in the locker room and not a single teammate defends him. This is all we need to know about Geno.

He can run. Apart from that he is a turnover machine with a bad attitude.

Please tell me this is a joke.

He can run based on what, exactly?

Look, this will probably spiral the thread out of control, but just because he's black doesn't mean he's a running QB.

Only an ass clown would make an innocent comment a racial issue. You can fuck of now junior.

Nah, pipe down. You're the one that made a know-nothing assumption based entirely on race.
Ten Ton Hammer: He actually IS a tough runner.

His first two seasons with the Jets, Smith rushed for over 600 yards and 7 TDs, on 131 attempts. Those numbers were a bit of a surprise, because he didn't run a lot at West Virginia.

He's no Michael Vick, and nobody knows how the injuries have affected his mobility, but his resume says he is at least a threat the defense has to account for, especially in the red zone.
Geno wouldn't have been my first choice as a free agent
81_Great_Dane : 3/17/2017 3:07 pm : link
but it seems pretty low-risk to me. He's not guaranteed a roster spot. He'll have to compete to make the team. They can still draft a QB if the draft falls that way. He takes up a roster spot in training camp, and that has some value, but otherwise, he'll have to earn everything.

Not something to get upset about in March, IMHO. Long way to final roster cuts.
So now the Giants can flip Eli to the Browns

for Joe Thomas! Well Played!
As bad as Nassib was...
EricJ : 3/17/2017 3:23 pm : link
I feel far more comfortable having him (vs Geno) come into the game if Eli got hurt.

This really makes you wonder WTF Reese is thinking. I rank Geno in there with Tebow.
Watch out eli

Oh please, Smith is a much better QB than Nassib
Greg from LI : 3/17/2017 4:41 pm : link
Nassib is awful, a complete waste of a draft pick. You'll never see him in an NFL uniform again.
Geno Smith

What is going through Reese's mind in signing Geno Smith?

Smith has demonstrated that he is not a good quarterback. His completion is 57.9 % and his career QBR is 72.4.

He is injured. He is coming off a serious knee injury and has not been able to stay healthy. Played in only 3 games in the last 2 years ( missed most of 2015 after getting his jaw broken in a fight over $600 that he refused to pay Enemkpali )

He is a turnover machine and his errors occur at the worst times. He makes particularly bad decisions in the red zone.

Smith is not an instinctive or smart player.

Reese is enamored by a players physical skills and he thinks his staff can reclaim underachievers. But is this in the best interest of the team?
Josh Johnson is as good as Smith without all the drama. I hope that he is at a minimum contract.

Geno wouldn't be my first choice,
Section331 : 3/17/2017 5:46 pm : link
but we could definitely do worse. He has physical ability, and has had crap coaching in his NFL career. The criteria for any backup is, if Eli goes down for a handful of games, can this guy get us a win or two? I feel better with Geno than I would with Nassib. Don't ask him to do too much, and rely on the D.
Geno sucks
PatersonPlank : 3/17/2017 5:50 pm : link
I have nothing else to add
This might be the single most shocking nyg signing for me
djm : 3/17/2017 10:01 pm : link
Ever. Granted geno is just a backup at best so it's not a high impact move but if I woke up tomorrow morning with my face sewed to the carpet I wouldn't be as surprised as I am now.

Whatever works.. I guess you could do worse at backup but geno has had as dreadful a first 3-4 years as one could have. Would be hilarious if the Giants somehow got him to work.

I don't think it's crazy - Geno has some skills and the Jets
Del Shofner : 3/17/2017 11:00 pm : link
are a complete mess. Low risk, if it doesn't work out, fine.

I think Geno's been unlucky. The Jets are terrible...

This is Geno finally getting a little lucky. He has good physical tools. Can he truly master the position?

If he can't succeed with the Giants, he probably can't succeed, period. But if he's learned from his travails of the last few years, he could surprise us all.

Great post Dane, I agree 100%.

I'd hate to lose out on a comp pick because he was included in the calculations.

Even without him, doesn't JPP's contract factor in or does the formula discard players re-signing with the team? We haven't exactly lost much.
JPP doesn't factor at all. The loss of Newhouse and Gould may count as 7th round picks, especially if Newhouse winds up starting (due to injury). And if we lose Robinson to a multi-year deal that averages $3M-4M/year he could count as a 5th or 6th round pick and cancel out the addition of Ellison (who will count against us in the formula). The key to our compensatory picks will be Hankins. If he gets a bigtime deal he could net a 4th round pick.

As it stands right now, in terms of (potentially) qualifying for the compensatory pick formula we have one addition (Ellison) and two (borderline) subtractions (Gould and Newhouse).

Comp pick formula is heavy on playing time and (I think) evaluates salary compensation relative to your position. So signing a slot DB for $5M that sees 60% of your snaps might net the former team a 4th/5th round comp pick, but signing a backup QB for $5M that doesn't take a snap isn't likely to net them anything.

I don't believe position has anything to do with it. The most significant factor is average compensation per year (the total value of the deal divided by the number of years). Playing time is a factor, but not as much as you would think. It's mostly about the money.

From OTC...
Quote:
Although the formula has never been revealed, by studying the compensatory picks that have been awarded since they began in 1994, I’ve determined that the primary factor in the value of the picks awarded is the average annual value of the contract the player signed with his new team, with an adjustment for playing time and a smaller adjustment for postseason honors.

Thanks for perspective.

Geno may suck as a starter, he wouldn't suck for a backup. He'd be competing for 1 spot with Johnson I have to assume. If we brought in Joe Schmo backup (aka Josh Johnson) people wouldn't complain, it's just because of who Geno is (failed top pick, Jets, face punch, did I say Jets, the whole nine). If he got punched out and failed in JAX no one here would care, it's because it happened locally we saw him happen with lots of media coverage in NY. I don't love the pick, but I think it's fine to compete for the backup spot. Who else is better?

I don't know how we can say Josh Johnson is better when he hasn't thrown an NFL pass in 6 years. He's got a 52% comp % and 55 qb rating to quote the same stats. He's unknown, doesn't make him better. No problem with competition. Let them compete and we'll find out who's better in August.
54.2% and 57.7*
