Donta Hightower? Ryan Clady? Should we make a move?

DennyInDenville : 3/14/2017 12:06 am
Hightower would be an amazing signing!!!!! Don't think we have the money but I would let jpp walk and sign Hightower and Hankins plus draft a DE. Just me tho...

Ryan Clady tho could be a great dumpster dive cheap man on a 1 year deal.

He could either be our "swing tackle" or play LT if healthy and move flowers to the right side for now.

Thoughts ?

Clady's done. Hightower isn't worth what he'll ask for.
It's possible that...
Milton : 3/14/2017 12:24 am : link
...teams don't feel like negotiating a contract with Hightower just to see him take it to the Patriots and sign with them for the same money. Isn't that what happened with the Giants and Devin McCourtney?
With what money??

the limiting and choking factor of the JPP tag. No player (save a franchise QB) is worth what JPP is costing.
3 players at 6 per year > one player at 18.
You sign JPP and your program is hostage to one injury -and injury that's more likely than not.
NE dominates our sport, why the heck don't GM's start to copy in a league that's famous for copying.
We dominated Green Bay without JPP right up to the moment that Cromartie got hurt.

You're kidding, right? Why don't teams emulate NE?

Simple - because NE's mediocre GM happens to keep his job because the other hat he wears is that of the greatest coach in NFL history. Nobody is replicating their performance because nobody else has Belichick on the sideline.
They were estimating that Hightower woukd get about $10 million

per year.
One thing about the Hightower situation...
Milton : 3/14/2017 7:40 am : link
There is potential for a repeat of the Chris Canty and DRC signings. In both those cases, the Giants hadn't targeted them originally, but instead were surprised that they were still on the market and at a price tag lower than anticipated. But like I said before, it would more likely be a repeat of the Devin McCourtney pursuit, whereby the Giants negotiate a fair contract for the guy and then he takes it to Belichick for his signature.
It is a different day in the NFL.
robbieballs2003 : 3/14/2017 7:47 am : link
EA learned never to let a player take an offer and shop it around. But that ks more when players came to visit. Visits rarely happen anymore with the 2 day legal tampering period. But at times like this visits become more likely. If Hightower is brought in he will most likely not be allowed ro shop our offer to NE. It would be a take it or leave it deal. However, I don't think we would be in the same ballpark with what we can realistically afford.
Looks like the Pats

no to Hightower, he'll prob just go back to NE

Going to do with a 270 lb LB?
For all intensive purposes I think

the Giants are done making any big FA signings.

Same thing the Patriots did. They also run a base 4-3.

he can rush the passer, stout against the run, and he's not as awful in coverage as some other MIKE's that are 2-down LB's.

He doesn't fit this scheme at all. Do some of you not watch the Giants games? You can't just pick names because you've heard of them, and think they can play on any team.
NE puts an emphasis on their OLBs
JonC : 3/14/2017 10:02 am : link
NYG puts it on their DEs.

I don't see NYG spending big $ on an OLB.

The Patriots and Giants run the same base scheme even if they run a lot of sub packages. So WTF are you talking about?

Hightower is THE prototypical 4-3 SAM. You probably couldn't define a better player for the role.

However, he has enough savvy and skill he played 4-3 MIKE in NE he is tailor made for this scheme because of his versatility.

Go parrot another twitter guy or quote someone else, you are over your head.

I thought that most people have gotten beyond blaming JPP

for the Giants not having signed a half dozen overpriced free agents by now. Jordan Raanan this morning:

Salary-cap space: $4 million (estimate)

(Note: There are several moves the Giants could make to add significant cap space, if necessary)
Consider this
5BowlsSoon : 3/14/2017 11:43 am : link
Bill Bellicheck, with all his cap space, doesn't want Hightower back unless he can get him pretty pretty cheaply.

How do you know this? From what I've read most teams are convinced Hightower is going to pull a McCourty from last year. Shop around for offers and bring match to NE for the Patriots to match.

you're so arrogant and definite pjcas. you scream that DH is perfect for the Giants, demean anyone who disagrees, and yet for the most important role for a Giant LB you say he's "not as awful in coverage as some other MIKE's"? So we should just wave him in at big $$? Goodson can be a 2 down run stuffer for a fraction of the $$, and with coaching and experience could just as easily be "not as awful in coverage as some other MIKE's"

And as JonC points out, the Pats 4-3 emphasizes the OLBs, while the Giants have under both Spags and Fewell emphasized the DEs. This makes spending big $$ on an OLB a misallocation of cap $$.

And you have a reading comprehension issue. Show me once where I said the Giants should sign Hightower?

I only responded when one poster said "what would the Giants do with a 270-lb linebacker?" and I responded politely.

I only became arrogant, if I was even that, when I was chastised and belittled for suggesting the Giants would do the same thing with him the Patriots would.

He happens to be a great fit here and he's a traditional SAM who does not embarrass himself in coverage - I think that's better than most LB's period, but I don't expect or think necessarily the Giants should or will pursue him for many of the reasons stated including the Giants emphasis on the front 4.

I don't mean to be arrogant or speak in finite language, everything I type is my opinion. Sometimes tone is hard to tell on a site like this, I just like the discussion, when someone uses questionable tone with me I don't have a problem responding similarly, if people want civil discussion I am almost never the one to take in anywhere else.

If you re-read this thread I'm sure you will agree I was not the instigator in any provocative language. or not.

13M per......

He would be a great addition to the Giants.......but not at the price he wants.....

Watch any Giant linebacker who rushes, get stood up by the RB....this guy just goes through them.....

He will eventually go back to the Pats I think....and if he does, it won't be for what he is asking....

Didn't DRC go down early in the 1st quarter? Might have been able to overcome the injury if we had a guy like JPP in there creating havoc.
