Few players of note remaining in FA

Big Blue '56 : 3/18/2017 7:41 am
From PFT hot 100 list

Quote:

Overall, only 19 of the Top 100 players remain available. The highest-ranking player available is Cardinals linebacker Kevin Minter, who checks in at No. 44. Also available are No. 48, Bills linebacker Zach Brown, and No. 49, Giants defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins. Those are the only three players available in the Top 50.

So while there are still scores of free agents who will sign in the months ahead, few of them are the kinds of players who change a franchise. Those players were snapped up quickly.

I'm assuming Keenan Robinson

left Cincy earlier in the week without a contract? Or, has he signed with them or anyone else? Haven't seen it as a thread-header here..
Per sportrac,
Jon in NYC : 3/18/2017 7:46 am : link
we have about 15M left, and we should be able to create some more if need be.

If Hank priced himself out, I'd love to bring in Clady for 1 year, 8M to provide some competition. Bring back Robinson too.

What was the reported cap savings for 2017 from JPP contract? 9? 11?

They have his cap hit this year at 7.5, meaning the savings would be a hair under 10.

Thanks Jon..Btw, I notice Folk is close to signing or has signed with Bucs
Also wondering what Zach Brown's

contract demands are or have been?
Zach Brown and Keenan

Would be my top two to resign
Let Hank go and give the position to Bromley and Thomas and draft a late developmental DT
I would stick to one year vet minimum additions...
Milton : 3/18/2017 8:14 am : link
...from here until the draft, with Keenan Robinson being the exception if a modest multi-year deal can be worked out.

After the draft they can re-assess their needs. There's often a pool of veteran free agents on the wrong side of 30 who weren't happy with the offers on the table and decided to wait until after the draft to choose the best situation (i.e., Leon Hall). The Giants can dip into that pool to round out the roster.

As for Ryan Clady, I haven't scouted him personally, but I get the impression from what I've read that there isn't much left in the tank (i.e, Bob McGinn had him ranked behind Marshall Newhouse in his free agent OT rankings).
Zach Brown would

Look very nice in a Giants uniform
Zach Brown fits the recent trend to go younger with starters.
Big Blue '56 : 3/18/2017 8:23 am : link
He's 27 (28 near end of October)..Iirc he's healthy and still talented..
Milton, I don't necessarily disagree with that
robbieballs2003 : 3/18/2017 8:24 am : link
But now that unused cap space is rolled over I think that changes a lot. I feel like sometimes these one year contracts pay the players more than if they signed a multi-year deal. If a player like Robinson has a good year the team doesn't get that benefit of having him again. And, if they do they will wind up paying more.

I would like to have two year deals with minimal garantees so that way if the player stinks they can move on but if he plays well the team still has control of that player. You can also lower the cap hit for the first year and carry that cap space into year 2.

Look at Hankins. I like him but some want him back on a 1 year deal. I don't think Hankins eating up approximately $6 million against the cap this year is wise personally.
robbie, i know one year contracts are the soup du jour,
Big Blue '56 : 3/18/2017 8:30 am : link
but I ALWAYS want 2 yr contracts at a minimum, even if we wind up eating the second year at times due to lack of production..
It is usually a 2 way street though
robbieballs2003 : 3/18/2017 8:33 am : link
So I am sure the players would rather only turn one year older and gamble on themselves to get a better pay day. But, yes, as a team I would rather go with a 2 year deal.
Not a great FA market this year
ZogZerg : 3/18/2017 8:38 am : link
I don't see any team getting the FA impact that the Giants did last year.

My opinion on Hankins is the same as it was in February. I don't want him back. I'd rather they draft a DT in the 2nd or 3rd round. And if the draft doesn't fall that way for them, they can pick up a veteran DT for near the minimum the same way they picked up Leon Hall after the draft. There are always some interesting choices on the wrong side of 30, guys who are surprise cuts just before training camp begins.

This is the kind of bargain hunting I'd like to see going forward. All the A-list and B-list free agents have--for the most part--been scooped up already. No reason to waste good cap space on multi-year deal with a C-list free agent. But like I said, I would still consider a multi-year deal for Keenan Robinson because the continuity he brings gives him added value.
I want Robinson back
SLIM_ : 3/18/2017 8:58 am : link
but we need to be careful. He has a significant injury risk and they had to manage the shoulder last year. I'd like to think that we are strongly considering Reddick and there is multiple sources saying there is an interest in the Vanderbilt linebacker. Either of those, would probably replace Robinson in many packages this year if not all. In obvious passing downs, I think we could bring Collins in the box so he is a nice to have.
As for Zach Brown
Milton : 3/18/2017 9:02 am : link
He is coming off a one year deal and is probably doesn't want to go through another one. I'm sure he would make the Giants a better team, but I think he is probably priced out of what the Giants want to spend. I would certainly take him over Hankins though if the Giants have one more big ticket deal in them.
I suppose there's a reason why JT Thomas
Simms11 : 3/18/2017 9:22 am : link
is still on the team and that's because there's a shortfall in LBERS on the team right now Sheppard, Robinson and Herzlich are all Free Agents and so the Giants will undoubtedly be looking for LBERS at some point.
