Not that excited for this years draft

Mark from Jersey : 3/24/2017 10:11 pm
I don't know if its because its defense heavy and OL weak but I cant get into this years draft.

Best RB class in years but not in love with any of them (with the exception of Fornette).

Deep TE class but not in love with any of them.

I know we have holes on the OL but I'm not against going D, D, D rounds 1, 2 & 3. Get a world class defense and hope the changes we make on the OL (FA, later rounds, other FAs still out there) hold up.
Its a good on the edge

and the boundaries on defense.

There is alot of speed on defense in this draft. If we have a shot a Charleton, Njoku, or McCaffrey.. I'd say that is pretty exciting.

Watch some of these guys on Youtube and that may do something for you.
Good post

I agree with you on this. If we play to the strength of this draft and go heavy on D in the first few rounds we could arguably have a Ravens of 2000 type defense. The difference is we have guys like Eli and Beckham on offense compared to Dilfer. The offensive line needs some help but maybe we can draft a mid round guy and luck into a veteran FA being let go in the summer to patch things up.

I like McCaffrey and obviously his dad who should have been here a lot longer, but what concerns me when watching his highlights vs James Conner as an example, while they are much different players, is that McCaffrey always seems to be running through a huge lane due to having s good line, poor competition etc where a guy like Conner is fighting through tacklers which we can definitely expect with our line and really the NFL in general. It's not McCaffreys fault but it's hard to judge how well he will do with little space to run through since we don't really have anything to go off of in his college tapes. I guess I feel like we need a power guy more than a finesse back at this point, it seems like Perkins can fill that void.
I don't follow CFB, but if the talent in the draft is the way
jcn56 : 3/24/2017 10:33 pm : link
they've pitched it, I'm pumped.

Sounds like it's low on superstars but deep on solid talent. While I'd never turn down a playmaker, this team would greatly benefit from 2-3 solid if unspectacular players. A couple of role players to help push some bottom of the roster guys off (change of pace back to offset Perkins, CB to take Wade/Sensabaugh's place, another DE to the rotation, etc.).

This could be a great draft.
Yeah, I've change my mind, too
George : 3/24/2017 10:50 pm : link
Up until about two weeks ago, I was leaning heavily on an offensive draft, but now I'm thinking a defensive emphasis early on would give us a truly sick unit in 2017 and beyond.

That'd be fun to watch for a change.

Go back and look at the scores of the Ravens games that year. The Ravens offense was putting more points on the board than we did last year.

They averaged less than two points more per game and that amazing D gave them fantastic field position constantly.
I'm excited...

I look at the edge rushers and CB prospects that everyone says the draft is deep in and I'm not all that impressed once you get past the top ten and the Giants aren't drafting in the top ten.

Meanwhile I look at the OL and I see interesting prospects in each round. The idea that Cam Robinson may still be available with the 23rd pick is crazy. Is it true or just a media mistake? Won't know until the draft day. And if not Robinson, Ramczyk is another OL prospect I like. Not as enamored with Bolles and Lamp, but I wouldn't complain. McCaffrey is a pipe dream, but you never know.
Two more important things about the 2000 Ravens:
Optimus-NY : 3/25/2017 4:11 am : link
1 - They could run the ball when they wanted to. They had a good O-Line, highlighted by Hall of Famer Jonathan Ogden, and a fine RB in then-rookie Jamal Lewis.

2 - They had outstanding all-around Special Teams. Jermaine Lewis was a deadly Returner to boot.

The NYG, as currently constituted, don't have either of those two things.
BPA as they always do.....
George from PA : 3/25/2017 4:45 am : link
The first round can be anything from OT to TE, DE, LB, and corner......Evens a QB. A WR would be only surprise.

After 1st round.....Then the deep talent starts to provide BPA........The 6th TE or 4th RB will still be studs
A strong draft
grizz299 : 3/25/2017 12:08 pm : link
after the top five....Means it's s a good year to be drafting 23rd. And I expect a great player no matter which way they go.
I'm excited
Glover : 3/25/2017 12:33 pm : link
They could go OL, TE, LB, RB, S, WR, even QB first round, and with the possible picks at those positions, I'm excited. Who really knows who's a sure thing in the NFL draft? Top 5 players struggle, and late rounders shine. Happens all the time. I'm excited to see Reese & co, have another strong draft and hopefully show he can be more consistent evaluating college players. Giants are pretty solid as is. Added competition at any of those positions aside from QB will improve the team.
I know it's that time of year, when optimism springs eternal, but
Devon : 3/25/2017 12:41 pm : link
the 2017 Giants are not going to have a defense that gets mentioned among the GOATs. It should be good, it may be great for the current NFL, but comparisons to that Ravens team or its ilk are looking for something that just isn't coming,
I'm very excited
Torrag : 3/25/2017 12:42 pm : link
DB, TE, RB, DE all deep classes in this draft and we have needs at all of them. We should materially improve our roster if our scouts don't shit the bed.

And? That means absolutely squat in 2017.
And what?
Devon : 3/25/2017 12:49 pm : link
I was responding to how above someone is thinking the defense could be comparable to that Ravens squad.

It's not and that's fine, but it's ridiculous to even say it. Washington fan like, even.
And the 2000 Ravens
djm : 3/25/2017 1:49 pm : link
HAd an average at best qb, which is being kind. They didn't have much at wr either but they had a great TE. Apples and oranges but I wouldn't call the Ravens offense surpremely talented. Good rb very good OL very good TE.
Anyone know if
mrvax : 3/25/2017 2:22 pm : link
one of the young cornerbacks can play as the slot CB?
Adoree' Jackson
allstarjim : 3/25/2017 3:06 pm : link
May be a consideration in the 2nd. I also really like Cordrea Tankersly... not sure he lasts to 55 and he shouldn't be the pick at #23 but keep an eye on him. I'm a fan.
If they approach this draft properly, the Giants might come out of it
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/25/2017 3:17 pm : link
set at CB for the next 5 years.
I'm always excited for the draft.
Klaatu : 3/25/2017 3:38 pm : link
I hope the Giants come out of this one with an upgrade or two at the offensive skill positions - WR, TE, RB - and at least one good OL prospect.

For the defense, another edge rusher wouldn't hurt (although I'm hoping that will be in the form of an OLB instead of a DE), and since it's a deep class for CBs and Safeties, I can see the Giants grabbing one (or both). DT? Why not, regardless of what happens with Hankins. If the talent is there, I say go for it.

I know I won't get everything on my wish list, but if JR & Co. make the right moves, the Giants should emerge from draft weekend a lot stronger than they are now.
How can you not be excited?
UConn4523 : 3/25/2017 3:49 pm : link
we are arguably 1 impact player away from being a legit contender. If there's any draft to care about it's this one.
I do not
TommyWiseau : 3/25/2017 4:22 pm : link
like Taco Charlton at all, I'd much rather go with Reddick, McCaffrey, Cam Robinson, Njoku over him. He does not impress me at all

Yeah, I just don't get where the OP is coming from. I don't have to be "in love" with any RB or TE (or WR) to recognize that the addition of a talented kid at even one of those positions would do wonders for our offense.

And what's so bad about going defense-heavy, if that's what's there when we're up? Is there anything wrong with making a strength even stronger? I don't think so.

Torrag : 3/25/2017 4:28 pm : link
Nice list but I doubt the Giants would draft Robinson for reasons expressed in several other posts.

Question about Mcaffrey is can he be a starting tailback? Tote the rock on 1st and 2nd down for you if you need him to? If he can't is he really worth such a high pick for us when we have Sheppard in the slot already and Vereen at 3rd down back? Tough call.
People see Cam Robinsing falling anywhere near 23?
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/25/2017 4:28 pm : link

Huddle report which is fairly consistent over the years...
Torrag : 3/25/2017 4:35 pm : link
...has Cam at #22 on their prospect value board. But imo certain franchises with high character requirements especially in the premium rounds will have downgraded him. This happens every draft season with BBIers clamoring for a player based on game tape alone and it never materializes because they discount the total picture. The Giants do a full profile on a player and take their research seriously into account.

Who knows? Of the six mock drafts at CBS, four have Robinson going to Seattle at #26, and two don't even have him in the 1st round.

At NFL.com, Brooks has him going to the Raiders at #24, Reuter has him going to the Ravens at #16, and Jeremiah has him going to the Broncos at #20.

So, again, who knows? Stranger things have happened.
Strange premise in the original post

How can you not be excited at the potential of adding 7 new players to the team through the draft plus the x factor of adding a slew of UDFAs

This draft is loaded with defensive talent and TEs
The Giants defense has become something to got excited about
2 or 3 solid pieces added could push that excitement higher

If you cant get on board for that, you are missing the boat.
Me - i'm salvating. Just look at a guy like Chris Wormley - add him to the De Front. It would be like adding a heat seeking missle to the defense.

I use him illustratively - i've viewed highlights of 40 or 50 players in the draft now that would excite me if they were ny giants

Go Giants. Im ready baby!

I'm not sure what prospects you are referring to when you see that every year BBIers clamor for a player based on game tape alone without seeing the whole picture. And it's possible that their research tells them that character is not an issue with Robinson. We have no idea who interviewed well and who didn't, who got high marks for character and who got low marks?
