When Players Get Paid

FatBoyLacy : 3/21/2017 4:07 pm
Do Geno, Johsnon, and Herzlick not get paid until the first preseason game? If so, if we cut them before that game do they not get any money?

Or do they get part of their salary when they show up to training camp?

If a player gets a 1 mil signing bonus to they get that whole amount once they sign the contract?
base salary gets split up into 16 game checks

signing bonus gets paid when you sign

if there are no guarantees and you get cut, you get nothing
Base Salary is over 17 weeks

The bye is included

Per diem is paid for off season/training camp/ pre season games.

As for signing bonus

Usually it is all received at signing, however sometimes teams have delays in bonuses...ala Aaron Hernandez.

He obviously wanted to stay

I am glad it worked out. Losing him would have left a whole in pass coverage.

.
It all depends on how the contract is structured

The signing bonus goes right to a player. There are some deals where that's the only guaranteed money. For example: Kelvin Sheppard signed a one-year, $760K deal last year with an $80K signing bonus, and only the bonus was guaranteed.
Other deals will guarantee all or part of the base salary, e.g. Jasper Brinkley's $1.2 million base (plus a $500K roster bonus) was all guaranteed. If something is guaranteed, it stays on the books after the player is cut. If not, they can release that player without cap penalty.
I thought,

If a player signs a contract, and makes the roster, and is on the roster for the first game, his money is guaranteed for the rest of the year, even if eventually cut...that's why some free agents are signed after the first game, because if cut, the rest of their money is not guaranteed....
