So, I have never neen a very big Manziel fan. I always thought he didnt have the stuff to be a leader and I thought he came off as a punk. Never had I any desire to have him join the Giants. However, given that he has a career to attempt to revive, our need for a competent back up along with our lack of a desire to draft one this year and eith Eli in the last 3-5 years of his career, the Giants could have that back up and popotentially Eli's replacement (especially if he only plays 3 more years) on the roster when he leaves.
Sitting on a train and looking at the photo with him and Beckham I was reminded of Kerry Collins and his issues with booze and how the Giants gave him another chance which he turned into a pretty good career. One could make the argument that Kerry's problems exceeded what Manziel has dealt with. Kerry Collins had quite a bit more convincing to do as he had kinda been labeled a racist(yes, I know that many thought that his comments were taken out of context) by a lot of players. In addition to convincing Giants brass that he had put his drinking days behind him, he had a lot of teammates that he had to win over as well.
Say what you want about Manziel, the guy has guts and it shows in how he plays. He has the tools to be a game changer similar to Russell Wilson. He has an arm in addition to being highly mobile, but prefers to look downfield before having to run. He is the type of back up who would be a real problem if Eli went down. You game plan for a pocket passer who will go down before taking a big hit all week and then you have to deal with one who is a threat to not only run, but pick up chunks with his legs.
Another thing is Eli is someone who apparently had to have had at least a modicum of respect for as he was brought as an instuctor for the Manning passing academy. If Manziel is truly refocused, he would have a familiar face with a track record of success as a mentor who can be a fountain of knowledge for him to access whenever he pleases. The Giants have a reputation for being a great organization to be involved with and have more of a leadership structure on the team than they had the last two years.
Manziel as a back up to Eli at the right price might be exactly what he might need to become relevant again. If his recovery is anywhere near what Collins was when he joined the Giants, this team might not have to suffer a hangover after Eli after all. The carrot for Manziel is he would have the inside track on the job after Eli. Id even be willing to pay a little higher than his worth to ensure he is re-committed to his career. And if Eli's play continues to decline, he would be a more viable and interesting successor to Eli than a series of Dave Browns, Kent Grahams and Mike Cherrys. Im not completely sold on the idea, but I wouldnt be opposed the the Giants rolling the dice on this one. This with the assumption JPP gets locked up on a new deal.

BBI.
As far as the future is concerned, I would rather Eli play out his string: he gets hurt or his game falls off a cliff. Then we suck and our draft position is high enough to get a shot at a real QB prospect. People pine for the Aaron Rodgers / Steve Young seamless transition where we never have get down from our high horses. Its not a real plan anymore than drafting high is, it's a dream. Let's give everything we've got for Eli's last run.
You want to invite him to a mini camp? I say go for it. But if I even thought of signing him it would be on my terms. Like he would need to have Charles Way live with him or something and submit to random weekly drug tests.
Ask yourself one question: Even if Manziel turns himself around, is his skill set that outstanding that he'd be anything more than an above average QB? If the answer is no, then there is absolutely zero reason to take a chance on him. Might as well take a 10 year vet to at least know what you have.
voice of reason here ...
BBI.
Boom. Also, Manziel, if you follow it or have ever seen his social media, was "sober" for about 2-3 weeks before declaring he was "clean" to the world. Sorry, but that's a tough buy when he has had several years of douchey coke-booze fueled Instagram posts. He also weighs about 180 soaking wet.
Can't believe there is a thread on this madness.
He couldn't even win a job outright on talent in an arena league. Pure entertainment dance for me clown Bullshit.
But. Allegedly, he's living his charmed life as he sees fit. It's his life, not ours. Good for him I guess.
Kerry Collins' story arc showed him as having a very bad rep as a partier but established himself as an ideal NFL talent prior to his troubles. He was also thought of as a Starter. Im talking as a back up which would be better than what we have now and if there was language that could protect the team if he goes back to his old ways, its not like he could damage the lockerroom. He has no credibility as is.
It was just thought provoking, thought it would make for a better discussion than "he's a disaster." Only point was we've hosted a career redmeption before and we all know its tough to find a game changer at qb.
Not close on the field.
Manziel showed up day 1 as an unprepared asshole with limited physical skills. He got himself run out of the league instantly.
Collins was an established NFL QB who put in his game prep time and energy tot an NFC champ game before his drinking became a problem. And he quickly fixed that problem.
Let's sign Manzel could be the worst idea of 2017 for any football team. There is no reason to do it.
Again, he's nothing like Collins. He's a poor mans Vince Young with less talent and bigger problems than even Young.
Collins is a terrible comparison for Manziel. Collins had actual NFL success before his off-field problems de-railed his career.

This is a little silly. Unprepared? Yes, absolutely. Limited physical skills? Lol. JM is a special athlete. He's just an asshole.
Short. Small. Thin. Weak armed. And stupid. That doesn't get you far in life in the NFL.
His game consists of the drop back, stare at the rush, ignore primary receivers, scramble, and throw. A piss poor version of Vince Young.
That game plan doesn't work in the NFL for a special athlete like Kapernick. And this guy isn't close to that kind of athlete: not close to Young either. And he doesn't make up for it with work ethic and intelligence. He's a hack. Ryan Leaf without the arm talent or size. Hell...even Leaf lasted longer.
His off the field stuff is enough to NEVER consider the fool. His play cements it.
Anybody who thinks this guy should be on the NYG right now is either a fool or trying to make you the fool to believe it.
this is of course after Eli is long gone and we're back to winning 4 games per season.
The Case for Karpernack to be back up......
The Case for Eric of BBI to be back up.....
You can do this all day while you drink green beer.
i would personally look to draft a qb next year or the following year. we are only a few pieces away from another lombardi and wasting time on "whos the next qb" is not a priority right now.
2) he's a major distraction
3) he isn't that good
4) 1 + 2 + being near NYC = big trouble
You say that like it's a bad thing. For me it says...college.
I don't think Johnny Manziel was as BAD in 2015 as some are saying. He's easily one of the least likeable guys we've seen over the past few years so its fun to pile on. Nothing wrong with that, until he gets his act together he deserves the ridicule he brings on himself.
I think there are some tools to work with there. But lets be realistic - its highly unlikely that he is a changed man at this point. And if he is ever going to be serious about football, it would probably be a first for him. And his window is closing fast. I doubt he'll ever be a successful NFL QB.
If so NFT please.
: )
He is just too good to be true....
Manziel is none of those things. There is no reason to believe that he can stay in professional shape, and even if he did, there is no reason to believe that he could replicate Collins's success.
He didnt last long in the league because of his off-field bullshit. And I agree, that's reason enough not to bring him in here.
But dont act as if the guy never had any NFL talent to begin with - Manziel had a couple of decent games as a pro, and Cleveland gave him about 15 chances to clean himself up before cutting him.
Huh? I think your definition of a "look-at-me thread is off. Plus you can always choose to not click on it you little cunt.
For the rest of you, obviously this thread didnt materialize into anything resembling a good discussion. But I am not in any way trying hint that its a move I want the Giants to make. Of course I would assume that some kind of ongoing treatment for him would be a requirement to his getting the deal. I just think the story, if he did walk the straight and narrow and got himself back into consideration for another starting gig would be an interwsting one after the success with KC.
But yes, its a lot more fun to read thread after thread bitching about the linemen we didnt sign or why Hankins hasnt re-signed yet and to call me drunk for considering this.
