Raana Periscope Recap

ryanmkeane : 3/14/2017 11:07 am
-On Jerry/Fluker: Ridiculous to think that Fluker is "definitely a tackle" for Giants considering what he got paid on the open market. 1 year and 2-3M does not seem like starting tackle money, and he left Giants after signing with the impression that he will be a guard. That being said, he can absolutely play tackle for them if they think that's the best fit. Jerry made more money on the open market than Fluker, that should be all you need to know about what teams feel about Fluker and his performance
-Reddick: Doesn't think he will be the pick and views him more in the late first and early second round, despite him being the hot player lately after the combine
-Bolles: Favorite lineman in the draft and he's the prediction for the pick at this point if available. Spoke to a lot of people he trusts that think he's best OL in draft and will be first OL taken
-Howard would be #1 choice but he won't be available
-Not a huge fan of Njoku being the pick, risky, more “upside” than anything, 1 way player, wouldn’t be high on giants list because of the risk and he's only played a few D1 college games
-Same with Ramcyzk, risky, less than 10 starts in d1 college football, from people he trusts they say there is concern about this guy from injury standpoint and not necessarily "off the field" issues, but some other concerns about football
-Dalvin cook- as a player hes a stud, definitely concern about him off field from who he talks to "trust me", have to look beyond the surface, says he has people he trusts that there is legit concern on him
-Thinks McCaffrey is definitely in the mix at 23 and NYF would view him not just as a RB but an overall offensive weapon. Adding a weapon like him to the mix is crucial
-Draft philosiphy: Can't say to yourself "we need to take a guard or a tackle" with the first few picks, because then you end up reaching for guys that aren't good. NYG will always have tiers of players and pick the best player based on value and need, regardless of holes on roster
-Keenan Robinson: Don't slam the door but not likely at this point
-Pugh: Thinks he will be a 10M per year player based on what guys are getting. Turned into a very good LG
-Hankins-doesn’t really have any info because they are keeping it very close to the vest but puts lower than 50% for him to come back, but lately the chances have gone up
.Thinks its possible for both hank and robinson to sign if giants think financials are right but wont press the issue
-Jt thomas: has to pass physical, preference would be for him to pass and then release him, wouldn’t be on the hook for 3M
-top 10 most likely picks article by raanan coming out at end of march
-Likes the Ellison signing a lot, solid move to improve run game and get physical at the point of attack
-Blount decent RB option or Deangelo Williams, because lacy and murray are too high
-OL – throw everyone into the pot and see what happens. Other than Richburg being the 100% center and Pugh "most likely, if not 100% the LG" they are going to throw everyone in the pot and see what the best solution is. Chances they add another to the mix in first couple rounds is good, but don't necessarily think that because fans think there is a hole at RT or RG, that they wull automatically draft one high. Teams become worse over time with this strategy

That's all!
Bolles would be an excellent pick

Graded Giants offseason

B/B- so far as well.

Also said he's not as high on Marshall as some.
Bolles
Marty866b : 3/14/2017 11:25 am : link
Outside of Ross,Reese has picked younger players coming out. More upside and development. Bolles will be a 25 year old rookie. I'd be surprised if he went with him.
Pat

Traina's mock has Barnett and Moton in rounds 1 and 2. That'd be great.
Thanks

ryan! Good stuff. Raanan speaks a lot of sense.

I agree. I don't care that he is 25. If we get 1 and 1/2 contracts (8 years) of solid tackle play from him that is good in this league.

and before you ask what I mean about 1 and 1/2 contracts.. He plays out his rookie contract (5 years) Giants re-sign him for another 5 years (but only first 3 years are guaranteed)

25 year old rookie lineman does not bother me. Rarely are these guys kept past the 1st contract and if he is, he'd still be 30 which is not old for an offensive lineman.
If McCaffery is what everyone thinks he is
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/14/2017 11:36 am : link
I could see that being the pick. Younger, healthier version of Vereen and potentially the better runner.
Yeah. Aaron Ross' age bothered me,
Big Blue '56 : 3/14/2017 11:38 am : link
but that was 2007..Times have drastically changed and as stated above, Many players simply leave after their first 5 years. That's good enough for me, if he's the real deal..
Bolles
ryanmkeane : 3/14/2017 11:40 am : link
looks to be in the Lane Johnson mold. Very athletic with a mean streak. I don't love him being 25 already, but I'm warming up to that.
Since he'll be 25 at the end of May,
Big Blue '56 : 3/14/2017 11:55 am : link
He will have played through 29th year after 5 years are up..So he should still be in his prime when he starts his 6th year at age 30(wherever he plays)

I would have preferred Pryor, primarily based on size and age.
Raanan doesn't think the NYG are high on Njoku

Sy'56 thinks he's at top target.
Basically the same age

As Leonard Floyd was last year and nobody had a problem with that. After watching a bunch of Bolles I'd love to draft him. If he was 21 or 22 I think he'd be a top 10 pick.

Forgot who mentioned it up above, but they compared him to Lane Johnson. My friend is an Eagles fan and I text him on Saturday to tell him Bolles reminds me of Lane.
I am all for drafting an OL in the first
robbieballs2003 : 3/14/2017 12:20 pm : link
But let me ask you guys this: Do you guy really believe the Giants are going to draft an OL first and have him ride the bench all year? I don't. So, would that rookie start? If so, where? It is looking very likely that our OL will be:

Flowers/Pugh/Richburg and then some combination of Jerry/Fluker/Hart at RG and RT. It is just looking less likely that they are going to go OL in the first.

I wasn't thinking McCaffery was a legit possibility early this offseason but I think he makes a lot of sense. You can put him and Perkins on the field at the same time.

The TEs makes sense. Any pass rusher makes sense including Reddick although I have my concerns. LB is starting to make sense.

But my two surprises would be a DT because they take time to develop and cornerback becauae of the value. Both positions take time so these options would be more for the future. At CB we can let DRC's contract finish out saving money against the cap in a year or two. It would also give us a ton of depth and insurance in case Apple regresses. At DT, if nothing else happens, we can rotate Bromley and our draft pick grooming the draft pick to take over next year saving money along the DL.
Ranaan was on the radio the other day

He came off as kind of annoyed with the Giants off season so far. Saying Marshall wasn't a good signing and thought it was a risk because of his age and attitude history. He was like warm in Ellison, said he doesn't offer anything to the passing game. As for Fluker he said he wasn't thrilled with the signing, thought he might be a back up. Also said JPP and NYG are far off on a deal and he thinks Hankins has priced himself out of NYG.

Kinda of depressing interview and while I tend to be an optimistic person, I feel the offseason has been decent except for the JPP contract issue.

I am in the minority but I think Fluker is going to be a very good RT for us. Ellison will be a very good FB/TE, and Marshall is just what the Dr. Ordered in the passing game. John Jerry coming back is fine, teaming him with Fluker will be an improvement in the running game.

Bring Darkwa back is ok, pretty cheap addition. Not sure what to think of Wynn returning and I like Tye but as the 3rd TE.

I agree re: OL and DL, which is why my mock now was for Reddick in 1 and Wormley in 2. I think they're giving Flowers one last shot and OT may be the #1 pick next year or the biggest FA signing that isn't a re-sign or an extension.

It seems that, despite Eli Apple being a special player, they might have missed out last year with the depth at tackle. Tunsil or Decker may have been a more useful pick.

You don't always have to draft a guy to start right away. Part of the draft is realizing potential. When we took Apple - did we think he was going to start for us basically all 16 games and be really solid? No, most of us said, hey this is a great pick, he's so young with unlimited upside, and he can be really effective rookie season and get some good experience. But, he ended up having a crucial role.

If they took a tackle and he ended up being a depth guy rookie year because he needed the reps, and then turned into a great starter down the road...isn't that the point of the draft?

my issue with the Flowers comments on a daily basis. People forget he was 20 when drafted, and was drafted to be a franchise type tackle, not a world beater from day 1. They knew he needed time to grow into a player. Yes, the jury is still out, but guys that are young need to develop. You don't need to start and be a pro bowler in year 1 of your NFL career to be considered a really good draft pick. Plenty of guys need time. Flowers may not be the best example because he hasn't exactly shown improvement yet, but you get my drift.

Totally different. You can work in an extra DB. Who was our third CB before we drafted Apple? Also, DRC was missing a lot of plays. Apple was 100% going to play. You cannot say the same with an OL.

Listen to any GM. You don't need draft picks to be all-pros but in today's game you need them to contribute. How would a first round OL contribute?

And, read what I wote. I said I would draft an OL in the first but I am not so sure the Giants would do so now unless they just have that much higher of a grade on an OL than other positions. With all things being equal I think pass rusher, TE, RB, DT, corner, and even LB could have a case over OL right now. At least in the Giants eyes.

I agree regarding Flowers - a little disappointed with his performance overall but not calling him a bust. I would say that I was very disappointed that the NYG didn't bring in any competition at LT last year, especially given the rumors that they were telling FA OT last year they were coming to compete for a spot at RT because Flowers had LT locked down.

Not a problem for a 20 yr old to be drafted and given some time to develop. A problem when you have seek to eliminate competition for his position in yr 2, specifically when he didn't light the world on fire yr 1.
