So how does the pitching line up when
Chris684 : 3/16/2017 9:21 am : link
they head north?

Thor, JdG, Matz, locked in.

Harvey then Gsellman?

Wheeler extended spring? Can someone describe exactly what this means as far as it relates to the roster and when we might see him make his first start?

Lugo opens at AAA?
As I said the the other night
Rob in Rockaway : 3/16/2017 9:23 am : link
I'm really not counting on Wheeler for anything, but a good showing from him would still feel good. I kind of feel like the awesome showing from degrom has been countered by the mediocre harvey outings.

Anyone know how Lugo looked in his last WBC outing?

We won't see Wheeler until they have a need in the rotation and/or opt for a 6 man rotation. Lugo as of right now is ticketed for the AAA rotation with Sewald or Rowen the current favorites for last spot in the pen. The actual order in which they start is to be determined. For example Gsellman last pitched following Thor, does that mean he pitches the second game? I doubt it.

Lugo made one start and due to the ballpark pitched "backwards". Throwing mostly breaking stuff. Threw a ton of sinkers 88-90. Hard to take much from it as the pitchers were saying they had to deviate from their norm so hard to take a ton away from the performance.
Thanks Dan

What was Harvey's issue anyway ??

Any reports on Jay Bruce at 1B ??

Has Tebow left the building yet ??

Harvey had TOS surgery. A rib was removed

Bruce played 1b on Tuesday and did not commit any errors

I guess that sums it up Dan. I get most of my Mets news here on BBI.

I was just browsing MMO and Warthen thinks Harvey can "pitch" at 92 - 93 and may gain a few ticks as he works his way up to it.

Would've like to have seen more of Bru-u-u-uce at 1B. Did they say if he had to make any kind of instinctive plays around the bag ?? Just Curious.

Shecky saw Bruce at 1b so he'd likely be able to answer that. Duda is a better player than Bruce and having a huge spring so far so Bruce at 1b is likely only in an emergency situation.

are going to take advantage of David Wright. They know his throwing was already diminished before this. THey have to think long and hard about making him a full-time bench player. If his back can't handle that then maybe he shouldn't be on the active roster. \
Seems like all the lefties are getting it together lately
ZGiants98 : 3/16/2017 4:58 pm : link
Smoker supposedly looked great today striking out Harper on three pitches. Gorzelanny and Edgin have even looked good over their last 3-4 outings now even though I'm not a huge fan of either.

Yeah and I think Im ok with that. If he replaces Reynolds on the bench so be it. Reyes should start at 3B and Flores should still be the IF Super sub. As a fan of Wright and who he is I can live with him being a pinch hitter, maybe get a start or two against lefties only once in a while even if it restricts our flexibility a little.
Did I miss it or is Kelly Johnson still available?

yeah I'm not saying he can't possibly get a few starts but I find it extremely hard to believe he's a better player than Jose Reyes (or Wilmer) given his current health. My mantra for this season will be all about the best roster (don't care about youth vs. veterans) and merit. Wheeler should open in extended either way because 125 innings means no way to manage that and have him go all season AND potentially playoffs. Monitor the innings now so it's not an issue later. It's not as if we know for sure Wheeler is better than Lugo. He very well might be but 6-7 starts from Lugo isn't going to bury the Mets.

Let him skip April in NYC where the weather can be iffy, build up that arm and have him locked, loaded and able to give a consistent 5-6+ innings come mid-May (or however the math works out).

Smoker should be a lock at this point. What does he have a sub 1 ERA this spring?? I actually think there is a chance they will carry 3 lefties while Familia suspended which might still yet make room for Edgin.

Everything Ive heard is that he's a family man and desperately would like to stay in Atlanta but that he also wants a major league deal. A million bucks and he's likely all yours.
Actually I just read Edgin hit 93 mph today.
ZGiants98 : 3/16/2017 11:36 pm : link
If true he's making the team. Pen will be Reed, Salas, Smoker, Blevins, Robles, and Edgin. That's 6. Do they want a long man like Montero for the last spot? Could the brain trust get together and bring Lugo north last minute? Do they activate a spot for either Rowan or Sewald? Do they possibly carry 8 in April since they dont want to overwork the starters and there isnt a lot of off days? Time will tell.
We may need Lugo in the rotation to start the season.

I can't say enough good things about Long
ZGiants98 : 3/17/2017 2:26 pm : link
If you consider that batting coaches have very little effect on hitters in general at all how good has this guy been? We have this discussion every year but every year there are more examples added to his ledger. Add Walker and Cabrera as two more examples. Both guys are coming off career years and both credit Long. Cespedes's patience at the plate is something he never had before coming here. He completely credits Long. Of course, we know about Murphy who's now a MVP candidate. Granderson was lost before reuniting with the guy and turning in the MVP Mets season of 2015. He's helped Duda hit lefties, Walker hit lefties.... Some of the video I watched this season with Conforto has me gushing.

All of this said, are we expecting a "Long effect" when it comes to Bruce? Almost every veteran has close to a career year here when teaming with the guy. Should we expect a slight bump? Will he be a little more patient? Will he buy in?

And to be clear...
ZGiants98 : 3/17/2017 2:31 pm : link
To put this in perspective the Mets went years and years and years with hitting instructors that seemed to have very little effect on anything. Im not saying hitting instructors dont help guys get out of slumps, tweak things, ect. but generally hitting instructors don't change hitters. It's unheard of actually. This isn't to say he's going to help every young player that comes through the system and change a guy like Lagares into an all-star but the results so far have been pretty staggering.

Robinson Cano is another player who credits Long. I mean you are talking about 3 players he has changed into MVP candidates and countless other examples of him at least helping guys. That's crazy.

ever improve against righties if he never gets the opportunity. He had a double, a grand slam, and a walk all off righties today. There was a stretch when Wright first went down last year where Flores heated up and was hitting righties and lefties for a few weeks and then he lost playing time and struggled again.

There's nothing we can do. I get that. I'd love to just see him left alone for a few months and see what he could do but it's not happening on this team unless many injuries hit.

Im also fine with being a guy that crushes lefties. There's usefulness in that alone.
Also Collins comments dont make much sense

considering Reyes is the starter unless he is referring to when Wright comes back? If Reyes is the starter you would think Flores would have to be the first guy to give the infielders rest over somebody like Reynolds?
