As all Knicks fans probably know, there is now considerable discussion that Melo will waive his no-trade and leave after this season. Two benefits to the Knicks are obvious: cap room, and the opportunity to pursue a an athletic, quick small forward along with a pass-first point guard, between free agency with cash to spend, and the draft.
The question I have is simple: do the Knicks actually get anything back for Melo? What might that be? Draft pick? Rotation player? What?
lebron follows after 1 more year in cleveland
Build around Porzingis and Hernangomez.
Hopefully build it right for once.
Only team I can really see giving away assets to get rid of salary are the Lakers for two reasons:
1.) Trying to be somewhat relevant. Melo might only add 3-4 wins, but he's an LA brand name player.
2.) They will only get anything in return if the Knicks would take on Deng or Mozgov (or maybe both). Maybe they give Randle, Clarkson or Dlo as a reward for doing so.
Only reason it makes sense is if they really think PG is serious about LA. They would need to clear some salary (Randle would be getting a likely near-max deal that same offseason).
And that's just my dream scenario. No team is giving up anything of value for a 34 year old washed up expiring. No team is a Carmelo Anthony away from anything in 2017.
It wouldn't be as much as taking on Melo as it is getting rid of horrible contracts to get Paul George (which seems like a realistic goal for LA).
And they aren't getting PG unless they shed one or both of the contracts. And it's risky giving anymore 1st rounders considering how awful the Lakers are. Those are valuable. D-Lo and Randle are valuable, too. Clarkson is too, but not as much and his salary isn't insignificant.
Probably the single biggest mistake of the Phil era. Fisher and Noah are just paychecks.
Yet 0 landed.
That's NOT including an extension for Tarek Black, the salary of their 1st rounder this year/next year, or signing anyone this offseason to anything more than a 1 year deal.
Realistically, they might only be able to offer PG a $10M a year deal if they want to keep all of their young players/picks.
I can guarantee at least one of Randle, Clarkson, or D-lo will not be on the Lakers in 2018-19. Not saying the Knicks get one of them, but some team will.
It's insane. The Bulls arent even good and the Raptors are. I need to see a breakdown of why the Raps get wrecked by Chicago every single time they meet.
One day after he sounded as if his future in New York was in doubt, Anthony revealed Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek told him at Tuesday’s practice that his minutes will decrease, so the coach can get a closer look at their six rookies. With the Knicks at 27-43, out of the playoff race and facing the Jazz Wednesday, Anthony said he’s OK with it.

Lots of things are off the table if they don't get their pick this year. They're fucked. You can add Paul George to their current team heading into next year and I don't think they'd make the playoffs. They need Ball/Fultz/Jackson in the worst way.
Key to the NBA is roles. Guys who are put in the wrong role are in over their head and people say "he sucks". Put that guy in the right role and he's lauded.
That is Melo's issue. He is miscast as a top player on a good team now. He isnt that. Make him the 3rd best player? He's the toast of the league. Smart GMs will recognize that. Smart GMs wont overpay for that though.
There are numerous reasons why the Knicks are awful on the defensive end, but Melo at the 3 is high on the list. Assuming that Hernangomez will grow into the starting 5 alongside KP, there is an urgent need for a fast, young, athletic 3, or the Knicks just won't ever get much better.
Enough is enough. For God's sakes - we're 1/2 a suck level from being the Cleveland Browns of the NBA.

But if you think about the Knicks in respect to the Nets and the magic, it could still somehow be worse.
Bad reference for a Giants board but I'd equate the Knicks to the eagles. Poor management, but they still got "their guy".
Integrating the Melo chatter, it really sucks Melo has limited destinations.
Not really sure what assets the Pelicans would have or how salaries would even work but you have Melo play the 3 there (or even come off the bench) it would make things interesting.
I really think he's closer to a third star than a missing championship piece.
i jist hope melo expands his list, cleveland and the clipperd have zero draft picks
Where was this 20 games ago? Would've been nice.

and Hahn said Melo's telling people he's out of here.

He'd starve.
It all starts with Dolan.
