Giants interested in signing Nick Mangold?

dk in TX : 3/18/2017 6:40 pm
I heard this nugget while listening to Dan Graca and Willie Colon (ex Jet Offensive lineman) ESPN NY podcast today. Start from about the 30th minute. They discussed Brandon Marshall and Gino Smith potential signing too. I agree with Colon on Gino. I don't want any part of Gino in Giants' blue.

However, I am all in, on bringing Mangold as a wally-old veteran to play right guard/back-up center and to serve as a mentor to Flowers, Hart, Flucker, Richburg etc. I heard him on Francesa a little while ago say that he is open to playing guard.

Thoughts?

play OT?

Thats what we need
How many Guards do you need on a team?
ZogZerg : 3/18/2017 6:46 pm : link
The Giants have like 7 already.
We need a veteran leader and mentor in that O-line

Besides, I am not a big fan of Jones. He is too little and too injury prone. To have Mangold back up and mentor Richburg will be great.

Get rid of all the scrubs. Let Flucker and Hart battle it out Right Tackle.
Jerry can back up Mangold.

Had a significant ankle injury last year that shut him down. I'm sure he's strong as an ox, but can he move? I'd prefer to draft an interior OL next month.
Sign me up, I love the guy

He is an animal and a great veteran presence for a shitty line. Bring him in at a good price and let him compete, the more the merrier.

Quality over quantity.

I'm not opposed to anyone who can play.

And really don't understand how the Geno Smith thing affects anyone at all. He has an outside shot of making it through training camp. His career is essentially in the trash can. The locker room is filled with players a lot better than he is. If he's any kind of problem they'll boot him immediately. If he's not, he's a perfectly normal backup QB: One you hope never plays.
Bring in any body/player that might bring something to this Team

Fair enough. I figured you might have been misspelling "wily."
As usual, this is commentator bullshit
Bob in Newburgh : 3/19/2017 7:05 am : link
Mangold never, to the best of my knowledge, played OG during his very long career with the Jets.

So he would actually be a very risky signing by a team that does not have money to spread around.

I am sure this stupid idea will resurface on BBI.

Did you listen to the podcast? Willie Colon was Mangold'so teammate for years. Players and ex-players often have some inside information that press and public may not have.

Besides, I heard that teams want Mangold to convert to guard. Check Francesa's podcast archives for the Mangold interview.
Correction: It was actually the Michael Kay Show

terrific insurance for Richburg and competing for an OG spot. Why would I oppose such a move, given his experience and the depth he would provide? I didn't watch much of him last year, so perhaps he's slipped. If not, go for it

+1
So we should sign him, even though conversion to OG has risk
Bob in Newburgh : 3/19/2017 9:15 am : link
I am glad none of you run anything.

He also takes up a roster spot which most of you are arguing we should be using quality draft picks on.

Bob, I hear you, but we bring in Vet depth all the time. It's a must..We were apparently willing to bring in 35 year-old Whitworth TO START given we are, IMHO, SB contenders, so why not Mangold? To me, just having a savvy vet in the lockerroom who could provide valuable back-up for Richburg, is, to me, worth the roster spot. If he could actually play OG, that would be a bonus..
Mangold isn't signing anywhere
area junc : 3/19/2017 9:28 am : link
to be a backup. He's a starter until he quits playing.

If we actually do sign him - Jerry just got starter $ - that means Pugh back to RT. Which isn't a bad thing.

Flowers - Mangold - Richburg - Jerry - Pugh

with a motivated Fluker on a 1-year prove it deal battling for a spot. He may just outplay Jerry.

Three years deal for $10 million, $4.25 million guaranteed is not remotely close to what starting guards got in the 2017 NFL Free Agency market.

Try that tool called GOOGLE.
Mangold - Out of the box
GMen23 : 3/19/2017 11:55 am : link
As a life long Giant fan from Northeast PA (Scranton), who has lived in Orlando for 34 years, there are many BBIer’s, with more connection to Mangold then me. However, I just listened to this entire Kay/Mangold podcast. What a class guy.

Love him saying, they can kick me off the team, but they can’t kick me out of NY. I almost want to sign him as OL Coach. I don’t really care how many mediocre OG’s we have. And what the hell did Richburg do last year to makes us feel we have our center for a decade.

On the negative side, it gives me pause, that to my knowledge, no other teams have reached out to him. If we get a Hometown discount, I’d like to have him.
He's shot.

The Giants regularly take lineman and play them "out of position"
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/19/2017 12:07 pm : link
all the time. Bob's anger issues aside, Pugh didn't play guard in college. I don't believe Diehl played tackle in college, and certainly not LT. Richburg didn't play guard in college. Newhouse never played guard in his career before they needed him to here.

The only linemen the Giants haven't asked to play multiple roles are Kareem McKenzie, Chris Snee, and Shaun O'hara.

Mangold doesn't fill a need......at all!
Milton : 3/19/2017 2:41 pm : link
It would be one thing if they were bringing him in to start or they lacked depth at interior OL or he was a tackle. But he checks none of those boxes. And fuck that mentor crap. Let him retire and then bring him in as an assistant OL coach if that's what he brings to the table.

The Giants are going to draft at least one OL and probably two. There is no roster spot for Mangold. His best strategy is to wait by the telephone and hope for someone to wind up on IR. Preferably someone on the Cowboys.

area junc : 3/19/2017 3:33 pm : link
I don't have to Google it. Teams don't give backup Offensive Linemen $4M+ guaranteed - that's a lot of coin.

And it's pretty simple why: backup OL don't play besides being on the FG team. Nobody's writing a guy a check for $4.25M not to play.
Buyer beware
djm : 3/19/2017 3:58 pm : link
Mangold barely made it through the 2016 season. He was not the same player. How many older players rebound after a down year? And mangold was banged up throughout the year. Appears that it's ending quickly for him.
