My one mock draft of the year - Breakin the Law!

Jim in Forest Hills : 3/18/2017 3:11 pm
Fluker and Jerry are just Red Herrings! Distract, Distract, Strike! They see the market for OL and they are priced out of it. DOUBLE DOWN on OL, woo hoo! Double Hedges against Pugh leaving as well. We take versatility for both prospects. Plus we get a seam buster at TE and a Barry Cofield clone! Plus TWO running backs! Come get this NYG!

1. Forrest Lamp OG - Really athletic kid, 304 lbs of movement, balance and nastiness. Kid's comp is Zach Martin. Projects to OG BUT can play any spot on that line. Booking him for ORG but can play right tackle. He'll get that running game on track. If Pugh wants 10M next year, he can slide there as well. He'll be there at 23 and we'll be so happy! Lamp in blue!

2. Dion Dawkins OT/OG - 3 year starter at OT that has the feet and bend to play outside. 35" arms! Vines for that punch. Has a power based game for the right side. Competes for the RT spot right away. Long term cost effective way of staying competitive for a long time. Not a project, experienced athletic tackle that CAN play OG as well.

3. Bucky Hodges TE/WR - Strictly a move TE. Meant to split out wide and confuse defenses. Has the frame to block but must be taught how. Will line up as a TE but will be a mismatch up the middle with LBs trying to cover him. Hodges is a BIG project. But with Ellison and Admans in the fold, TE can be an upside play. He has through the roof potential as high as Howard and Njoku on the receiving end. Look for him up the seam with OBJ and Marshall outside. Tough decision for defenses, especially if the new OL can protect Eli.

4. Jaleel Johnson DT - Think Barry Cofield. Country strong, naturally thick DT that can disrupt the pocket. Projects to 3 tech, he can get to the QB. I love him next to Snacks, this kid can be really violent getting off blocks and causing QB discomfort. Will thrive next to Harrison's doubleteams.

5. James Conner RB - Straight up Power back ala Brandon Jacobs. Arm tackles tickle him. Falls forward, moves the pile. Can cut and make you miss in the hole. TD machine in short yardage. High character, great story. 4/5 year battering ram to punish defenses. He hurts people and can intimidate a defense late in games.

6. Vince Beigel OLB - Plays the Leonard Floyd joker role. This kid can play. He can rush the passer, he is quick to diagnose the run. He can cover in space and reads QBs well. He's a glue guy, Wisco wasn't the same without him when he was hurt.

7. Donnel Pumphery RB/WR/RS - A really good football player drops because he is too small. This kid has the make you miss qualities you want in space, on 3rd down, on punt returns etc. Starts as a backup RB that returns kicks but can also play slot WR as well. Will win the Bill Parcells "Hidden yards."

Very nicely done

Love all the picks except 6th round. Not that I don't like Buegel but I would go for CB depth here
Shaq Griffin or Ezra Robinson
But once again. Nice job
I want impact players in the first two rounds
Blue Angel : 3/18/2017 3:16 pm : link
OL men usually are not impact players.
I'd be fine with that.

I think you've landed at least two eventual starters for us. I'm not crazy about Bucky Hodges given his drops, but he's sure an intriguing target (likely as a WR, imo).
We

are not taking OL in rounds one and two. Johnson and Pumphrey won't be available in the fourth and seventh rounds.

Even Hodges might not make it to the end of the third as well...

Eli is our impact player! They will elevate him!
James Conner sounds interesting

Beat cancer...

Beats the hell out of corner backs as well...

Has BBI been tossing his name around?
2 OL in the first two picks gets my vote!
SterlingArcher : 3/18/2017 4:27 pm : link
As for Pumphrey, I saw him play here in SD, not very big but very explosive, great speed and can take it to the house on any play.
I mean absolutely no offense....

....but I completely disagree.

Everyone is obviously entitled to their own thoughts and opinions, but I'm not a fan.

I don't mind Lamp as a player, but I don't think he's a 1st round prospect. I think this is a bit of a reach for a guard with some questions like level of play. I get that his comp is Martin, but Martin was a can't miss.

Similar thoughts for Dawkins. Wouldn't mind him in the 2nd (although I'd like him better in the 3rd) but he's strictly a guard in the NFL and has some technique issues.

So we essentially took two guards in the first two rounds. I wouldn't mine two linemen, but in think there are more pressing needs on the roster and drafting two guards is not wise.

I really dislike the Hodges pick. Remind me of Travis Beckum. Zero blocking skills. Spent no time as and in line TE. Converted QB. Rather get a traditional two-way TE.

I dont mind Johnson, but I just personally prefer other DT's in this range like Davon Godchaux or Carlos Watkins better. Just a preference.

James Connor is a great story, but I don't know ow if his style works behind this line. A slashing, explosive back would be a better fit. I think of Jennings when I see Connor.

Beigel is probably better suited for a 3-4 front. This team has not has much success with tweeners and I'm not sure he'll last this long.

Pumphery fits the scheme, but again, redundant with two RB's with other needs.

My work is done here. I am handing the 'staff of greatness' to you. Oh, wait, I did not mean that to come out that way.

I mean, fuch yeah. Only caveat, DT Montavious Adams is a player, but, great draft. so so many reasons.
That's a big no
Mike B from JC : 3/18/2017 6:53 pm : link
That would give us 4 gaurds for two spots. You don't draft oline just to draft them. They have to be BPA which at that point in the draft, they won't be. Need a DT and Wlb who will play right away. Neither one of those oline are ready to start.

shouldn't drop to the 6th. Everything else looks good.

but double dipping on OL in the first 2 rounds of a weak OL class doesn't seem like a great strategy. In fact, targeting a position is usually a bad plan in the early rounds.

The OL in the first couple rounds this year will likely go higher than they deserve. The value will be at other positions.

...and Lamp doesn't have the length for tackle.
crazy

:p
You drafted two O-linemen...
Torrag : 3/18/2017 11:41 pm : link
...that can't play LT...ever. One I get, but the second has to project to LT down the road. I like the Jaleel Johnson pick for the role you ascribe to him.
Let's look at where those prospects are projected...
Milton : 3/19/2017 12:28 am : link
CBS Prospect Rankings
The Huddle Report Value Board
Great Blue North Big Board

To the left of the prospect's name is where the Giants are selecting and to the right of the prospect's name is where each of the draft sites has him projected(CBS, THR, GBN)...

1 (23) Forrest Lamp OG (28, 27, 21)
2 (55) Dion Dawkins OT/OG (52, 61, 44)
3 (87) Bucky Hodges TE/WR (74, 70, 51)
4 (140) Jaleel Johnson DT (98, 99, 178)
5 (167) James Conner RB (160, UR, 163)
6 (207) Vince Beigel OLB (146, 139, 128)
7 (241) Donnel Pumphery RB/WR/RS (162, 187, 200)
Great feedback

Before anyone says Lamp can't play the tackle position I urge you to watch Lamp vs Alabama where he stoned Jonathan Allen, Tim Williams and Ryan Anderson, all future NFL players. Watch his movement skills and his power. He can play OT.

Also believe that the Giants want to keep Flowers on the left side.

Milton thanks

Once you get past rd 3 or 4 those draft rankings start to get meaningless. There is too much variability between team boards and needs that players can go anywhere.

Just think of Mikkel Thompson in rd 5, who would have thought.
