Draft Prospect - Malik McDowell

JOMO25 : 3/14/2017 7:34 am
5 star prospect coming out of HS

To my eye and a lot of draft write-ups, he lacks a sense of urgency/professionalism in his approach. He is clearly not a consideration for the Rd 1 pick. But there is talent and rare physical gifts. Probably more of a DT than DE if he appealed to NYG. Also a 3-4 DE for other teams.

Do you see him as a viable Rd 2/3 prospect and a guy where the light bulb comes on a la Cory Redding? Or is he just one of those low motor guys you hope lands on a competitor?

I understand the negatives with him but I would be shocked

If he was there for our second round pick.
I don't think he makes it to the second round.

I haven't watched him play in a while, but he looks like a top ten talent. I didn't see the lack of effort you're referring to, but maybe I didn't see him as much as others. It would be nice to get an inside pass rush at defensive tackle, especially if we do lose JPP.
Unless he interviewed horribly...

...or has skeletons we don't know about, he won't make it anywhere near the 55th pick in the draft. He may very well be a consideration for the 23rd pick. He would fit in nicely as a 3-technique.
Boylhart loves him

He had concerns, but they weren't related to effort...

Malik plays like a ghost. By that I mean he seems to be caught between the plane of existence of a Defensive Nose Tackle in a 3/4 defense and a pass rushing Defensive End in a 3/4 or 4/3 defense. This has caused him to have very poor techniques to free his self up when switching back and forth between positions and to look very sloppy. Not using the correct techniques for each position makes him look like he is not consistent and disappears during games and then all of a sudden appears when he does use the correct techniques. The key for me is there is never a lack of effort when he struggles to appear or when he disappears. Another concern is Medicals and if Malik can’t work out because he ended the season early with a bad ankle.

Supposedly didn't interview well. Looks best as a 3-4 end. Not a fan at 23.

...McDowell didn't interview well at the combine. Prior to the combine, teams had concerns about McDowell's work ethic and motor. When presented with questions on those topics, he didn't give good answers, and those issues will continue to be a weight on where he ends up on team's boards. Teams feel that McDowell is a first-round talent but could slide to Day 2 because of the concerns about his football character.

Robert Nkemdiche. A major talent. If he is available to the Giants in the 2nd and they don't take him, the whole War Room, Mara included, should be drug screened .
