but I'm guessing he feels like a backup plan as I'm fairly sure they were going hard after Alford but were told No after UCLA's season ended yesterday.
Yes, UCLA is a better job, but it is far less secure than Indiana. He'll be fired in a couple years. No one lasts at UCLA these days, he was almost out after last year.
At Indiana especially considering he's one of their own they would give him plenty of time.

Wasn't as good a coaching prospect as Sean was coming out of Xavier. Per KenPom, Sean's last 3 Xavier teams were better than any of Archie's 6 Dayton teams.

Fair, but Archie raised the level of the Dayton program, whereas Xavier remains a step above and Sean was only one part of a long line of good coaches, Mack most recently. Archie did this on his own.
Sean can recruit . Archie coaches the game better. From the sideline, there might not be a better coach in the game. Calapari said something similar on Selection Night.
Indiana showed incredible patience with Kreane. They've never been the same since Bob Knight left. Davis got into the Final Four his first season basically leaving the team he inherited from Knight on auto pilot.
Archie used transfers to build his teams at Dayton. 85% of this thing is recruiting . Motta is finding out in Columbus how quickly it can all unravel. In his case, his staff has let him down. He replaced a guy last season. He needs to ace another now. People forget the assistants when a program is measured. Revenue , budget, facilities-they all matter. But quality assistants are absolutely essential for a sustained winning program . It's a tradition-rich program that Arch inherits . Indiana will forever be s hoops school. They need to be a national factor .
There's enough talent that I can hope for maybe a tournament bid next season. Bryant is frustrating and you can't build a reliable defense with him, so him going to the NBA may be a favorable thing. Losing OG will be the biggest hit to the team, can't see them being that dominant.
Keeping talent within the state of Indiana may always be an issue for the school.
I went to St. Bonnies and Dayton is in our division, I had watched. A lot of their games over the last few years. The are always well coached play solid D and like the 3. I am glad he is leaving our conference.
So last Monday, Tony Bennett had an initial meeting in Atlanta with Indiana that went well, but he, ultimately, decided that he was comfortable where he was at Virginia...which is not surprising.
Indiana really only targeted Bennett and Archie Miller, who was aggressive in pursuing the job. Alford was never considered for the job and he knew that before UCLA played Kentucky. Once it was clear that Bennett was a no-go, things moved very quickly with Archie Miller. Overall, I think Indiana got a pretty talented, young coach.
Virginia fans should feel pretty good about Bennett staying there for the long haul if they had any concern that he might not.

I steer clear of those. IU fans hate all of our best players/coaching moves. Not completely unwarranted, but vastly overdone at times.

Which is why I'm fine not getting Alford

I find it hard to believe they never approached Alford as they seemed to be waiting UCLA's season out...
