Taco Charlton look like a bust to me

TheGhostofBlueGuy : 3/14/2017 6:58 am
I don't see it with Taco Charlton. I'm watching the Michigan/Ohio State game from last year and I'm just not seeing it with this kid. I know he fits the 'Giants DE' prototype, but there has to be more than that for him to be in play at the 23rd pick.

Yes, he made a couple of plays. But one sack occurred when the slow footed center for OSU didn't get outside in time. Another sack he was unblocked. The RT for OSU is terrible and he really didn't take advantage of that. Most of the time, however, he was a non factor.

Limited pass rush. No variation on his pass rush moves. Weak at the POA. Poor recognition on play action. They ran to his side a lot, especially down the stretch.

I know we need another DE/DL but I'm really hoping this kid ain't it. There will be far better and more impactful players available at #23. Check the tape and tell me you see a 1st rounder. I don't. I see 3rd rounder, at best.

Taco Charlton (Michigan DE) vs Ohio State 2016 - ( New Window )
Cool story

Charlton made big strides in his game the second half of last year
Torrag : 3/14/2017 7:06 am : link
...and played his best ball in big games. His pass rush improved. Watching him I think he'd benefit from playing about ten pounds lighter. Probably a LDE in the pros but that's ok. There are guys I'd prefer at #23 but he deserves strong consideration.

Beg to differ. OSU was the last game of the season for Michigan. He got swallowed up too many times to even be considered at #23. If he played lighter, he might be less impactful.
hmmm...
Torrag : 3/14/2017 7:25 am : link
...he had 2.5 sacks and six solo tackles in that game. That's how you define 'swallowed up'? He's not a perfect prospect. If he was he'd be going in the Top 5. At #23 he's solidly in the mix imo and just about every draft pundit out there.
Don't agree
jeff57 : 3/14/2017 7:28 am : link
Probably won't make it to 23 anyway.
I'm not sure what game you were watching
RobCarpenter : 3/14/2017 7:39 am : link
MichIf Speight doesn't fumble inside the 5 Michigan
Won't say he's an outright bust...
M.S. : 3/14/2017 7:40 am : link

...but I think Taco is over-hyped and not nearly as good as several draft boards would suggest.

For the same reason
Beer Man : 3/14/2017 7:40 am : link
that we don't pick players based on a highlight video, we don't reject them based on the film of one game where they may have had a bad performance. Overall Taco had a good year. I'm not sure what game you were watching, but against Ohio State he had 9 tackles and 2.5 sacks (I think most DEs would take that as a good day, particularly when you consider it was against Ohio State)
Hit wrong button
RobCarpenter : 3/14/2017 7:41 am : link
Michigan's D was great that day, and Charlton was good as well.

I think there's a good chance he's there at #23 and is the pick if Howard and the Miami TE have been drafted.
If getting swallowed up
Big Rick in FL : 3/14/2017 8:06 am : link
Leads to 9 tackles, 3 TFL & 2.5 sacks I want my DEs to get swallowed up every game.

No I just don't think anyone in here, but sy' can honestly have a good opinion on who could potentially be a bust. You can love a player for a number of reasons, but being able to scout a bust is something I leave to professionals. i don't even have a clue how who we will draft in the first round. I have players I like, but I trust Rease he is pretty good in the first round of drafts.

But this is a Giant's fan-based message board. What's wrong with giving opinions ?

Eric would lose a lot of posters if we were not allowed to give opinions, even if we are not "experts".

Argue the post, but don't tell people not to give opinions - that is a lot of what this site is all about.
FWIW, Taco kind of reminds me of Michigan DE Brandon Graham
Bold Ruler : Mod : 3/14/2017 8:39 am : link
I felt he had short arms was just 'ok'. But he's been a pretty decent player for Philly for a while now. Is Taco as good as say JPP? Nope. But I think he'll do well.
Charlton is 4 inches taller
jeff57 : 3/14/2017 8:48 am : link
and 10 pounds heavier than Graham,
I think Taco
jvm52106 : 3/14/2017 8:51 am : link
is Justin Tuck like. Tuck had flaws coming out and we got him later in the draft than where Taco will go. I don't know about 23 but I would move down in Rd 1 or up in Rd 2 to get him.
I read in an interview
NikkiMac : 3/14/2017 9:07 am : link
With Ramsyk he said when asked who was the toughest guy he lined up against and he said Charlton for what it's worth !
Charlton could be a

dominate player in the NFL.
I agree
WillVAB : 3/14/2017 9:10 am : link
Bust may be a little strong, but best case he's a project with upside. I don't want the Giants taking a project at 23.

If you're going to be snotty about someone posting his thoughts about a guy who is realistically a potential draft target of ours, I have to ask: why are you even here? What do YOU think is thread worthy?

Tuck fell because of injury history, not because of flaws.

JPP was considered a project with upside coming out and was selected 15th, I would say that turned out to be a pretty good pick.

Taco doesn't have the athleticism or measurables JPP had coming out. I also don't like what I've seen from Taco in games, especially the Wisconsin game. At 23, the Giants should be able to get a safer guy with similar upside.
I don't want hims either
PatersonPlank : 3/14/2017 10:54 am : link
In my opnion he has bust written all over him. His size really concerns me the most. The NFL is full of athletic freaks unlike college. When these freaks are much taller and heavier than you its a big problem for a lineman/LB.

Oops, i was referring to another player with this statement. Please ignore. He's got good size, I still don't want him though.
I'm with you.

4.9 40 - and this guy ain't no JPP. Kony Ealy ran the same time and we know what happened there.

Beyond that it's about the football. I'm not calling him a bust but I saw plenty of UM football as I'm sure most of us did and he just screamed "2nd rounder" to me.

You take a DE who runs a 4.9, he better be a sack master and Taco never showed that.
Taco
RAIN : 3/14/2017 12:46 pm : link
I will echo this; He was different player in the beginning of the year and really came on against good competition towards the end when he started using his hands in his pass rush.

He reminds me of Leonard Floyd and JPP. His get off on tape is better than JPP when he's on. I'm ignoring the 4.9, on tape he looks much quicker when he's right.

If its a questionable character and work ethic thing I would avoid. The talent is there. The consistency is not, but if his medical and character check out, I think he's well worth the pick at 23.
Oh come on ...
Beer Man : 3/14/2017 12:56 pm : link
Imagine a guy named Taco doing the Salsa dance after every sack (priceless) :>

what u described to me sounds like a 2nd round pick. Hell, it sounds like Justin Tuck who slipped all the way to 3rd. We'll see but I can't remember the last 4.90+ 43DE to go in the 1st round.

Kony Ealy even came back with a 4.69 at his Pro Day but it didn't save him. (He went 60th overall). We'll see, and I agree with your positive observations of Taco, but not with your conclusion
I would rather draft Villanova DE Kpassagnon in the 2nd round
Jay on the Island : 3/14/2017 5:43 pm : link
and use their first round pick on another position. I am a sucker for potential and Kpassagnon is oozing with potential. He is raw like Umenyiora was coming out but I think he has a huge upside.
