NFT: Sports Question - incompetent owners

giantfan2000 : 3/22/2017 11:46 am
I look at teams like the Jets , Redskins in football and the Knicks in basketball and it is obvious that the problem is the owners
both are incompetent and do stupid things

my question is

Has any team in any sport every won a championship despite having a truly incompetent owner

I am talking an owner that meddles , makes horrible player and personal decisions , says the wrong things in the press , shoots themselves in the foot if things are going well

what can y ou expect form someone whho would actually call himself
Victor in CT : 3/22/2017 11:50 am : link
"Woody Johnson"? :-)

Only someone born into immense wealth could get away with that.
Only one that comes to mind for me, and it's carryover
jcn56 : 3/22/2017 11:50 am : link
was the championship that Switzer won with the Cowboys after JJ told Johnson to go pound sand.

and yes, an truly incompetent owner did: George Steinbrenner.

Interesting how the building of both Yankees WS championship runs happened while George was suspended from baseball. At least the 2nd time he stayed out of it for the most part when he returned and allowed it to continue. The first time he ruined it.
I didn't consider Steinbrenner because of the suspensions
jcn56 : 3/22/2017 12:06 pm : link
When he was forced to leave the team alone, it prospered. Sort of like what happened when the NFL came in to mediate the feud between the Maras. Take out the meddling child, bring in the responsible adult supervision, ship is righted.

Which makes you wonder if the NBA stepped in and forced Dolan to stay 150 feet away from the Knicks and MSG for a couple of years, if the stink would come off the organization, or if there's too much of it rotten on the inside for it to cleanse that quickly.
Everything about Steinbrenner was complex
Greg from LI : 3/22/2017 12:14 pm : link
In some ways, for certain periods of time, he absolutely was incompetent. In other ways, he was fantastically successful. While his suspension led to the rebirth of the Yankees, he was reinstated in 1993, a full three years before the first title of the dynasty teams. There were innumerable ways he could have fucked it all up had he continued to run the franchise the way he did in his incompetent mid-late '80s way. Whether that was just dumb luck or because he actually did learn a bit from his mistakes, it did happen.

You may not like his style, but he certainly wasn't incompetent. Looking back he is a lot like Trump. Manages with a lot of controversy, not afraid to shake things up (many times), unorthodox and not by any book, but he gets results. There is a management style like this, it keeps everyone on their toes and also creates a lot of change. Rather than stick with someone or a certain philosophy, keep changing until you find something that works.

Oops, meant Dan Gilbert of the Cavs
Charles Finley of the 1970's Oakland A's...
kinard : 3/22/2017 1:19 pm : link
... Steinbrenner "before Steinbrenner". Great teams - won three championships in a row i think in early 1970's
Dan Gilbert strikes me as incompetent (Cavs)
Deej : 3/22/2017 1:34 pm : link
Lost LeBron, took a mean run at LeBron in public, team fell apart and stayed apart, LeBron decided to return home thru no effort of Gilbert, and they've made some very, very questionable personnel decisions since LeBron came back; it just doesnt really matter that much when you have LeBron and SOME talent.

Those are great choices.
Jim Irsay - 2006 Colts

and How about Dan Gilbert - Cavs?

I've also heard nothing but awful things about Tom Benson (Saints - 2008) and Malcolm Glazer (Bucs - 2001), though i suppose being an asshole doesnt necessarily = incompetent.

his results STUNK when left on his own to do as he wished. Gabe Paul built the first championship teams while GS was banned. He left after the title run because he couldn't take it anymore. GS then drove out Al Rosen for the same reason. They had 3 managers in 1982. The endles Billy crap, trading of prospects (Jay Buhner for Ken Phelps, Willie McGee for Bob Sykes just 2 examples), the bullying, scapegoating of good young players (Bobby Meachem) retooling completely (who can forget the Dave Collins Bronx Burners) every year leading to the collapse from 1989-1992. If not for the Howie Spira (another brilliant example of GSs idiocy) suspension I doubt they ever get out of that tailspin.

Credit where due: he left Gene Michael in charge during the suspension, and seemed to learn from prior experience and left him alone to continue the rebuild when he returned.

Finley was not incompetent. A little wacky for sure, but he built that team from shit and they were STACKED. Only free agency kept them from winning ALOT more.
You could've had James Dolan
giantsfan44ab : 3/22/2017 1:56 pm : link
owning Cleveland and it still would've worked out the same.

Lebron joined a team that had 3 #1 picks the year in the span in which he left. If Lebron never left, I can't confidently say he would've had a ring with the teams they were surrounding him with.
Oh... and just last year

This has been posted before but I love the story of Georgia Frontiere and the stolen Lombardi Trophy from Super Bowl V, especially since Ernie Accorsi and George Young are part of it.

don't forget...

...that back in 1999, Team Dolan was pretty close to buying the Jets when they were outbid by Woody Johnson.
Imagine that. James D owning an NFL team. Well, they couldn't have been that much worse than what the team has been lately, right?
Right?

My first thought, but I don't think the Boss was incompetent. He actually had a pretty good eye for talent, but too often went for the shiniest object out there, whether it was a team need or not.

And for all of the talk about the Yankee dynasty being built while he was suspended (which is true), he did win 4 pennants and 2 championships in the 70's-early 80's.

Damn, I can't believe I just defended George Steinbrenner. I must be mellowing with age.
Finley was many things, but he was far from incompetent
Greg from LI : 3/22/2017 3:09 pm : link
His biggest failings were being incredibly cheap and refusing to adapt to the reality of free agency. On the other hand, he was a shrewd judge of talent - part of his cheapness meant that he was pretty much his own one-man front office. He was the man who built the A's dynasty.

Definitely fits the call of the question.

This franchise was an absolute laughing stock for a long time. Welly wasn't just a sweet old man who sat on a collapsible stool on the sidelines during practice.

It's a good thing the Maras asked Rozelle to step in and settle family business, and we got George Young.

Otherwise we could still be in the dark.

decade and a half. And when Well ran just the football side while Jack ran the business, they were quite successful. When Well had to do it all after Jack died is when things got bad.
