NFT: Transcendental Meditation - Anyone here practice TM?

Bchurch : 3/22/2017 3:41 pm
My wife and I are dealing with some things in our life that will be creating stress for the unforeseeable future. I am looking for ways to better manage our stress levels and find some inner peace.

I know of some celebrities who are part of TM (Jerry Seinfeld, Howard Stern etc..) which lends some credibility but there are also others who call it a cult.

I Would love to get some honest feedback and information from the folks here as well as understand if it really necessary to work with a trained TM teacher or can you teach yourself?
Lots of great

Guided meditations on YouTube. You don't need a teacher.
I did TM when I was younger.

I found that "mindfulness meditation" was at least as useful (actually, the two are very similar -- TM gives you a mantra to repeat as a focus point, while mindfulness mediation offers any number of possible focal points (e.g., your breathing).

I feel it's helpful to have a few sessions with a trainer, but even without that you can learn it, as Phil says. There are 100s of guided meditations on youtube.
Yes back in my Hippy dippy days in the early 70's

It really works. I thought it was going to be a sham but it proved me wrong. I still use TM from time to time.
There are apps; there are videos.

I find that when things get rough at work, I can literally go to my car in the garage for fifteen minutes, do deep breathing/mediation/whatever, and come back ready to go. Can't hurt; might help.

Do you actually live a better life when you're meditating?
I read Marareshi Yogi's book....

found it extremely relaxing, weirdly so.

Then I tried TM, it didn't work as well
My problem with mindfulness....

Its really a less-than-subtle way of dissing those who don't practice. We aren't mindful? Are we mindless? Probe these guys and that's basically what they are saying
Yes, I have, and many other types of meditation.

Over time I've gravitated toward Mindfulness Meditation, and I also teach it. Try different styles and see what works best for you.

A good place to start would be a local yoga studio, they often offer meditation classes.

Good luck!

Just read this article. 20 benefits of mindfulness meditation.

the only issue with TM specifically

is that they want to charge you for instruction. I believe it's over $1500.

Try your own methods first. Good luck with your stresses. Identifying that you have it and trying to tackle it are the keys to not letting it get to you.

TM has a course for levitation, emm i don't think thats going to work
I learned TM in 1974 and have been practicing it every day since then.

It's very different from other forms of meditation which require contemplation or concentration, and thereby keep the mind on a superficial level. You can't learn TM without an instructor. It's an interactive process. The cost is just under $1,000 for an adult, but couples learning together and students get significant discounts.
Neither TM nor mindfulness will hurt

I would not pay more than the download of an APP for it though. There is also regular old prayer which has the same impact.
Wife was watching Ellen

and this guy came on, used to be a monk, and he created a meditation app. It's called Headspace. Honestly don't know shit about it, I usually read my book while she watches but always catch a glimpse of who/what is going on in the show.
