NFT: Yanks chat 3/21 - Didi update

Del Shofner : 3/21/2017 4:03 pm
per RAB:

The Yankees received good news and bad news about Didi Gregorius and his injured shoulder today. The good news: it’s a relatively minor strain and he will be shut down from baseball activities for two weeks. The bad news: Gregorius will miss Opening Day. Bummer.
Sucks
illmatic : 3/21/2017 4:08 pm : link
but at least it wasn't something worse. Hopefully he comes back feeling close to normal.
Tejada
shelovesnycsports : 3/21/2017 4:11 pm : link
might make the opening day roster.
good news for a good player. keeps the calls to rush Torres at bay.
Victor in CT : 3/21/2017 4:15 pm : link
Cashman really deserves alot of credit for that acquisition.
Watch out for....
Ed A. : 3/21/2017 4:21 pm : link
Wade. He has has a good spring and could wind up the starter until DiDi is ready.
That should be had
Ed A. : 3/21/2017 4:22 pm : link
he has had a good spring etc. etc.
more, from ESPN:
Del Shofner : 3/21/2017 4:24 pm : link
"Didi Gregorius will be out for Opening Day, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. Gregorius' shoulder will prevent him from baseball activities for two weeks, then he will start a throwing program. Girardi doesn't know yet who will replace Gregorius."

I'd guess he'll miss the first 15 games or so, assuming all goes well with the rehab.
Torreyes makes the most sense...
Dunedin81 : 3/21/2017 4:42 pm : link
As it wouldn't require a 40-man move. Wade would, as would Tejada or even Kozma.
as to the cause of the injury ...
Del Shofner : 3/21/2017 4:43 pm : link
per RAB:

Gregorius hurt himself making a throw while playing second base in a World Baseball Classic tune-up game in Arizona over the weekend, Girardi told Michael Silverman. The Netherlands clinched a spot in the semifinals last week, and they had a long layoff before last night’s game because they had to travel from Tokyo, so they played an exhibition game to stay sharp.

[gotta love that WBC ...]
That is GREAT news
superspynyg : 3/21/2017 5:02 pm : link
So he misses opening day. Think long term not short!
gotta figure
djm : 3/21/2017 5:03 pm : link
the shoulder was going to go at some point. Maybe getting hurt early turns out to be a blessing. Better to lose him now than in August. A stretch, I know...I get the WBC hate...but maybe it was an inevitable injury.

He's expected to miss all of April. Glad it's not worse, but that's still quite some time to replace him.
If they have any hope of

getting something for Refsnyder, wouldn't mind seeing Castro temporarily slide to SS and giving Ref an audition at 2B
for a rebuild year
RasputinPrime : 3/21/2017 10:40 pm : link
it could be worse but with Didi coming into his own, i'm pissed he won't get to show whether he is the long term solution right out of the gates.
the WBC just seems to have bad karma for the Yanks -
Del Shofner : 3/21/2017 11:34 pm : link
basically ended Teix's career. Hopefully this is just a bump in the road for Didi. But I'd like to see the Yanks prohibit WBC participation going forward. The players are put in very bad positions injury-wise, as they are forced to fly around the world on a very weird schedule and get into "important game" situations before their bodies are ready.

Just my $.02. I know people think I'm a hater, but this is twice now.

As a Canadian I haven't been able to watch a single game on MLB.TV live or archived. The WBC can suck my bawls.

I would rather see Wade.
I suspect the Yankees will keep Wade in Scranton
Greg from LI : 3/22/2017 8:49 am : link
Playing the outfield in pursuit of their project to turn him into a utility guy who can play everywhere, but that's just a guess on my part. If Didi were going to be out for a long time, I think Wade would have a better shot, but in the short term I think they stick with the plan.
I know the Yanks' plan, but why not see how Wade does for a month
Jim in Hoboken : 3/22/2017 12:13 pm : link
if you think he can hit about .250? He may show signs of being a legit SS and you can spin him for another piece. If not, go back to the plan of super utility guy.

Didi is an impressive SS at his size, and if he's going to hit the ball with authority from now on he's a valuable piece. None of the prospects we are gushing about may not be on his level defensively. When is he hitting free agency anyway?
Wade should go to AAA Scranton
GiantJake : 3/22/2017 1:04 pm : link
Torreyes and Starlin Castro can play SS with Refsnyder getting some games at 2B. Wade will be available at Scranton if needed. It's easy to get excited about the young players, but there is no reason to rush Wade. Stick to the plan. Let the young players develop.
Wade is not on the 40-man roster.
Del Shofner : 3/22/2017 1:31 pm : link
They'll put Didi on the DL but I don't know whether that opens up a spot on the 40-man (as distinguished from the active) roster. I don't think so.
Bird has won the job
shelovesnycsports : 3/22/2017 1:35 pm : link
Of everyday 1B according to Girardi. This is great news. Yanks need the left handed power bat everyday.

You have to put a player on the 60 day DL to open a roster spot. I suspect the easy move would be to put Austin on the 60 day DL, backdated to the injury- and that would open a spot- but the Yanks might have already had a prior plan to use that spot for someone else. We will see.
Sanchez walks... Bird follows with HR that bounces out
shockeyisthebest8056 : 3/22/2017 2:33 pm : link
of the Phillies' spring training park.

Tanaka has held them scoreless through 4.1
Sanchez misses an opposite field HR by 5 feet... held to a single
shockeyisthebest8056 : 3/22/2017 2:43 pm : link
because he hit it too damn hard.

Greg Bird follows with 3 run HR.

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT.
Bird is by far the biggest story of the spring for me.
bceagle05 : 3/22/2017 3:55 pm : link
He looks like a freaking monster out there. Sanchez and Bird alone make this season exciting for me.
CF Jorge Mateo
Jim in Hoboken : 3/22/2017 4:07 pm : link
SS Gleyber Torres
C Gary Sanchez
1B Greg Bird
DH Aaron Judge
LF Blake Rutherford
RF Clint Frazier
3B Miguel Andujar
2B Wilkerman Garcia

Let's go.
I like the idea of Sanchez batting 2nd. Thenbird 3rd, Holliday 4th
Victor in CT : 3/22/2017 4:16 pm : link
Judge 5th, Castro, etc.

Liked it when the Mets batted Cespedes 2nd too. with a runner on and Bird behind him he will see pitches to hit, and in a tight game has a chance to get one more at bat late
I'm trying to temper my expectations for Bird
Greg from LI : 3/22/2017 4:20 pm : link
But man, he looks sensational this spring. I would have been happy with a simple repeat of his rookie year performance stretched out over an entire season, but he looks like he's going to do better than that.

Bird obviously recovered from his surgery, is there really a need for Carter. How effective will he be coming off the bench. I believe when they signed him it was as an insurance in case Bird had any setbacks.

That's what I have been asking. But, it's not just Bird. Judge, Holliday. I guess Carter is insurance for an injury and to give each of these guys a day off a week. But, I don't really want Carter's bat in the lineup 3 or times a week. His power is nice, but the Ks and his other numbers are terrible.

It's like night and day from the AFL, where he had an explosive first game and then did nothing. He has been an absolute monster this Spring. He's hitting for average and power. The doubles, for me, are just as good an indicator as the HRs.

I could go either way with Bird 2 and Sanchez 3 or vice versa.
Matt M. : 3/22/2017 4:51 pm : link
But, how likely is this? On an everyday basis, aren't we likely to see the combination of Ellsbury and Gardner in the 1/2 slots? That likely puts Bird at 5 or 6.

Girardi already has said that the Gardy/Ells duo at 1-2 will be broken up

I didn't catch that. Thanks. Who is moving down and how far?
Nolan Martinez got glowing reviews today...
Dunedin81 : 3/22/2017 10:03 pm : link
Change was filthy, curve was impressive, velo not elite (90-92, though he has the frame to potentially throw harder) but his spin rates were some of the best in the draft. Could be an elite pitching prospect by year's end.
