NFT: Yankee Fans - Luis Torrens

davek3698 : 3/24/2017 9:22 am
As of a few days ago he was hitting just 3-for-24 with a double, three walks and eight strikeouts in 14 appearances. Hopefully he comes back.
Ok

Have fun in the minors. Work out your issues.
I hope so too.

He's with SD He was drafted during the Major League portion of the draft meaning either SD keeps him the whole year or offers him back.I think the OP was pointing out his stats in ST aren't great so SD might offer him back. As a Yankee fan, that would be great. Last year he was coming off missing an entire year the season before due to surgery. He was one of the top prospects before that. It was because of the surgery he wan't on the 40 man. Let's hope SD doesn't keep him!
Not sure why the Padres grabbed Torrens
GiantJake : 3/24/2017 11:28 am : link
He is definitely an interesting prospect, but he hasn't played a single game above Low A ball. It shows that the Padres think he can be special and they gambled that he would take a big leap this spring. Bottom line is that Torrens is 20 years old and lost a whole year with an injury. I can't see him being ready for a role at the MLB level. It's true that this is the Padres we are talking about and they could carry a developmental player all season if they really wanted to. It could work out great if Torrens returns to the Yanks. He would benefit from the experience and be ready to start the season at High A Tampa. The Yanks would then have the option of adding him to the 40 man roster next season and he will be back on the prospect track.
I don't think it'll matter
Giantsfan79 : 3/24/2017 11:28 am : link
even if he comes back to the Yankees this year because he was selected in the first place the Yankees will have to either put him on the 40 man roster or he can elect free agency. If the Yankee's depth at catching, and our overwhelming depth, it may be hard to keep him.

Catching is one area where the Yankees do not have the kind of depth, particularly in younger C's,that tey have at other positions.

To be fair, that's because they've 'graduated' two C's recently in Sanchez and Romine. Higashioka was/is a decent prospect as well.
Yanks definitely

need more catchers. Even if Luis is not returned they need to hit it in the draft and IFA again this year.

They hit it hard the last couple years, with Saul Torres and Jason Lopez. But yeah, they need to get some more into the pipeline, it's really the only position without MLB caliber prospects in the lower minors.
who was the kid in the low minors they were converting to catcher?
Greg from LI : 3/24/2017 1:14 pm : link
He is supposed to be a decent prospect, isn't he?
Isn't
mitch300 : 3/24/2017 1:31 pm : link
Catcher the one position we shouldn't have to worry about for the next 6+ years.
Donny Sands

is being converted. He could be a JR Murphy type.

It's a high value position, ala shortstop. Always good to have depth there, even with a young star at the position.
How about Miguel Flame? Not a catcher any more?

If Torrens' shoulder holds up, have to try to keep him. He was highly regarded.

I believe his is playing 1B, maybe some OF. Not catching anymore.
Cessa got assigned to AAA

per RAB, so that's one man down on potential 4/5 starters, a few more to go. I think Severino threw 3 scoreless today, fwiw.

McKinney and Frazier down too. Nice camps for both of them, really turned some heads.
i've read in a couple of places

that Sands may have some potential. I'd love Torrens back even if it is just for the year. You never know what can change in a year.
Sands is interesting...
Dunedin81 : 3/25/2017 9:21 am : link
He is bilingual (Mom is Mexican), great makeup, solid contact tool. But he's not a budding star. There's a difference between the sort of kid who, if all breaks right, will see the bigs and the guy who, if all breaks right, will be a perennial All Star. The likelihood that all breaks right for Dermis Garcia and his 80 power is much smaller than that of Sands becoming a major leaguers, but as deep as things are right now it's nice to have plenty in both categories.
