Paul McCartney album from late 80's pretty unremarkable album
but with rerelease is 9 demos that elvis costello and mccartney did together of songs they co wrote at the time

they are amazing why in the world didn't they just release these at the time

"unremarkable" is pretty tough

it was really a turn-around album for him, much better work and better received than the several before it

and it was/is pretty good. if you're a post-beatle mccartney hater it won't sway you, but it's really good if you like him

and yes, the elvis stuff is great
RAM...is still one of the best I have ever heard

no i love macca
i think his first few albums are great
including red rose speedway

but listening to the elvis demos and final tracks

the demos are fantastic the final tracks of same songs are bland and boring
you see that he was motivated to have radio hits that making compelling music
I looked up this album on wikipedia

and just browsed his discography. I am quite surprised how negatively most of his albums were received critically. I assumed he would sneeze and it would be universally praised.

Went to ITunes and listened to the demos. IMHO what makes them sound so fresh is their rawness. McCartney had a tendency to overproduce his music. These songs, using mostly acoustic guitars and rough harmonies, that were never meant to see the light of day in their current state sound amazing. Another great listen is Lennon's stripped version of Double Fantasy.
I look at Flower in the Dirt amd Off the Ground as almost one album...

... both were, IMO, upgrades from his previous record Press to Play and signaled a new era for McCartney.

Flowers In the Dirt has some great songs and in a way was reminiscent of old McCartney.
