NFT: Anyone try Direct TV NOW?

26.2 : 3/22/2017 5:18 pm
The web streaming service from them? Basically their version of Sling. They are running a promotion that if you pre pay for 3 months of service (about $100), you get a free Apple TV.

I have Comcast and while I don't hate their service, I hate thier prices, so I thought it would be a good way to give DTV a whirl and pick up a new ATV for my effort.

I've not tried playstation Vue, but have heard good things. I have tried Sling, but didn't come away ready to cut the cord. Although I only used it for their free trial for one week and didn't really use it all that much.

Main problem is that my GF loves the DVR and she's not really good at adapting to changes in technology.
the new apple tv

is great, I tried it out simply to get the new apple tv.

Let my friend use it, I had no real use for the actual subscription. He said it was choppy at times even with a strong internet connection. But seemed to get better as the weeks went on.
I tried it

There is also a code out there to get it free for 30 Days. Only gripe I had was no local channels. The ability to pause but not rewind. And they have moments when the TV guide doesn't work. I also didn't like that if you're a person that likes to leave the TV on when you leave the house, to discourage burglars, it will cut off after about an hour. This drove me nuts.
I read up on this a little
bigblue12 : 3/22/2017 5:32 pm : link
and read that PlayStation Vue had more channels. I did a free trial for 7 days and it was pretty good and had local channels.
Is this a work around for NFL ticket?
MotownGIANTS : 3/22/2017 5:35 pm : link
?
Can you get Sunday Ticket at a discounted rate if you have DirecTV NOW
NYG27 : 3/22/2017 5:36 pm : link
If you can, then I'd be interested in trying them. I'm sure they'll have some sore of promotion closer to the season.

You don't need a PS at all. I think its on ATV and maybe Roku.
My brother has it DTV NOW
Gatorade Dunk : 3/22/2017 6:02 pm : link
I think it sucks. On top of all the issues detailed above, it's also consistently 60-90 seconds behind my Fios broadcasts. It makes talking to him during any sporting event impossible unless I pause my TV for a minute first.

It is better on PS systems, because you can watch whats on the screen, and go through the guide at the sametime. On Roku, you have to go to the channel selection and get off the show. It was the one thing I didn't like about it.
I tried all the streaming TV options
CaLLaHaN : 3/22/2017 6:23 pm : link
I use the FireTV and the best IMO was PlayStation VUE. Sling and DTN had so many buffering issues while PS Vue had no problems at all. PS Vue had the most channels aswell last time I checked.

March Madness has been crystal smooth no buffering no services problems that I have ran into yet into about a month of service.

All three (Sling, DTN, PSVUE) had one week free trials that let me use them all and play around and get used to there set ups first. I'm pretty sure they still offer that. Best way to figure out on your own without going all in for a month.

It does take a while getting used to how these streaming services are set up and there layouts are very different from one anither but its totally worth cutting the cord. I used to pay around $220 a month for TV, Phone, Internet. Now we are only paying $60 for internet and $40 for the PlayStation Vue package.

tried them all, settled on playstation vue, then...

called DirecTV to ask for a shipping box to return our receiver/DVR (I'd already installed an amplified antenna for locals).

Well, sir, this most agreeable agent in Tucson gushed about how long I'd been with them and so forth. Then...

She offered our Choice package for $72 reducing to $64 after 12 months -- plus free Sunday Ticket Max for 2017 and free movie channels (HBO, SHO, Cinemax, Starz) for 3 months.

Too hard to resist.

BTW, they installed brand new equipment the same day!

I have PS Vue

I run it on a Fire TV in one room and Fire stick in the other. Use HDTV antenna for locals. I can get YES network for Yankee games through Fox Sports Go, which you get with PS Vue. Only issue is trying to watch Knicks games, although that's been a good thing lately.

Not being able to rewind would be a killer for me. I realize how much I use it every time I stay in a hotel
I have it

Good -- Apple TV is great worth the price of getting directtvnow for 3 months
channel selection is decent if you live in NYC
you get NBC ABC FOX
haven't had any streaming problems

Bad
Interface kind of sucks..
the on demand stuff is not great selection
there was suppose to be 72 hour rewind but it has NEVER WORKED and now they pulled it to release at a later date .

some channels you get on streaming but not on Demand or app versions -- worse is TCM .. TCM is useless if you don't have on demand version as well

NBC in NYC works on iPad /iphone but not Apple TV?????
no CBS yet..

definitely worth trying for free Apple TV..

Not having a DVR is an issue for me
NYG27 : 3/23/2017 3:56 pm : link
If one of these services (AppleTV, Roku, DirecTV Now, Sling or Playstation) will allow me to plug in an external hard drive and use it as a DVR, then I'm ALL IN for cord cutting.

Until then, hard to see my family doing so since we never watch anything on Live TV anymore and always record what we want on the DVR to watch later.
PlayOn and PlayLater
NYG27 : 3/23/2017 3:58 pm : link
These are services I signed up with that allows you to record streaming content to a hard drive to watch later but not a fan of their services....yet. I still feel we are 3-5 years away from having a really good working DVR capable of recording streaming content properly.
