Derek Barrnett

What is the general opinion of Derek Barrnett?
I was watching some videos of Cam Robinson. Cam did a good job against Myles Garret but then I watched Cam against Barnett.

Man does Barnett have great quickness. He was constantly beating Cam.

Based upon a small sample he looks like the best edge rusher in the draft.

Even with the signing of JPP Barnett would be a great selection.
We need more pass rushers.

So, I am on board. I don't think he makes it to 23.
I like Barnett a lot
English Alaister : 3/18/2017 10:05 am : link
You don't break Reggie White's sack record at Tenn if you can't play a bit. His hand usage is exceptional...Strahan-esque even.
I think he'll be long gone by the time we pick.
Klaatu : 3/18/2017 10:06 am : link
But I'd sure love to have him.

Barnett, but as others have said, he'll be long gone by #23. Doesn't have great change of direction skills or loose hips, but is bull strong, has good pass rush moves, and is absolutely relentless.

Taco seems very average to me. Williams has his issues off the field. I am not against Reddick but I feel there are a lot of projections with him so I have my concerns.

Absolutely first round. Top 15 in all likelihood.

DE in the draft is a really tough call for me this year. I don't think the Giants will draft one relatively early unless someone they're really in love with happens to fall to them. They've made huge investments in JPP and Vernon, and I think they're content to continue to develop Okwara and Odighizuwa, and they do have a myriad of other needs, some of which they should be able to address in this draft.

Part of our needs is getting to the QB. JPP and Vernon cannot play as many snaps as they did last year and expect them to be healthy all year. I was a fan of Odi and was glad we got him but he hasn't done anything yet and, if I am not mistaken, wasn't even dressed for some games last year. Okwara was a nice surprise but still doesn't provide the pass rush we need.
I agree klattu
Mike B from JC : 3/18/2017 10:29 am : link
But, I think they are going to pickup a olb/ edge rusher like reddick or Cunningham, to help the rush. Think they will look to the second Rd for a OT like moten or 3rd Rd. Hawkins. Then big change of pace RB and a recieving TE along with a DT and CB. Going to be interesting to see who they sign in free agency, now that they have some more cash. Maybe Zach brown? One of the remaining DT?

He just isn't. Didn't test well at the combine. He had an illness, sure, but he was one of the slowest in the 40, had one of the lowest vertical and broad jump numbers, and most importantly, if you watch him play, he just doesn't look that explosive. He wins due to work ethic and technique.

Not saying he's a bad player, but he doesn't fit the mold of someone the Giants usually draft in round one.

I don't think the Giants necessarily have to draft another DE to bolster their pass-rush. Give me an explosive 3-tech DT or a speedy WILL and I think they'll be fine.
Understood.

I just like his quick first step on tape.

Yeah I think that's a big asset and his one standout performance was at the 3 cone, which I think is very important for a DE.
He'd be a good pick

Malik McDowell is a guy that doesn't seem to get a lot of love around here. I've seen him mocked to the Giants but not really discussed. I watched some clips recently and man is he disruptive from the DT and DE spots. Absolutely blows up offensive lineman from time to time. Penetrator type at DT which is what a lot want out of the next guy who plays next to Snacks.

Technique is inconsistent at times but I think he'd be a good fit with the Giants playing both DT and DE.

Me neither. But it would kill 2 birds with one stone in terms of keeping our DEs fresh with a rotation and giving us more in the pass rush department. The Giants do seem to want a pass rusher from the LB position when you see their interest in Floyd last year and when they had interest in Scofield.

I liked what I saw. Some feel he never got better but even got worse his last year. Michigan St., I think, played better when he didn't play. People question his toughness. They question his leadership. They think he needs to be surrounded by good leadership to get the most out of him. He was also moved around the DL which is why he had inconsistency issues. That last part was said about Floyd last year and the Giants were still supposedly very high on him.

I cannot speak for the off the field stuff but I do like what I see on video. I think he would make a great 3 tech on the DL. He could also pop out to DE on some sub packages.

Not to mention Cunningham this year.

I was not an advocate of drafting Odi, purely based on his durability, but I hope he can stay healthy and contribute a bit more than he has since he was drafted. With Okwara, let's not forget that he's only 22 years old. He's still got a lot to learn, but he's learning from two of the best, and I think he's got a pretty bright future with the team.

I have watched Barnett play quite a bit. Would love to see him in Giant blue. The guy is exceptionally quick, and is an excellent rusher.
I hope it clicks for Odi.
robbieballs2003 : 3/18/2017 10:51 am : link
He seems like a great kid but he has to take that next step this year. That would be a huge asset for this team. Nobody us expecting shit out of him. If he can become a rotational guy that gives our starters rest and can help with our pass rush we can really talk about being the best D in football. Our secondary helped create sacks last year because they were so damn good. Can you imagine how good this D would be if the pass rush is helping out the coverage? I also believe we need more pressure up the middle. I don't think Vernon or JPP were bad last year but their numbers weren't what people expected. I believe a good portion of that was we got no push up the middle. A guy like McDowell would help with that or getting another DE so we can move maybe JPP inside to push the pocket like that.

Didn't know anything about the intangible stuff.

Despite that, I think he'd be a good fit. I think with the talent around him and the leadership in place here he could really shine. Coach him up a little and he could be a stud.

I can certainly see the Giants taking a chance on a kid like Chris Wormley, or Tanoh Kpassagnon, or Daehson Hall (to name three), but, again, I think it's more important in this draft to get another DT in the pipeline than it is to find another DE. Even if the Giants re-sign Hankins (which seems doubtful this point), Bromley and Thomas (regardless of what you think of them) are both free agents next year.
If he makes it to 23
Vanzetti : 3/18/2017 12:41 pm : link
could very well be the pick
I'd love to get him - edge rusher is one of our top needs
Eric on Li : 3/18/2017 5:46 pm : link
JPP and Vernon are both excellent 2-way ends, but both are better against the run than rushing the passer. Getting someone with quickness around the edge like we used to have with Osi would take the defense to another level. That could be a LB like Reddick or an end like Willis in round 2, or if someone like Barnett falls that could be a fit too.

He plays great one play and then you don't see him for a series. He is too much of a boom or bust to take in the first round.
My hope is that quarterbacks go early and a Barnett slides to the Giant's at 23.
