Sounds like TDA
Metnut : 3/25/2017 10:59 am : link
is throwing better today. Threw a guy out (albeit on a pitchout) and had another throw that was right on but dropped by the infielder.

Interesting (and unfortunate) to hear about Thor Shecky. I guess it's like you said, Mets and Thor can just keep on working on it and hope to minimize the pain.
TDA threw out
Metnut : 3/25/2017 11:29 am : link
two more runners who were trying to steal. Up to 3 on the day now.
4 for 6

Is it a problem with throwing to first? He seemed to be fine with that from what I saw. An attention span thing? Whatever it is, I just hate seeing Thor give up a single and it automatically turns into a triple.

But you are right, if it can't be helped then just focus on other stuff.

He's just slow, I don't see that changing.
Shecky's Plawecki
ZGiants98 : 3/25/2017 1:08 pm : link
Bias is showing. Lol. TDA was above average throwing out runner's in 2015 (before his shoulder issues in 2016)
Supposedly

DeGrom hit 100 mph on the gun this morning.
Lagares triple
ZGiants98 : 3/25/2017 1:13 pm : link
followed by a Conforto blast to start the "B Mets" off against Dickey and the Braves in the first.
Really?

Credits the offseason throwing program with Warthen. Been hitting 97-ish since his first spring training game. This is after showing up and barely hitting 90 mph last spring. Crazy.
The more I watch Montero this spring
ZGiants98 : 3/25/2017 1:22 pm : link
The more I think he has indeed improved. Not thrilled with the walks but....
Glad to hear that TdA was able to throw out some runners today
PhiPsi125 : 3/25/2017 1:25 pm : link
Yes, TdA was about middle of the pack (average) in throwing out runners in 2015. However, TdA was awful in 2016, 2014 and 2013. Bottom of the barrel if he were to be measured against qualified catchers. Maybe 2015 was the outlier?

I'm sure that Noah being slow the plate is going to be a built-in excuse for TdA's throwing woes, but you cannot escape the stats. And the stats say that he's bad. I hope he can improve and get some more zip on his throws.

As for Thor, I wouldn't change his windup to make it quicker. But I would have him throw over to first a thousand times so these runners aren't so comfortable.
Yeah... Nothing we can do but hope for the best...
ZGiants98 : 3/25/2017 1:28 pm : link
If TDA hits and keeps up his excellent pitch framing I'm going to be thrilled. As I outlined above the best catcher in baseball in throwing out runners saved his team a whopping 2 runs over 162 games. The worst gave up -2 run. You can keep the 2-4 runs. It's such a useless stat.

I agree is probably not the biggest deal. I just fear that it takes on a life of its own (like last year) where people just run at-will on TdA. And especially during Thor starts (not that he will be catching a lot - and that has more to do with Thor). Probably an overreaction but it is what it is.
Yeah and dont get me wrong
ZGiants98 : 3/25/2017 1:34 pm : link
I obviously would rather him be better at it than not.
Really glad none of our hitters
ZGiants98 : 3/25/2017 1:36 pm : link
are in the lineup today against Dickey lol. Sucks this guy is going to be in our division this year.
Supposed to say
ZGiants98 : 3/25/2017 1:39 pm : link
"starting hitters" lol
Something not talked about a lot....
ZGiants98 : 3/25/2017 1:41 pm : link
If Conforto stays in Vegas for roughly 43ish games the Mets gain another year of control. Boras will sure to be bringing it up in season.
The worst thing that can happen
Shecky : 3/25/2017 1:59 pm : link
Is that people run at will against TDA and it gets in his head. Because once something gets in his head, it's over...
Montero 4 shutout innings against Braves starters

Juan Lagares, who just tripled and scored, is batting a cool .300 with two homers and that three-base hit in his last nine games. #Mets
Montero with a single now too!

Was interested to see if Rafael Montero would pound the strike zone even against big league hitters. Hes done that.
Legares
Shecky : 3/25/2017 2:09 pm : link
He's been hitting screaming line drives all spring.

First Nimmo. Now possibly Legares. Conforto desperately trying to keep his ML spot lol

Those damn oblique injuries seem to last at least a couple of weeks. Ugh.
Montero looks great today

Not a lot of Ks but pounding the strikezone and getting a ton of weak contact.

Yeah, he has to unless Nimmo or Lagares magically make it back in time. No other option.
Lagares
DanMetroMan : 3/25/2017 2:29 pm : link
most likely will miss at least a month.
Won't speculate
Shecky : 3/25/2017 2:34 pm : link
But I think Legares was more "precautionary" than an "oh shit". But then again, how often does day-to-day turn into a month for the Mets?
I dont think Sandy is going to want to add too many 40 man spots
ZGiants98 : 3/25/2017 2:35 pm : link
Montero might be a lock for the long man spot at this point. 1.96 ERA this spring. Sewald likely goes to Vegas.

What is up with the Familia suspension? WBC is no longer an excuse.
Biggest remaining question for me is if
ZGiants98 : 3/25/2017 2:38 pm : link
Harvey stays in extended or heads north with the team. Guess his next start will be telling. If he goes north Lugo goes to Vegas I presume.

Can't announce it IMMEDIATELY after. That would make it look like MLB waited till after the Classic to announce it lol

We can always drop Gilmartin from the 40 man if we don't want to immediately put Wright on the 60 day DL for roster flexibility purposes. Besides Sewald, is there anybody else that is not already on the 40 man who really must be kept? Even Ty Kelly or Phillip Evans duplicate what T.J. Rivera provides and Rivera is already on the 40 man

I dont think Sandy wants to max out every possible 40 man spot. Sure, Goeddel and Gilmartin can be removed but there isn't a lot of room past them. Sure I think Sewald could be added but if it's close I think the tie obviously goes to the man with the 40 man spot and Montero is having a pretty good spring. I do think Ty Kelly is added. TJ Rivera and Flores look like the backup middle infielders until Wright comes back (Reynolds already sent to minor league camp). Lagares and Ty Kelly looked like the backup OF. If Lagares is down long term than Conforto replaces Lagares. Ty Kelly still makes the team.

LOL. What a bunch of bullshit.
Goeddel
DanMetroMan : 3/25/2017 2:56 pm : link
topped off at 87 this spring, he can be removed as well
Every vet starter on the Mets is on a one year deal except Cespedes
ZGiants98 : 3/25/2017 2:59 pm : link
Every single one of them. Reyes, Duda, Walker, Cabrera (yes he does have an option), Granderson, and Bruce.

There might be some major turnover next year. Guys like Nimmo, Conforto, Cecchini, Rosario, Smith, and I'd even say TJ Rivera need to be getting plenty of consistent at-bats in preparation of getting their numbers called in the not so distant future.
Mac saying it was hard for Lagares to even sit in the locker room.

IMO. If Familia doesn't get suspended I'd actually think Smoker might once again have a hard time making the team due to options.

18.1 IP, 14 H, 4 ER (1.96 ERA), 8 BB/21 K

He saying it doesnt feel as bad as a time he injured it that was already lower than the 30 games you predicted. Im not going to speculate on "how bad" or what the heck he talking about lol. We have no idea at this point.
Smoker once again have a hard time making the team due to options...
Torrag : 3/25/2017 3:25 pm : link
I'd feel bad for the guy. He's waited a long time and pushed through a lot of obstacles to play in the majors. Plus I'd like to see him in action.

The upside of Smoker is so much higher than a guy like Edgin but Edgin is pitching well now and is seemingly a decent backup LOOGY. Doubt the Mets discard him so he's holding the cards right now. The Familia suspension is holding everything up. Ive seen speculation he might not even get suspended at all or that its at least less than 30. We'll see! Smoker still has a shot though.
If I had to guess
Shecky : 3/25/2017 3:32 pm : link
Smoker makes it.
Nowhere did I predict he would

Indians, Jose Ramirez, pending physical, agree to 4-year $26 million extension. Deal includes club options for 2022 and 2023.
Smoker and Sewald both deserve to be in the pen IMO
ZGiants98 : 3/25/2017 3:38 pm : link
but there arent enough spots. Sewald has almost no shot now IMO.

No Familia Suspension...

Familia
Reed
Salas
Blevins
Robles
Edgin

One of Montero, Smoker, or Lugo for last spot

Famila suspension...

Reed
Salas
Blevins
Robles
Edgin

Two of Smoker, Lugo, Montero, possibly Sewald (since a 40 man spot is open for Familia)
Wish the Mets would do this more often
Torrag : 3/25/2017 3:40 pm : link
Understood and agree. But the Indians need to strike proactively in an attempt to regulate team finances long term. IF the Mets continue the trend of increasing payroll and behaving like the money machine big market franchise they are it's not as big deal for us. IF.
