NFT: Knicks talk: what could the Knicks possibly get for Melo?

manh george : 3/21/2017 8:24 pm
As all Knicks fans probably know, there is now considerable discussion that Melo will waive his no-trade and leave after this season. Two benefits to the Knicks are obvious: cap room, and the opportunity to pursue a an athletic, quick small forward along with a pass-first point guard, between free agency with cash to spend, and the draft.

The question I have is simple: do the Knicks actually get anything back for Melo? What might that be? Draft pick? Rotation player? What?

If a team needs to shed salary to take him, we might get garbage
yatqb : 3/21/2017 8:27 pm : link
back, something Phil refused to do w/re to Crawford. But I'm guessing that we'd also get a few #1s.
I'd think they would need to take back salary to make it work?
djm : 3/21/2017 8:28 pm : link
So I'll say a rotation player, and older player on a one year big contract and a lottery protected first is what they get. In other words not much.
my prediction
nygiants16 : 3/21/2017 8:32 pm : link
lakers get ball, knicks trade melo to lakers for russell and fillers, they sign wade and paul in off season...

lebron follows after 1 more year in cleveland
Hopefully draft picks
larryflower37 : 3/21/2017 8:33 pm : link
And expiring contracts.
Build around Porzingis and Hernangomez.
Hopefully build it right for once.
No way of knowing until
Keith : 3/21/2017 8:33 pm : link
we know how many teams are in the running. The more teams, the better the return. That being said, teams would be dumb to give anything of value for melo.
He is an expiring
giantsfan44ab : 3/21/2017 8:37 pm : link
not a star. He's just a big fat expiring contract. Which means he will only get value if a team is shedding salary.

Only team I can really see giving away assets to get rid of salary are the Lakers for two reasons:

1.) Trying to be somewhat relevant. Melo might only add 3-4 wins, but he's an LA brand name player.

2.) They will only get anything in return if the Knicks would take on Deng or Mozgov (or maybe both). Maybe they give Randle, Clarkson or Dlo as a reward for doing so.

Only reason it makes sense is if they really think PG is serious about LA. They would need to clear some salary (Randle would be getting a likely near-max deal that same offseason).

And that's just my dream scenario. No team is giving up anything of value for a 34 year old washed up expiring. No team is a Carmelo Anthony away from anything in 2017.
They badly missed the window on getting value back

It wouldn't be as much as taking on Melo as it is getting rid of horrible contracts to get Paul George (which seems like a realistic goal for LA).

And they aren't getting PG unless they shed one or both of the contracts. And it's risky giving anymore 1st rounders considering how awful the Lakers are. Those are valuable. D-Lo and Randle are valuable, too. Clarkson is too, but not as much and his salary isn't insignificant.
If the next get Russell for Melo

Probably the single biggest mistake of the Phil era. Fisher and Noah are just paychecks.

Yet 0 landed.
If the Lakers intend on keeping Randle
giantsfan44ab : 3/21/2017 8:53 pm : link
they will be about $7-10M a year short of a max offer for PG (ballpark math).

That's NOT including an extension for Tarek Black, the salary of their 1st rounder this year/next year, or signing anyone this offseason to anything more than a 1 year deal.

Realistically, they might only be able to offer PG a $10M a year deal if they want to keep all of their young players/picks.

I can guarantee at least one of Randle, Clarkson, or D-lo will not be on the Lakers in 2018-19. Not saying the Knicks get one of them, but some team will.
Haha yeah a couple of swings and misses.

It's insane. The Bulls arent even good and the Raptors are. I need to see a breakdown of why the Raps get wrecked by Chicago every single time they meet.
Yeah

NY Post: Knicks tell Melo to get used to the bench
manh george : 3/21/2017 9:27 pm : link
Quote:
With the Knicks down 25 points, Carmelo Anthony sat out the fourth quarter at Staples Center on Monday against the Clippers. With the season down to a dirty dozen games, Anthony better get used a view from the bench — even in closer contests.

One day after he sounded as if his future in New York was in doubt, Anthony revealed Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek told him at Tuesday’s practice that his minutes will decrease, so the coach can get a closer look at their six rookies. With the Knicks at 27-43, out of the playoff race and facing the Jazz Wednesday, Anthony said he’s OK with it.

nygiants16 : 3/21/2017 9:29 pm : link
i will take on a bad contract for melo..

I wasn't serious about my idea
giantsfan44ab : 3/21/2017 9:32 pm : link
Its just that the Lakers need to make some decisions pretty soon.

Lots of things are off the table if they don't get their pick this year. They're fucked. You can add Paul George to their current team heading into next year and I don't think they'd make the playoffs. They need Ball/Fultz/Jackson in the worst way.
Less than he is worth
Deej : 3/21/2017 9:39 pm : link
more than the zip that some here think.

Key to the NBA is roles. Guys who are put in the wrong role are in over their head and people say "he sucks". Put that guy in the right role and he's lauded.

That is Melo's issue. He is miscast as a top player on a good team now. He isnt that. Make him the 3rd best player? He's the toast of the league. Smart GMs will recognize that. Smart GMs wont overpay for that though.
He's also an awful fit for a Knicks team with KP at power forward.
manh george : 3/21/2017 10:12 pm : link
Unless and until KP gets strong enough to be a Nowitzki-type center, Melo is an awful fit alongside KP. Melo is no longer just mediocre as a 3 alongside big 4-5s, he's a disaster. He can only be used effectively at the 4 on this team without blowing things up on the defensive end.

There are numerous reasons why the Knicks are awful on the defensive end, but Melo at the 3 is high on the list. Assuming that Hernangomez will grow into the starting 5 alongside KP, there is an urgent need for a fast, young, athletic 3, or the Knicks just won't ever get much better.
hopefully the Knicks get
bc4life : 3/21/2017 10:13 pm : link
super lucky and get Ball in the lottery draft. and then Jackson walks away, and then...Dolan locks himself in a closet.
I won't allow myself to dream of a top three pick.
bceagle05 : 3/21/2017 10:23 pm : link
I'd probably sign for 4 or 5 if it were offered right now. If they're serious about benching Melo and Rose, however, then all bets are off.
Knicks could get more for Lee
giantsfan44ab : 3/21/2017 10:37 pm : link
If they wanted to trade him in the offseason.
really think it will take a player like Ball
bc4life : 3/21/2017 10:45 pm : link
and KP to serve as the cornerstones of a legitimate franchise.

Enough is enough. For God's sakes - we're 1/2 a suck level from being the Cleveland Browns of the NBA.

But if you think about the Knicks in respect to the Nets and the magic, it could still somehow be worse.

Bad reference for a Giants board but I'd equate the Knicks to the eagles. Poor management, but they still got "their guy".
Not to hijack
giantsfan44ab : 3/21/2017 10:53 pm : link
The Melo thread, but the Pelicans have got back on track. Cousins dropped 47 and 17. 7-4 this month (they beat the Grizzlies and rockets) and have been competitive in all of their losses too.

Integrating the Melo chatter, it really sucks Melo has limited destinations.

Not really sure what assets the Pelicans would have or how salaries would even work but you have Melo play the 3 there (or even come off the bench) it would make things interesting.
I can't see how any team doesn't look at adding an aging Melo
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/21/2017 11:09 pm : link
like adding a potentially negative element, unless he's finally considering accepting an off the bench role. I mean, I'd pay to watch him be the 6th man for GS or any Lebron team.

I really think he's closer to a third star than a missing championship piece.

that 2nd round pick gets better for the knicks...

i jist hope melo expands his list, cleveland and the clipperd have zero draft picks
Yep, let's add
bceagle05 : 3/21/2017 11:46 pm : link
Boston, Lakers and Washington at least. If we wind up dealing him for that same Clippers package, I'll be annoyed we didn't just do it at the deadline.

I don't believe it. Melo will retire a Knick, but after he retires he'll still have to suit up and play 30 minutes a night. Then after he dies zombie Melo will still have to be first man off the bench and will eat up a huge chunk of the Knicks cap -- as well as eating the brains of every Knicks GM or President or whoever manages the roster.
Yeah, Melo's been the only guy on the planet lately
bceagle05 : 3/22/2017 12:12 am : link
who still thinks he should stay with the Knicks. I just pray we rebuild properly. We're really not that far away from at least being an exciting young team with upside.

I
DanMetroMan : 3/22/2017 9:51 am : link
think at the end of the day Melo still ends up in Cleveland or LAC for pennies on the dollar. As long as we don't take back long term money (and hopefully get some picks even if it has to be 2021, 2022) I still do it. Time to move on.
With a NTR, Melo can still dictate where he goes.
Section331 : 3/22/2017 9:53 am : link
That limits the market quite a bit. No way in hell LAL gives up Russell for him, and Chris Paul is resigning with LAC, he just rigged the CBA to give FA's like him more money to stay with their teams.

Somehow
Jon in NYC : 3/22/2017 10:01 am : link
this is going to end up being Melo for Austin Rivers and pieces.

I can't see you just changing teams that easily....oh wait.
I know this is an unpopular opinion
nygiants16 : 3/22/2017 10:26 am : link
but i am starting to think i would go fulz or jackson over ball because of his father...

could you imagine him with the new york media? frank and berman would have a field day, you know he would rip the offense and phil every chance he got because his son wouldnt have the ball enough...

kind if feel that is the last thing this organization neefs
If we are stuck with having to
giantsfan44ab : 3/22/2017 10:29 am : link
choose between Fultz, ball and Jackson you will hear no such complaint out of me.
