NFL Power Rankings: Free agency pushing Giants toward No. 1

....it's time to reorder the NFL power structure, now that we've gone through the first wave of large-scale team reconstruction in 2017

Hard to imagine that we're #1 in NFC at this stage
adamg : 3/14/2017 2:27 pm : link
Or that someone called us their FA winner.

But, they have to say something I guess.
nothing like signing a backup TE
giants#1 : 3/14/2017 2:28 pm : link
and a (to-date) first round bust to push you over the edge!

This is a good team
Go Terps : 3/14/2017 2:36 pm : link
Offensively I hope they remain on the conservative side like they did in 2016...I think that was a major factor in winning as many close games as they did. I saw game management as a big strength for McAdoo...they punted when they were supposed to punt, went for it went they were supposed to go for it, etc.

Keep giving our defense a long field to defend. With Damon Harrison and our secondary that will result in lots of 3rd and 7+ situations.
I'd also like to see what we do at kicker
Go Terps : 3/14/2017 2:38 pm : link
I liked the idea of bringing in Zeurlein, but he appears to have re-signed with the Rams.

Good teams have good kickers. This should be a high priority.
This is absolutely a good team overall.

Sorry that the OL still causes doom and gloom..With continued good health, we're in the mix, imv

I didn't see anything special out of game management from Ben. He made some major clock gaffes and his coaching in the playoff game was horrible.

The jury is still out on him. Last year was all the defense.
Last year was not all the defense
Go Terps : 3/14/2017 2:51 pm : link
McAdoo knew what he had/didn't have on offense, and he managed the game to his strengths masterfully.

Whatever you think of Coughlin, McAdoo was a big improvement in this area. As an offensive coach he could have been stubborn, but he identified what his team did well and played to that.

Exactly, and the offensive additions, especially Ellison and Marshall fill key gaps in the offense. Marshall gives them the best WR corps in the NFCE to go with the best QB. Ellison improves blocking and gives them a reliable 4th/5th passing option out of their standard 3 WR set. They aren't "sexy" moves but I think they will be important. I wish they'd have kept Will Johnson for the same reason but maybe he'll be back.

Marshall, Ellison should also improve run blocking.
Can we go one thread

without bitching about the OL?
Is it really a given that 2017 Manning
Overseer : 3/14/2017 3:40 pm : link
will be the "best QB" in the NFCE? He wasn't in 2016.

The list of QBs who excel at his age is regrettably short. Remember when Rich Gannon and Kurt Warner were those "old guys" still chugging along and winning big games? Well, they were 36/37, not 40.

The hope is that Manning follows big bro who had a few more monster years in Denver before falling off a cliff, but it should not be assumed.

A Kelly/Kaaya/Watson in 3-5 if they see an eventual starter would be advisable.

--

The Giants will continue to address Oline. They know the Achilles heel which is not covered by DJ Fluker. Draft + a possible trade to bolster.
O-line is the only thing standing beteween this team and a SB
Vanzetti : 3/14/2017 4:05 pm : link
Defense won't be quite as good as second half last year but they will be good enough if this oline can do anything.

Eli is 36 not 40. How many times are some of you going to bury the guy. He won Eleven games last year.
Elis playoff game performance
UConn4523 : 3/14/2017 4:35 pm : link
is extremely encouraging. Cousins put up a better season but he shit the bed when he needed to beat us, so there's that. Prescott also shit the bed against us and almost every time the run was shut down, and there will now be a season of film on him.
whatever

talk to me about rankings on Labor Day when we know who's on the roster, who's injured, etc

good post. I agree with this wholeheartedly. McAdoo showed that he was more concerned about winning than looking smart. He plays to the teams strengths. The Offensive, WCO genius played Steve Owen, Giants football and won 11 games. I was impressed.

This is one way of looking at it. Another way is looking at the massive drop off in offensive performance from Coughlin to McAdoo. The only thing that saved McAdoo last year was Spags and 100s of million of dollars infused into the defense a long with the ascendance of Landon Collins.

Now I am not saying thats what happened, but its an easy argument to make. How the hell did the offense get so bad in 2016 when it was at least middle of the pack in 2015?
'nothing like signing a backup TE'...
Torrag : 3/14/2017 4:44 pm : link
...he's clearly th starter for us. As Bennett was when coming out of the shadow of Json Whitten. Oh and you casually dismissed signing Marshall in your 'analysis'.

Torrag : 3/14/2017 4:47 pm : link
His time management and critical decision making was quite good as evinced by our results in close games.

He had the team ready to play in Green Bay and if we caught the ball we may have blitzkrieged them and won easily.
our 1st down play calling was atrocious, i'm sorry
gtt350 : 3/14/2017 5:07 pm : link
a little imagination please. i'm not talking about a double reverse pass, how about a 7 yard comeback route. nothing like 2nd and 9 or 10 all season
Good team...

Should be in the Super Bowl conversation, but the OL, i.e. Flowers @ LT, still scares the hell out of me.
When you get too uptight about chasing the Super Bowl
SB 42 and 46 and ? : 3/14/2017 6:38 pm : link
with Flowers at LT, then Remember David Diehl!

A 5th round draft pick, with skills at about that level, and I think one selection to the Pro Bowl as a double substitute, he played bigger than most would think.

Diehl was our unlikely left tackle for both post-season runs. He played mostly LT from 2007-20010. Then before the 2011 season he was asked to move back to guard because, among other things, it's now time for Beatty to prove he can be a full-time left tackle in the NFL.

Of course, we know how that worked out. Somewhere in the 2011 season Beatty was injured or sucked or some combination of the two and Diehl was back at left tackle.

I don't know how well Dave played individually against that ferocious Niner defense in the NFC title game, but we won and Eli lived through it, so Dave did his job.

And that's how I wish the Giants would handle LT this year. Go with Flowers and give him every chance, but have a veteran, a durable experienced veteran without maybe four trips to the Pro Bowl but who is fearless and fights hard every play. Because you can win the Super Bowl twice with a 5th round draft choice at left tackle.

No. It's a legitimate concern based on what we saw last year.
I don't think the NYG are appreciably better than last year
The_Boss : 3/14/2017 7:22 pm : link
This ranking is a bit overtly generous, in my opinion. I think Dallas, Atlanta, GB, and perhaps even Seattle, are better in the NFC. We're likely another year away.
They are better
djm : 3/14/2017 8:04 pm : link
If you buy in to the theory that the Giants were collectively a young team last year. New HC. Lots of new faces on D. Flowers and richburg hopefully ascending. Perkins. Not to mention Marshall and Ellison additions which were solely needed. We upgraded two dreadful positions from 2016. That's big.

Giants as a team should have staying power at the very least. Meanwhile Dallas did nothing on paper to improve. They lost guys all over the place. But it's Dallas so they will get benefit of the doubt. Who'd we lose? No one really. Hopefully Hank stays or at worst we find an adequate replacement.

I think he did a decent job as a first year head coach, but I wouldn't call it masterful. It seemed like teams always knew what we were doing offensively.

A solid draft where we bring in a couple of good o-lineman and this article carries some weight
