QB Josh Johnson signing with the Giants, per his agent, @DHendrickson41.

There goes our

freakin' cap! :)
Always

thought he would. Good move by both parties. He stays in a system he knows, and we get a capable back up QB who could step in for Eli for a few games if necessary. Still a real chance the Giants use a day one or two draft pick on a QB, because Johnson is not Eli's successor.

I wonder what the record is?
As long as he comes cheap, I'm good with it.

I'm sure it is only for the vet minimum...
BC Eagles94 : 3/17/2017 10:38 am : link
And he'll prob be gone if we end up taking a QB in the first 4 rounds of the draft.
How does anyone
pjcas18 : 3/17/2017 10:38 am : link
know he's a capable backup?

he hasn't thrown a meaningful pass in 5 years.

arcarsenal : 3/17/2017 10:39 am : link
Yeah, I'm a little confused as to how anyone would feel he's a capable backup. There's really nothing to go by.
apparently...

it's a two year deal...it all depends on the guarantees of course...

Or Nassib was also hurt and had elbow surgery on his throwing arm, supposedly. Not good for a QB.

Looks good with the headphones on too.
yea
kash94 : 3/17/2017 11:01 am : link
pretty much impossible to tell how capable he is.

Only thing maybe worth considering is that he was in a WCO in college and very very good (113 TD and 15 INT in 4 years) so he has some experience there. Then again that was 10 years ago haha.

"If Eli goes down we are fucked anyway" camp so if that happens and its early in the season, I'd almost rather tank and get a top pick.
Correct me if I'm wrong (and I am a lot)
mavric : 3/17/2017 11:07 am : link
but doesn't the cap space only pertain to the top 50 players or something...or maybe it's less than that. It seems I recall that players signed for the minimum salary don't usually end up counting against the cap.

This is true but what if Eli goes down only for 3-4 games. Having a QB that can tread water until he returns would be beneficial if the Giants are in the playoff race.

The second year would sort of piss me off, since it means whatever he makes will count fully against the cap. I can't see any reason to give Josh Johnson anything but a qualifying one-year deal. The accompanying cap relief may not seem like a big difference, but every little bit helps. Is it really that important to have an option on him for 2018? Was another team actually bidding for his services?

That's why I said early in the season. If its a couple games, yes, a competent back up can help us tread water especially with our defense, but if its a long term injury i'd rather just get the high pick.
FWIW, he played on a qualifying deal last year.

$885K salary, $600K cap hit.
Hes a better

Clipboard holder than Nassib
I don't think he is signed to be the back up
hitdog42 : 3/17/2017 11:39 am : link
Would think that is coming soon- with more starting experience- though some won't love it
Geno?
bceagle05 : 3/17/2017 11:40 am : link
I don't think anyone would care. Giants backup QB might as well be in the witness protection program.

Correction: top 51 during the off-season, all players under contract once season starts (53-man roster plus players on IR)
'on Nassib's ability'...
Torrag : 3/17/2017 12:36 pm : link
...Nassib stinks. Said it then and say it now that was a wasted pick. Good thing Eli is the Ironman or we'd have been in real trouble.
The addition of Smith to the picture sheds light on JJ's two-year deal
Big Blue Blogger : 3/17/2017 2:34 pm : link
Johnson is coming to camp as insurance and an arm. If he wins the #2 job, he will have earned it. If not, the non-qualifying format of his deal is irrelevant because his salary will be off the books altogether.
