OSU Pro Day: What's the deal with LB McMillan and RB Samuel?

adamg : 3/23/2017 6:17 pm
Both these guys seem to have mixed reviews.

I've seen McMillan as a top ranked LB for a while, but I haven't read a report on him that's very favorable. I've read there's a lot of holes in his game and that he won't be an impact player in the pros. What say BBI about him? Is he worth a early/mid round pick? How good is he?

Also, RB/WR Curtis Samuel might be available around our second pick. Is he a good alternative to McCaffrey as a utility back who can line up anywhere? I've seen reports that he's too scattered in his toolset and he's good at a lot of things but not great at anything and so he won't translate well. I'm not sure how much to buy in on that take though. Is he worth a early/mid round pick? Can he be a playmaker in our offense?
Also should note

Our VP Marc Ross is at this pro day.
I've never been that impressed with Samuel.

.
My buddy had Samuel as a student in Brooklyn.

He loves the kid. He said he is a great respectful kid. The thing with Samuel is that I see him going before our second pick. If he went to NE he'd be a pro-bowl player. I think he needs to land in the right situation to flourish.
Any thoughts on McMillan?

He's a curiosity of mine since the LBer might be the one of the weaker defensive groupings in the draft. But, he might well be there for our 2nd rounder...

Not great in pass coverage. Looks like a two down MLB.

Is a two down guy. He's not very good in coverage. He's a decent Blitzer. Probably a 2nd round pick.

I like Curtis Samuel a lot. He reminds me of Percy Harvin. Just doesn't have the injury & off field problems that Harvin had. He can play in the slot & out of the backfield. He'd be an awesome weapon to have. Very underutilized by Meyer IMO. Averaged 7.9 yards per carry last year. Somehow he only had 97 carries. That's ridiculous. He had 1636 yards from scrimmage and 15 TDs last year. He only had 170 total touches. So he averaged nearly 10 yards per touch. Depends on who is there in the 2nd, but he's a guy I'd strongly consider. Has very little mileage on his body. Only 279 career touches in 3 seasons at Ohio State.

He's just a weapon that can line up basically anywhere and make plays. An offense with Eli, Odell, Marshall, Shepard, Perkins & Samuel would be terrifying for opposing defenses. If you want double Odell. That leaves Marshall, Perkins, Shepard & Samuel in single coverage or you can double Marshall. Leave Odell, Shepard, Perkins & Samuel in single coverage. Add a TE and it could potentially be a top 5 offense. My first 3 rounds would look something like this

1. Cunningham/Reddick/Bolles
2. Samuel
3. Jake Butt
Butt in rd 4

I think he drops due to healthy players who will be ready for the season. I like him in rd 4 for us.
Very familiar with each

Robbie's statement on Samuel's character is accurate and I can say the same for Raekwon. Just two really great guys who represented the university exceptionally well from the moment they showed up.

The thing with Raekwon is he's a true MIKE, and that's just not a position we typically see first round picks used on. There are some overall athleticism questions, can he successfully cover TEs and RBs or is he more of a two down guy? I think he can at least be serviceable in that area and combined with his strong play against the run, think he'll be a solid starter. Can contribute early on too. Would be fine if he was our 2nd round pick.

Would have liked to see Samuel come back to school and develop more as a WR. He was criminally underused until this past season when he really had one of the more unique overall seasons for an OSU skill player in recent memory. He was better than Braxton Miller the season before but Braxton got priority (if Braxton was a 3rd rounder, Samuel is at least that). He's a truly explosive athlete. Legit speed and burst, twitchy with make miss ability. But he needs to refine his game with the technicalities at WR. He's a unique talent but he's got to find the right spot that can use and develop him properly. I don't believe that's our team. Creativity is not the strong suit of this Giants offense
Rick, yep

279 touches for his career is far too few and really a waste of one of the better talents Urban has had. His 2016 season was fantastic and they still probably didn't use him enough.

I'm a big fan, just not sure he's a fit for us. But I'd rather use a 2nd or 3rd on him than a 1st on Mccaffery
These guys are excellent

McMillan is a better, more athletic version of Antonio Pierce. Samuel will play like the Hill on KC except he can withstand more punishment. Running from RB. Wingback reverses . Bubble screens . Games turn on plays like those. Oh, McMillan is a three-down backer. On the Giants he would probably be a 2-down backer, at least early in his career. But both players could help the Giants immensely .
Did Samuel run the 40 at his Pro Day?
