Round 1 OL pick

BigBlueDownTheShore : 3/16/2017 11:54 am
Please convince me why (besides it being a need) we should draft any offensive linemen in the first round of this draft.

I am warming up to it, but this is deep draft in a ton of positions besides Oline, and Qb. The prospects available in the first feel like reaches, and I have a feeling someone unexpected is going to drop to use at #23.
Howard, Njoku, Fournette, Cook, McCaffrey

Davis, Williams, Ross, Reddick, Charlton, Thomas, and Foster are all gone?

No I am just saying, tons of people on here are demanding we take an Olineman in the first round even if any of those players could be had at #23.

No reach. They are projected to go right around the Giants pick.
rasbutant : 3/16/2017 12:08 pm : link
Not sure what you are expecting? If they were rated higher the Giants wouldn't have a chance to select them.

Plus the fact that 3 of the lineman are FA's next year.
BPA.

If they have several comparable grades, go with need as the tie-breaker. If it's an OL, more power to them.
I am in the camp
mavric : 3/16/2017 12:18 pm : link
that it's just as likely that a later round draft pick could end up being every bit as good and possibly better than the offensive linemen slated as first round picks.

I hope they draft the best player left on the board period! Even if it's a position where we are already strong (CB, WR, DT/DE, etc.). Even if the linemen slated as first rounders gets drafted - they are two or three years away from making an impact
The way the Giants draft board is set up
Rjanyg : 3/16/2017 12:22 pm : link
a case can be made to defend any pick, even if we think it is a reach. The idea of rows can leverage perceived need with value. So, yes while the draft seems to be weak for OL and QB it will raise the value for some teams. There could be an OT or OG worth the 23rd pick. I think Robinson or Lamp could be considered here, not that I would go that route. For me, it depends on whether or not Howard, Njoku or Reddick are still on the board.
depends on who's left.
Victor in CT : 3/16/2017 12:25 pm : link
silly to make a blanket "they must do this" statement
They will see who is available
AnnapolisMike : 3/16/2017 12:27 pm : link
If the players are similar in rating ...they will pick the guy who fills the need.

No. No soup for you.
BPA is a lie
averagejoe : 3/16/2017 12:40 pm : link
Giants reached for Flowers and Pugh because they needed OL. It didn't work out. Pugh was drafted as an OT and is now a mediocre LG. Flowers has been a train wreck. Complete bust so far for a top ten pick.

I think Giants should draft best skill player available and draft OL in the later rounds and hope they get lucky.
Its simple
the coffee man : 3/16/2017 12:41 pm : link
they are close to a SB and ELI is 36. You draft for need just like they do every year. O-line is the glaring weakness. Fix it and they can win a SB.

TE, or OL are the picks.

Pugh was a tackle and fits better at LG. To say he is a mediocre LG loses you points.

I am looking for a weapon,
Doomster : 3/16/2017 1:02 pm : link
preferably an offensive one, at TE or RB or WR, but if a stud linebacker or DB(FS/CB)is available, I wouldn't be upset....
Just don't see OL at 23
WillVAB : 3/16/2017 1:05 pm : link
Maybe if Ramcyk is there they jump on him, but I have a feeling he won't be there.

My guess is a pass rusher at 23 followed by an OT at 55 -- maybe a trade up in the 2nd if there's a run on OL.

That's how I feel.

I think you think people are agreeing with you and they're not (or maybe I'm misinterpreting). It's possible that an OL could be the BPA when we're on the clock.

I'm reading Adam's post as answering your plea to be convinced. The way I'm understanding his post is he's saying is if all those guys he mentions are gone that's why you take the OL at 23

Wow an offensive weapon to be made pointless by a bottom feeder o-line. Guess you hated Parcels.

Yeah. That's what I was trying to say at least. Maybe I phrased it weird.
The Grade may match up
RAIN : 3/16/2017 1:52 pm : link
with the need.

I don't think they will take a guy in a lower tier talent-wise just for need, but this year it need and value may line up with a guy like Bolles. I"m not terribly excited about Ramcyzk or Bolles.. if Taco Charleton, McCaffrey, Lampe, or Howard aren't there for me.. I wouldn't worry about "reach".

Lamp is the best
area junc : 3/16/2017 1:54 pm : link
Offensive Lineman in this class. Yes, he probably projects best to RG but he is basically another Zack Martin.

I don't know how he lasts until our pick but if he does we should run to the podium. Unit-changing player.
There are no holes with Lamp.
area junc : 3/16/2017 1:55 pm : link
Cam's got the quirky bust factor. Bolles is old. Ramczyk's got the hip.

Lamp is the squeaky clean prospect who's strong as a bull, athletic and plays with great technique.
Can't tell you how much I loathe

Two points
LakeGeorgeGiant : 3/16/2017 2:18 pm : link
First, OL are going to be drafted higher than they deserve. Any OL worth #23 will be gone before the Giants pick imo.

Look what happened with the FA OL.

Also, Lamp looks like a fantastic prospect, but to my untrained eye he looks like a guard.

He is projected to Guard, but I think he plays LT for WKU.

Decent crop of OL will be available in the 20-50 range.
ryanmkeane : 3/16/2017 4:34 pm : link
Depending on how the board falls, I could see waiting until #55 to go OL. Even our 3rd rounder.
Looking at the current team, it's obvious OL is the weak link
PatersonPlank : 3/16/2017 5:20 pm : link
Just like DL was last year. We need a top player there to solidify the line and make a SB run. In this year's draft only the top 4 OL players are likely able to make an impact and star this year. If we wait until our 2nd round pick they eill all ve gone. I don't see any other position Ayer, OK Howard aside who will be gone, that could have as much impact.
Ugh spell check. Sorry

I think Dion Dawkins could be a good starting tackle for us and should be around in the 2nd round.

tomjgiant : 3/16/2017 8:37 pm : link
looks like the right spot to grab one of the OL.If they were picking at 15 or lower it might be a reach, but the top players at the other positions will be gone by 23 and they could have a choice of the top OL in the draft.
considering who may be off the board if goes like
micky : 3/16/2017 9:47 pm : link
assumed, and cb position so deep this draft and what may be graded out at #23

I'd bet a CB is pick at 23
Round 1 OL pick...

...bad idea unless...Ramczyk checks off all the medical boxes. Which he can't do before the draft due to his recovery timeline. So yeah, bad idea.

completely agree.....im no too crazy about the miami TE though as most people seem to be, maybe we trade the pick and take 2 more mid rounders, since it seems to be where a lot of linemen will fall.
Any of the top 4 would be worth taking at 23
jeff57 : 3/17/2017 9:54 am : link
I personally like Lamp because he could start up and down the line, except perhaps at LT. Ramcyzk and Bolles are better than Flowers at LT. And Robinson, although my least favorite could start right away at RT, RG or even LT.
Any lineman they pick - in the first round or otherwise...
Big Blue Blogger : 3/17/2017 10:29 am : link
... is unlikely to start until at least 2018, aside from possibly filling in when injuries hit.

The starting line will almost certainly include five of the following players:
Weston Richburg (C)
Justin Pugh (LG; conceivably LT or RT, but don't bet on it)
Ereck Flowers (LT or possibly RT or G)
D.J. Fluker (RG, RT or swingman)
John Jerry (G or swingman)
Bobby Hart (RG, RT or swingman)

Brett Jones or a rookie might have an outside chance of cracking the lineup, but it's a long shot. So, somewhat paradoxically, the Giants have a glaring need for offensive line help and very little chance of immediate relief through the draft.
