NFT: New York Islanders at New York Rangers, 8pm Game Thread

pganut : 3/22/2017 1:06 pm
From the network that brings you the marvel that is Pierre McGuire, Rivalry Night on NBCSN.

Rivalry? Sure. Playoff intensity tonight? Leaning towards not. Isles need to start backing up the talk around understanding the task ahead of them to get to the dance. Rangers looking to stay healthy and keep skills reasonably sharp while fairly locked into WC-1. Bit of a more muted feel here today. Regardless, these games always take a life of their own, so we'll probably get some entertaining hockey.

Isles start Thomas Greiss, Blueshirts counter with Raanta (with Lundqvist expected to get 2 of the next 3 on the WC trip). For the Islanders, we see Dougie is paying attention. Seidenberg sits and is replaced by Thomas Hickey. Same forwards. Note, however, the lines at practice show a different configuration: 16-91-12, 27-72-66 (fun!), 29-18-25, and 86-53-15 are reunited. MiLB and I question the need felt to separate Lee from L1, but Ladd has been on fire; his sniper with size role is different (and not in a bad way) than Lee's netfront monolith role, so maybe these rejiggered lines provide the shot we've needed to get back in (successful) attack mode. Isles need at least 4 points out of the next three games in 4 nights (NYR, then B2B in PIT and home against BOS). I think they have to go 9-2 or 8-3-1 at worst to make it.

AV has noted all F and D will be gametime decisions. Lundqvist, Girardi, Klein, Glass, Kampfer, Pirri and Puempel were all on the ice for the NYR morning skate.

Let's Go Islanders

...and Rangers, feel free to take 'er easy if you want. You've worked hard.

the Isles. They got some bigtime help on the scoreboard last night and need to follow up with a win tonight with @Pit coming on Friday. Meaningless game for NYR but even on the second end of a back-to-back I'm sure they are sick of losing to the Islanders and would love to put a big blow into our playoff hopes.

I'm happy Cappy is sitting Seidenburg, but wish it was for Pulock and not Hickey. Isles were playing great over an extended period of time until the schedule wore them down. They've had 3 nights off in a row. Time to see whether they can rally for a bigtime stretch run. LGI.

Rover, not sure why you're posting on this thread. It never ends well for you.
I think the Rangers win this game tonight.
Mike in Long Beach : 3/22/2017 2:58 pm : link
Don't really have an objective reason. I just think with them being 0-4-2 in their last 6 at the Garden, this is exactly the type of game to reverse that mojo. They'll be a ton of energy in the building as there always is for these games, yet at the same time there'll be no added pressure with the Rangers' playoff positioning set in stone.

Then on the Isles side, Greiss can't stop a beachball these days and the forwards act like they're wearing blindfolds in the defensive zone. The one thing the Isles do well is play sound offensive, 5-on-5 hockey. When you look at how bad the Islander power play is, but then see them top 10 in scoring, it isn't hard to figure out they do play a good offensive game at even strength. It will be absolutely crucial they cash in on those opportunities.

Rangers win 4-3.

People really need to be careful what they wish for with the Beauvillier - Ho-Sang situation. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm not sure what we're all happy about. Both have made some really bad/youthful turnovers lately. And not that anyone's specifically said it, but it's almost as if there's a false narrative floating that there's some sort of chemistry they'd be able to repurpose from the AHL/OHL/QMJHL. To the best of my knowledge they had never played with each other, preseason aside, until Ho-Sang was called up earlier this month.

I'm really afraid we're going of losing what Anders brings to the table with them skating around looking for space that isn't there at this level.

If there isn't any chemistry, Weight can always shuffle the lines during the game.

Lee's game shouldn't be affected, since he can still Park himself in front of the net and collect rebounds. The more Ho-Sang has played, the more he has shown that he isn't afraid to shoot.
Couldn't there be legal implications

I disagree on Lee. With Tavares he was able to bully his way to the front because he often got to battle 1-on-1 while JT drew defenders. With a line of two 20-year-olds with 11 career goals between them, they'll build a wall in front of the crease that even Lee would have a very hard time getting by. He's much, much more valuable when he's not the focal point of a unit.

so sorry to be reiterating all that stuff. I'm just skeptical on these lines. Ladd was doing just fine without Tavares in the last 2 months. I don't despise what's happening but I worry about it. I also know next to nothing about anything, hockey included, so there's hope.

Remains to be seen what cohesiveness is or isn't there with the L2 restructure (which, IMO, I believe is temporary), but for once, we have a situation where we get a glimpse of what we've all clamored for at one time or another, the fact that they're letting kids play and it seems that there's no desire to squelch creativity. It wasn't long ago we decried the dump/chase/grind Capuano system that robbed the team of that creativity and speed. Islanders have been playing more high event hockey - at both ends - and that creates scenarios where our goaltender is left in a bad position. And you're right, the forwards' d-zone play has been shaky, to be expected when they try to leave the zone early to establish numbers. Silly to say that with 11 games left since it should have been done a while ago, but tighten that responsibility up a bit, and for pete's sake, improve on the special teams, and the keel stops wobbling as much.

The experimenting started with the Ho-Sang call-up, and gradually giving him greater responsibilities. Ho-Sang is now on the PP and teaming up with Tavares in OT. The team needs a jump-start, and hoping the new lines do that.

We will agree to disagree here.

that in a (pun intended) nutshell is sidney crosby, and it was accompanied by a .gif showing all three incidents.

LOL.

No idea why, but I find that to be a classic hockey tweet.

I don't care if every one of you (except Rover) hate the guy, in fact the more you hate him with all the sports hate you can muster the better, he can play on my team any day.

In fact I find it somewhat validating of his awesomeness the more people hate him.

And I'm not one of those fans who root for heels or "edgy" players, I hate the ones even on my teams like when Brandon Prust was a Canadien or Dale Wiese, or even Andrew Shaw (though I think his hate is a little overrated) and Alexei Emelin to an extent, but man Crosby just does things on the ice, good and bad, that are jaw dropping.

I love to watch him play.

He does get those cheap shots. If you watch him objectively he gets it as bad as he gives it. What's different about Crosby is the superstars before him didn't get involved in the cheap shots to the extent he does.

Part of the reason he plays this way, IMO, is because the era is different and he doesn't have a personal protector like Gretzky or some of the more finesse players.

I found the nut tap kind of "funny" because I'd get so pissed off whenever anyone ever did that to me (usually (and rarely) defenseman in front of their net would give a subtle nut jab if you weren't moving out of in front of the goalie), my gloves would be off and I'd be throwing hay makers (after the initial jolt of pain wore off) but ROR did nothing. I was shocked, I expected a line brawl.

Which tells me ROR must have done something first.

Lemieux had quick hands and was a surprisingly good fighter, he had no problem also giving back what he got, but as a Rangers fan I don't expect you to be objective.

Watching Adam Graves two-hand Lemieux in the 1992 playoffs and break his hand is one of the biggest cheap shots probably in modern playoff history.

And Graves was one of my favorite players, he too had that edginess to game.

it really is so bizarre. Not just because the games have been completely meaningless, even in terms of seeding... but the bitch is even if you did go on a run to improve your positioning, you almost would be rooting against it anyway.

Very strange.

Oh yeah, I've been actively rooting for OT losses and split back to backs (because we have one every week) for weeks.

Lets take a look at what the East would look like with the old playoff structure:

1. Caps 102
2. Canadiens 91
3. Pens 101
4. Blue Jackets 100
5. Rangers 94
6. Sens 88
7. Bruins 82
8. Leafs 81

In this case, the Rangers are the only team in the Metro that benefits from the playoff structure NOT being this way. Caps are gonna get the 8 anyway but Pittsburgh and Montreal would have significantly easier matchups in the first round. Columbus goes from Pitt to NYR so pretty equal there.

My point here is that even though the current structure gives us a HUGE break as the WC1, it's also made the last two months of the season completely worthless. Who wants to spend 150 dollars to sit in the 200's at the Garden for a game that means nothing?

The reason you hear defense of it by Rangers fans is that's how the game went in those days. Watch most of that game on youtube and you'll see nasty shit all over the ice.

Graves got suspended because his got Mario's in the wrong spot. and it was Mario.

I know it was prevalent, but that's my point, you have some fans (mostly Rangers fans) who say Lemieux dished out cheap shots every game and played dirty, but that's how the league was then and Lemieux being as big as he was, was able to defend himself, even though he had guys who took the bullet for him more often than not.

I was at the Caps Pens playoff game in 1996 or 1997 I forget the year (4 OT game the Pens won, Nedved?) and Lemieux was ejected in the first period for putting an ass-whooping on Todd Krygier like I'd only seen one other time in playoff hockey - Cam Neely dragging Claude Lemieux all over the Boston Garden ice after Neely took a stick to the face while Lemieux turtled the whole time.

Some say they've come too far, some of the ticky tack crap they call is awful, but back then it was the wild wild west.

I get how rivalries are, and I don't expect any different than the responses on here, so don't think I care that much, I just like hockey so much I'll come on here and fight the Crosby battle.

So flame away.

But I seriously do love watching him play. I don't know I've seen someone as good without the puck as Crosby since Gretzky.

and right now hockey has so much young talent it's like a youth movement.

McDavid
Laine
Matthews
Tarasenko
Pastrnak
Werenski
Marner
Forsberg

and more...

just the other day I was reminded that the Capitals traded Filip Forsberg to the Predators for a bag of pucks.

Just be thankful for that or the Capitals could be on the verge of a dynasty.
I have no idea why you take criticism of Crosby's penchant
MetsAreBack : 3/22/2017 5:48 pm : link
to be a cheap-shotting bitch who cries and dives every time he's touched in return...

...with some sort of critique of his game.

He's a Canadian world class generational talent, who's taken a well below market deal to live in fucking Pittsburgh of all places, that never should have gone to Pittsburgh to begin with (no reason to re-hash how Pittsburgh got two number 1 overall picks because of a strike)... and every other team in the league would love to have him on theres.

Obviously.

So I'm just not sure what you're trying to convey here.

I believe it was an Islanders fan who brought it up in the first place, not me.

but I also admit I enjoy the discussion, so unless i get kicked off Islanders threads I'll watch the game tonight and comment as an unbiased observer.

I can tell already the way the thread will go.

Rangers go down a goal, incessant complaining about the refs:

"oh, I guess it's ok for those cunt bags to hit our goalie"

"I guess the refs stopped calling interference"

"how was that not icing"

"too many men is ok for the fish sticks?"

"It's ok for Tavares to score, he'll be a Ranger in 2018"

then Hayes scores a tap in goal on a ridiculous set up from Miller.

"purple haze with the goal"

"FU PJ, you don't know shit, Hayes is awesome"

"great job boys, time to curb stomp these fuckers"

Then there will be some gratuitous Girardi slamming even though he's not in the lineup.

I hope Glass plays because then the lineup conversations get even better.

After the game when the Rangers win there is a creepy ritual where they tell each how great they did.

"nice job B as usual, great work stufftherun, way to go MAB you really brought it today, you too bigbluehoya and Carl, and thank you for not starting the thread Anakim, you suck we can't win when you start the threads. and Fuck you Hudson"

Well the Rangers are clearly a better team, and they thrive on the road this year, so I'd definitely rather not play them as the #2 seed, as opposed to say the Bruins or Maple Leafs.

I don't care if you like Crosby or not, think he's a cunt or not, or have any other opinion of him.

I have my own opinions, and I'm not shy about sharing them (on certain topics), and I accept that people have different opinions.

I actually think they had 5 great looks or so. The Tavares penalties hurt and Nash had a great individual play compounded by poor play by (hickey?) and one greiss should have had. (But Nash was so overdue)

Not sure why Weight didn't think those were penalties on Tavares but I thought his blunt assessment / exacerbation of tonight's game to date was refreshing to hear

I think most coaches could take this roster to 100 points a year or at least the playoffs. I do give him credit for young forwards and in general I like the (regular season) speed with which this team plays.

But the bizarre deference to the veteran crap on this roster, refusal to bench anyone but clendening and Buchnevich for mistakes this year (last night for example Holden was the worst player on either team and vesey is so worn down they might as well put a fork in his back on your RB screen... Yet tonight we play two scrubs for the other guys --- 4th line scores 3 goals in 2 games with Buch in line up be damned!!) ... And apparent disdain to get this team ready past few weeks by practicing playoff, tighter hockey even when for once in ten years you actually have nothing to play for for a month (even the caps are playing for something right now)

We lost this game because guys are still trying stretch passes and pretty plays from the D-zone. This lakers shit doesn't work in the playoffs stop it already.

Comes into the lineup to play 10 minutes, which leads to McD playing over 27 minutes on a back to back with playoff seeding locked up. And he took a beating tonight. Makes no sense.

Anak, everything is not ok. It's a flawed team that probably needs another offseason of tweaks before it's really ready to contend. But I'm just not going to freak out over these two games in particular when they did mostly good things and were done in by the randomness of 3-on-3 last night and some bad puck luck tonight. That's not hockey. Hockey isn't playing Tanner Glass over Pavel Buchnevich because AV thinks we need some grit. Hockey isn't putting Tanner Glass, with one goal on the season, on the ice with 5 minutes to go and down by one. Hockey isn't putting Jesper Fast and his five goals on the season, with two minutes to go.

If this is hockey, this is a poor excuse of hockey. No wins in the last 8 home games. The PK is the worst in the Eastern Conference since New Year's. Losing to two rivals who are clearly inferior to us. AV, during his time here, has made absolutely mind-numbing decisions...and Canucks fans warned us about this too. He has his favorites, he'd rather play veterans than youngsters, he'll overstay his welcome, etc. It's enough.

We're going to make the playoffs, but if we continue to play like this and AV continues to coach like this, we're not going to make it past the first round. But ok, Shattenkirk will fix everything next year., right?..Until AV decides to bench him for Kampfer. Good thing we have a bunch of prospects waiting in the pipeline...oh wait. Well, at least we have draft picks this year...well, at least we have a first rounder this year.

Goals and wins are at a premium for us. The pinball goal is what it is, but we seem to experience that against us a lot so it feels like some evening out. A solid 3rd which are sporadic in frequency for the Isles was great for our side to see. Much needed 2 points.

Leddy hit the inside of the post less than 15 seconds before the power play that led to the pinball goal. It's all fair game.

Huge win. Fuck you, Columbus.

Think its time to focus on the Bruins. Saturday is going to be HUGE. They better show up for that one because the last 2 home games were awful

Mathew Barzal was named WHL Western Conference Player of the Year. Was also named a WHL First Team all-star and is a finalist for WHL Player of the Year.

Barzal had 10 goals and 69 assists for 79 points in 41 games this season. He started the season with the New York Islanders playing two games before returning to the T-Birds. Barzal won a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2017 World Junior Championship.

Some drool-worthy highlights linked below.

Eh....I think last night is a weird game to pick on
Greg from LI : 3/23/2017 8:46 am : link
I am as big a critic as Vigneault has here, but they played a solid game last night. One fluke goal against and a half-dozen open nets missed is why they lost. Of course Clendening should be in over Kampfer. Of course Glass shouldn't be on the roster. Sometimes, though, the fault lies with the guys on the ice.
Did Weight say that Strome would be out for the season?
marbles : 3/23/2017 9:02 am : link
If so, Beauvillier should never sit again, and I would like to see Quine get some games as well.

Nelson really must be put on notice. It is tiresome to watch his looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane routine.

Wow, great stuff, congrats for weathering the storm of love and devotion for the threes. And your Bedouins gave you a nice win. Puck not bouncing well for the Blueshirts during this shoulder season.

I'm with you. The last two goals were very puck luck-ish, especially the first, and Kampfer over Clendening at this point is baffling.

Just add it to the list of numerous baffling decisions by AV. I grew up watching Rangers teams finish in 9th or 10th in the conference every year and didn't have this much disdain for the coaches of those teams as I do for this coach who has brought me a level of success with this team that I have never seen before

Thanks, CHP. It's fun but also melancholy to stand back and watch these amazing kids who were yesterday - seemingly - in diapers becoming strong, smart little people. Enjoying the ride right now, though. Also have some soccer news I'll post in a few you may be interested in.

Grabner for missing wife open net and not finishing on breakaways. Hence why he was a inexpensive pick up. He has no hands. He buries one and maybe rags get a point on a win.
I'm ok with Kampfer and Glass getting some burn in meaningless games
MetsAreBack : 3/23/2017 10:03 am : link
but he should be rotating guys at this point, not making Buchnevich and Clendening the fall guys for everything. Vesey absolutely needs a damn breather. What the fuck.

Especially when the 4th line had chipped in 3 goals in the past two games... why the fuck would you take Buchnevich off the ice?
one bright spot - Brendan Smith's defense
Greg from LI : 3/23/2017 10:05 am : link
He's been pleasantly competent. Not gonna drive offense much, but he's been rock-solid in his own end.
Oh, absolutely
Greg from LI : 3/23/2017 10:07 am : link
I said that two weeks ago - I have no idea why Buchnevich and Vesey are handled so differently. Vesey has been completely unproductive for most of 2017, Buchnevich produces almost every time he's in the lineup, yet Vesey is the one who never ever comes out of the lineup.

Buch must have had some of the dreaded "inefficient touches".

Nothing official yet, but it appears Jaroslav Halak will rejoin the #Isles in Pittsburgh today.
And Holden should have been sat yesterday
MetsAreBack : 3/23/2017 10:09 am : link
for his miserable give-away game in New Jersey.

Clendening (58% Corsi, 57% Fenwick this season) was sent to the press box for far less two weeks prior for 5 games.

But Holden (47% Corsi, 48% Fenwick) can do no wrong - especially when he has 8 goals (due to a 13% shooting percentage versus 6% for his career).

One guy is 29 (no accountability at that age under AV) and the other is 24 and obviously ain't re-signing with us next season. What a waste. I realize Clendening lives somewhat sheltered minutes and assignments so the possession metrics are a little overstated, but cmon... with those possession numbers doesnt he deserve an opportunity in 20 meaningless games down the stretch to see if he can be trusted with playoff minutes?

We aren't winning a cup with Nick Holden logging big minutes for us.
Had a death in the family so was no able to watch the game last night
The 12th Man : 3/23/2017 10:14 am : link
Watched most of it this morning seemed like a fairly even game. Had some puck luck on the 2nd goal. Both teams missed a lot of shots. Overall right now we own this team but they are solidly in the playoffs and we are not. I would trade spots in a second.

Ho-Sang is going to be very special. Every time he steps on the ice you are expecting something good to happen. It is all in front of the Islanders right now. Play Bruins on Sat. and we have a game in hand. They have not really played a start to finish solid game in the last 5 or 6 games. They have 10 playoff games to go before the playofffs. All up to them.

What makes the rags so much better than the islanders where some of you dorks can't understand how it's possible the rangers can lose to the islanders?
well, let's see
Greg from LI : 3/23/2017 11:31 am : link
If you eliminate their head-to-head meetings, the records are:

Rangers 44-24-4
Islanders 31-25-12

That clear it up?

Because I think the Rangers are the better team right now but it hasn't seemed to matter the last 2-3 years. Every time we play the Islanders it's the same game.

I don't think Carolina is better than NYI but they've been kicking your asses a lot recently.

It's just a matchup thing I guess. We've had an inexplicably hard time against the Devils too.

But then we'll go on the road and have no problem beating the Wild.

Exactly. And I dont think we've lost IN chicago in 5 years or something either. And we play the Capitals exceptionally well every year, even the past couple of years when they were winning Presidents Trophy winners.

Yet we can't beat the Islanders, Canadiens (with Price) or Penguins. Matchup issues with their speed, i guess.
Yep I think that's the crux of it

Exactly. So we'd expect the rangers to be somewhere in the vicinity of .500 in head to head games against the Isles and not like 0-for-30 over 3 seasons.

ColHowPepper : 3/23/2017 3:31 pm : link
- someone above made the comment that it might have gone better last night, might go better down the stretch, with Henrik back. It very well might, or might not; but if the comment was meant as an indictment of Raanta's play, I strongly disagree with the premise. The goals he has given up in this stretch of games since King went down have been, almost to a one, quick centering passes across the crease, or centering to a wing dead middle between the circles, with no d-man checking, and a pretty wide open far side (or Tuesday night, underneath Cindy's nuts job, as AR slid across trying to close up the gap). The movement in front of the net by the Rangers' d has sucked, neither moving the forward out, giving a free line of sight, or being quick enough to check quick forwards in front.

- and on that last point, I love Zib, but wtf, he was caught napping on the game winner.

- Clendening, made clear where I stand with him; unfathomable decisions by AV, and it can only be described as personal, not personnel

- if MAB's comments can be construed as inconsistent, so can the Rangers' play night to night. It's like I don't recognize any consistency game to game. Part of it is the line switching, part of it is lack of focus and will in this stretch of end-of-season schedule wilderness, but it's a really shitty mode in which to be approaching SCP. God forbid AV welcomes DG back to the zoo when he's "ready".

- this kid Beauvillier (sp.?) can really skate

- that was a prime time riff by pj, hilarious and spot on

- 12th Man, I know you are doing her life and memory proud
First time yes

...the Islanders are worse than the Rangers.

It's a strange dichotomy for me with AV. I like his system. I hate his roster management. Gorton is failing as a GM where it counts, filling the gaps in his coaches armor. Long term I'm losing faith this marriage will produce a Cup.

Wait, wut ? LOL. Probably. AV frustrates me. Good coach, can't argue with this year's overall results to date, but lousy with personnel decisions and i dont have confidence he's going to put the best lineup forward come playoff time.
