political crap that I can find on pretty much any news or gossip site on the planet. Let's keep our conversations focused on things that stray from politics to keep people from getting banned from this site because they are so upset by what is being said one way or another that they post out of their normal character. What was the point of this post anyway? Did you not think this was going to turn into a political mess?

Um. Isn't OBJ a giant? Thus it's Giant related. Fuck off dude

is a topic better left discussed somewhere else. Neither side created it. It took both.

You can agree or disagree with the site owner's ban on the topic, but it's his site and it should be respected. It also derails discussion of the topic posted.

Maybe you should just take a few deep breaths. It would be great to come to this site without having to read more hysterical political whining on both sides. His comments on teachers with agendas was stupid. You responding with an equally stupid post on the election makes it worse, not better.

the kid should be suspended for looking like an ass. That hair, the shirt, the whole fucking package. He probably got his ass kicked on his way home.

On a serious note, the schools are so fucked up these days with their rules. That kid is no more of a distraction than the nonsense that some of these teachers spew on a daily basis with their political agendas.

He's just a kid. What a shitty post. Not surprising though.
