and GL defense, probably on an economical (minimum) contract.
Fine by me, some continuity is good and he finally has settled into an ideal niche role, rather than being exposed as a sometime-starter and having to play in space as part of the base defense.
You're right. It's not like teams need good special team players. You're quite opinionated about football, but seem to lack simple fundamental thinking of the game.

There were 2 punt returns for TDs last season that were called back in thanks to Mark Herzlich.

Eli threw interceptions, DRC and Jenkins gave up plays at times etc, what is your point?
Because a player doesn't play perfect they aren't any good?
Are you debating that herzlich is not a good special teams player? What else do you have to support your case, other than some random penalties?
he's a warrior (Beating cancer) and has been a solid special teams player; but the love for him and Kerry Wynn is strange in my opinion. Both making over 1.5 million.

He actually had a few other penalties, the ones I mentioned were his most egregious ones. He's also not even a decent backup at LBer. Why are you so defensive? Maybe you should go outside for a walk?

Why are people getting so worked up? He's here for ST, assuming he even makes the team. I wouldn't be surprised if none of Herzlich, Geno, or Valentino are on the 53.
And I did just go for a walk. Fresh air would do some people here a lot of good.

Oh shut the hell up and open your eyes. The guy stinks. And he's average on special teams as well.

He's a below average starter. Are you some sort of savant on special teams play? Herzlich is a guy that's become so overrated that he's actually now underrated.
But, at this point, it is ridiculous that they are re-signing him. A team with the hopes of contending and holes to fill does not have the luxury of keeping a guy like him any longer. There are other guys who can contribute on ST and play another position.
And please note that saying he shouldn't be re-signed
is not saying ST are not important and not a sign of misunderstanding the need for ST. They now have Harris who is essentially being retained for a few downed punts even though he was less than mediocre on both KR and PR and made rookie mistakes in his decisions and now Herzlich who is a good ST coverage guy. Neither is particularly good at their actual roster position and this is a team with other needs. These are valuable roster spots right now.
Solid vet depth guys go for more than $1-1.5M often. Guys like Herz & Wynn are definitely useful pieces to have around. You can't have a roster of 53 starters, plus we're in the offseason - no guarantee who makes the roster (so concerns over who may be cut for who else are premature). ST players are a need to, especially when talking about your #6 WR or LB or #5 CB or DE, etc. It's not like Herz is preventing any other move by his price or presence on roster. And obv the coaches/front office like him.
Unfortunately, a post like that - even in jest - has a way of echoing around the Internet. Considering the horrors Mark and Danielle Herzlich have both overcome in their young lives (especially Danielle), maybe we should stick to his deficiencies as a football player.
Yes, Mark Herzlich is close with several members of the Mara family. Yes, his tenure and job security seem disproportionate to his contributions on the field. There are plenty of valid reasons to hope the Giants gave him nothing more than a one-year qualifying deal this time.
Firstly, he has to make the team..Secondly, he's still a viable STer and last resort LB depth who won't really hurt you..Thirdly, if he makes the team, who would he be robbing of a roster spot that would be an upgrade over him?
If they want to hang onto a guy that's socially involved with their family and has an inspirational story for a small contract they can do so. Just don't get all holier than thou that it's about his ability as a football player. He isn't good in any role including special teams and provides no long term upside. This is about a person they like to have around, not what happens on gameday.

Has the organization touted Herzlich's ability that much? The entire post about the signing on Giants.com yesterday consisted of a twitter link:

I haven't seen the team pretend that he is anything more than he is. And I don't think he's much, plus the concussions are starting to accumulate.

+1 😁😂
If he has very minimal snaps on defense, I'm good with it.
If he has any substantial time with the defense... ugh.

Aside from Marshall and Ellison? You mean the two guys that filled glaring holes on the offense?
Aside from that?
Yeah, I guess aside from that they didn't improve anything.
You have to sign depth players and guys who play ST's, too. It's part of football. Every team has these guys.

Yes, it is. But, re-signing the same guys who don't improve from year to year doesn't exactly send a strong message either.
Doesn't he still have to make the team? Won't there be competition in camp?
And doesn't this signal that the Giants actually value him as a special teams player?
This is not a core player. He may be good on specials coverage teams, but I have not seen the plays to indicate he is a foundation player.
Hopefully, he is beaten out and we finally move on. News to Giants management - team speed is a critical element to being good.
He adds a lot of value?
Yep.
You just can't stash prospects and cross your fingers that they can play specials.
You actually need some guys willing to do it, and be effective at it.
