You can always do some work to get more money into play.
This. And if they sign Hanks to a multi-year deal, the money this year doesn't matter much at all.
I disagree with both these comments. There is a price to creating cap space. It's never a simple non-issue "the giants can sign anyone they want by creating space", it means changing the structure of a contract in a way you as the team did not originally want it written. And there was a reason it was written that way in the first place or cutting a player you as the team would rather not cut.
And the second comment about year 1 not mattering much at all? Where does that come from? Completely depends on the contract. Guys like Harris and Vereen signed for half or less of what Hankins is asking for and their respective cap hits this year ~5M and ~4M. So double that or at least multiple it times 1.5 to get in the Hankins vicinity.
Remember we will have a monster OBJ extension coming soon Â
The projected $4.4M of cap room (less the contracts for Darkwa/Jerry) already includes the Rookie Pool allocation? He has about $5.5M in the list of cap spend by player for Draft Pool, in which case we're in a bit better shape (than I thought at least).
If the draft pool is accounted for, we don't need to free up nearly as much space - basically just for the FA's we sign plus a little wiggle room for in season moves, etc. Jerry and Darkwa probably take at least $3M or so of the remaining $4.4, which I'd guess leaves us around $1.5 - but there's easy $ to be had from cutting Thomas and even Harris, neither of whom would be missed much.
I also really think we should sign LB Zach Brown
Plus you like to keep an excess(Giants had 10M last year), for signings due to injuries, free agent availability, etc.,....

We may have to live with Hankins walking and make do with the second hand rack, like we did at LB last year
2. Played solid in 2016; Benefited from Snacks/OV/JPP. Bromley should be able to replace him
3. If you sign Hank long term how does that impact signing Pugh, OBJ, etc

Bromley hasn't done anything to suggest that we don't have to question this.
