You do realize signing him won't preclude taking a CB in the draft, right?
Exactly. If we've learned anything from the past few seasons, you can never have enough depth, especially with our DBs. Having an experienced vet in at a reasonable cost would be a solid move.
First of all, he played well last year, coming over mid-season and getting thrown into the shuffle right away.
Secondly, he is not a cover guy, he is a very good special-teamer and blitzer out the the slot, which is why he played a lot in sub-packages and in the playoff game.
Spagnuolo likes CBs who can blitz off the edge and make tackles around the line of scrimage, things he does well.
Yes, at the end of the day, he's a 4th or 5th CB but he provides veteran depth and contributes in a number of ways. He's actually a guy I was hoping they bring back.
meh he stinks as a corner. Can he play some FS in a pinch? or bring him in to camp with the intention of jettisoning him unless injuries pile up. Don't want him on the game day roster.

We have signed CB Coty Sensabaugh to a two-year contract.
Bring on the 2018 compensatory picks!
There is no comp picks for players that you sign and then lose. The only players that factor into comp picks are those that are drafted and are signed by other teams after the rookie deal. It is one of the reasons why the Patriots will trade for players in their last year of contract so they get the comp picks when that player leaves.

But it makes sense to bring him back and let him compete.

I think the Giants draft corner somewhere between 4-6

Me three.
Good wager they'll draft a CB in round 2 or 3, I suspect.
