NFT: Premiere: Marvel's Iron Fist on Netflix

pganut : 3/17/2017 8:02 am
Friendly PSA that Danny Rand is available to put in queue today.

Yes, there are mixed reviews, but that's not going to stop me from watching.

Let's keep any discussion spoiler-free over the next few days to allow for folks having adequate time to watch the series.
Interested to hear some early takes here

I'll probably start it tomorrow
To say reviews are mixed is putting it kindly.
barens : 3/17/2017 10:00 am : link
I'll still check it out as well, but it is getting absolutely roasted by critics. Gonna be tough to watch after what Legion is rolling out.
I was looking forward to it

Until the reviews started coming in. Will give it a try this weekend but not expecting much.
Im halfway through Jessica Jones

It is surprisingly good despite the slow first episode

Power Man and Iron Fist fan I will definitely watch .I liked the Luke Cage series but I was hoping for a better version of Black Mariah .
19% rotten so far

36 Metacritic. Doesn't sound promising.

I don't trust what critics say or what type of rotten/meta scores it gets. I trust more what actual comic book fans and friends say. Most I spoke with this morning have already watched 2-3 episodes and have really liked it so far.

Looking forward to watching a few episodes this weekend.

I don't solely base my decision to watch off that, but it absolutely had some validity if you read the actual reviews. Some are people who are just flaming away but others are thought out and from well respected critics.

Based on the BvS and Suicide Squad scores equaling the outrage among comic book fans, I'd say these scores are probably a lot more accurate than you think. With the amount of comic book movies and shows out there that get scores of 70 or higher, why would those be accurate and not the low scores? Luke Cage was 96% fresh and is in the same class of character as Iron Fist...
Reviews are bad

But I will give it a chance and hope for the best. I have really enjoyed all the other Netflix Marvel shows, so I will watch for completion sake.
Well

At least it's good to have tempered expectations. My husband is really looking forward to this and I have enjoyed many of Netflix's other original series, including JJ, DD, LC, and The Crown. We've not had a chance to watch The Santa Clarita Diet yet but will get to it eventually. I have no doubt my husband will watch the entire Iron Fist series. What we really can't wait for is The Defenders!
The difference is, all the other Marvel Netflix shows
barens : 3/17/2017 1:23 pm : link
have gotten very good reviews. Sometimes, you just make a clunker. I just hope that unlike the current DC universe, they can learn from their mistakes.
I've watched the first two episodes

I'm curious to see where it goes. I can see comments about it being a slow starter, but I think they're helping to create the web that the show will unfold from. The Meachums are straight out of villain central casting, there are some contrived (if not WTF) moments, and I understand some of the criticisms of Finn Jones as Danny Rand (perhaps casting is the issue), but by no means is it unwatchable. Hoping we get to see more fighting sequences. I'll continue on because I've really enjoyed the other Netflix Marvel releases in their own ways.
I have only watched the first episode, but I didn't think it was bad

At all. I'd say 7.5 if I had to give a score. I wasn't a fan of Luke Cage at all, it took me months to actually finish that series, so I'm hopeful this ends up at least being better than that. I've honestly never thought Rand and Cage were the most interesting characters on their own, they play off of each other much better as a duo. Hopefully going forward they combine the twos series into one as "Heroes for Hire."
Iron Fist was always going to be the hardest one to get right
GiantJake : 3/17/2017 3:13 pm : link
Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage all had their own definitive tone. They were gritty and the hero was cool, yet flawed. They were set in Harlem and Hells Kitchen, which means the setting brings a character in itself. Iron Fist is about a rich white kid, returning to NY to try and piece together his life while fighting against other asshole rich white kids. Danny Rand is a good soul searching for truth, yet the setting is soul-less. I'm only just starting Iron Fist, but already you feel like something is missing. I'm not sure if it the lack of a cool soundtrack and feel (ala Luke Cage), lack of an interesting, flawed, badass main character (ala JJ) or the lack of a truly iconic superhero (ala Daredevil). I am going to keep going with Iron Fist and see where it goes...
I thought that Ironfist
Jan in DC : 3/17/2017 3:19 pm : link
would be the easiest. It lends itself to stylistic action/kung fu level fights, mysticism and even a sort of 70s throwback directorial direction. I was the most excited about this one. I'll watch but from the sounds of it, it doesn't accomplish what I want it to.
too corporate
spike : 3/17/2017 3:35 pm : link
not gritty enough?

I watched a couple episodes so far...
JerryNYG : 3/18/2017 12:51 pm : link
I really don't understand the level of criticism that has been directed at it. So far it is not my favorite of the Marvel Netflix series, but it has been entertaining.

I probably won't get to watch the whole thing for a little bit as my leisure time is tight between March Madness and Zelda, but I will definitely continue to watch.
I just finished episode 7
GiantJake : 3/18/2017 12:57 pm : link
and I am enjoying it. It's not my favorite of the Marvel offerings, but I am still interested to see where it goes. I never had any exposure to Iron Fist and had no expectations going in, but I can see how Danny Rand will fit in and I look forward to the Defenders.
Up to episode 5

Jessica Jones was my favorite. Purple Man is the best villain in Marvel and to me, i.s only behind Ledgers Joker.

I agree on Luke cage. It was awful. It just kept getting worse and worse and took me forever to finish. Diamondback was the worst villain ever.
