The_Boss : 3/17/2017 8:59 am : link
Taking a snapshot right now (3/17) of the landscape in the NFC, I don't see how the NYG have made themselves appreciably better, as Raanan concurs. In my opinion, they haven't closed the gap on or surpassed the top 4 teams in the conference: Atlanta, GB, Dallas, or Seattle. Yes, Dallas is losing players, but they still have 3 All Pros on that OL and their strategy is still going to be play keep away with Elliott (if he's not suspended) and their game managing QB, Dak. Right now, the NYG are pretty much what they were last year: the top WC contender. With them are Tampa and (perhaps) a rebounding Carolina. Yes, there's still a draft to be held and some leftovers to be had in FA, but I think all this talk about Super Bowl might be a little premature at this point.

In my opinion, and Raanan concurrs, they are not much better today than when they walked off the field in Lambeau.

In my opinion, and Raanan concurrs, they are not much better today than when they walked off the field in Lambeau.

Talk about your negative spin.

Barring catastrophic injuries, of course, the Giants defense should be just as formidable in 2017 as it was in 2016, even if they're without Hankins and Robinson, who are both eminently upgradeable (sic). In the draft, I expect the Giants to address both the DT and OLB spots, as well as add to what is already a very stout secondary.

As for the offense, while the O-Line may still have its troubles, Marshall is a huge upgrade from Cruz, and will no doubt prove his worth on 3rd down and in the red zone. Ellison, as a FB, will pave the way for Perkins and whomever else the Giants line up at RB, and assist the OTs in pass-protection much like he did in Minnesota.

In the draft, I expect a pass-catcher to be on the Giants' radar, either a WR or a TE, as well as a good complimentary RB. Another O-Lineman is always a possibility. Sure, the Giants won't be able to solve all of their problems in one draft, but if the FO plays their cards right (as they did last year) they should emerge with another infusion of young talent on both sides of the ball.

In my view, things are looking up.
I dispute the notion that the Giants aren't improved

on Offense with the Ellis and Marshall signings

you can argue that the Oline may not be improved - but just having an accomplished blocker in Ellis added will improve the trench battle and lead blocking - which was virtually nil last year - not to mention that he is a better receiver than Tye or Donnell - which improves the TE situation

Marshall can play the outside - and is a tall experienced end-zone target -- Cruz doesn't play the outside receiver spot well - nor is he a tall end zone target - hence Marshall represents an improvement

Those are two significant upgrades that the Giants had equivalents for in 2015 - with essentially the same line -- main difference being Fluker replacing Newhouse - I don't see a huge difference there

It's possible I may be wrong, but when it comes to my opinions regarding this team, I am right far more than the rare occasions I am wrong. We shall see. At the same time, I am stressing that RIGHT NOW we likely have not surpassed any of the 4 teams that participated in the conference divisional playoffs.

And, for what it's worth, not that I needed validation but the guy we view as the best beat writer for the team happens to agree with my assessment, which I first made on this site last week.
