Gsellman
DanMetroMan : 3/28/2017 1:21 pm : link
has a SHOT to be DeGrom Jr. Not saying he'll be that good but there are a lot of similarities. Plus pure athletes, raw when drafted, good height, late added velocity.
I'm secretly pumped
sshin05 : 3/28/2017 1:22 pm : link
about Gsellman. When fellow major leaguers say your stuff is nasty, Mets probably have something with him. He's one of those came out of nowhere types ala deGrom.

was one of my few low lights this spring. Was further away than I expected. Wasn't missing bats (FULLY understand he's only 1 year from TJ) just looked like a guy who shouldn't even really be on our radars until mid 2018.

Saw him pitch for the first time this spring, reminds me of a taller Mejia with his delivery a little. Plus he (Molina) looks menacing on the mound.

A while back, I asked a long time scout which pitcher Gsellman reminds him of. Smirked, nodded and looked over at Darling. "That guy right there".

Robert Gsellman's stuff is stupid good. Everything down, down, down. Rotation spot secure, he struck out the side in the first inning today.

Did the same thing Dan. Took him in the 6th round (each team keeps 6 guys, so closer to 12th round in normal draft). Other pitchers who went nearby were Wainwright, Nola, Gausman, Moore, Odorizzi. Compared to those guys, gotta be more bullish on Gsellman.

He's the total package. Hopefully he stays healthy. High character, hard worker, outside of always being worried "later" velocity spike guys there the red flags just aren't there. Big fan (and I say that as someone who saw him when he was 89-91 with Savannah and though "meh")

People groaned like it was a clear "Mets fan" pick. I have literally zero interest in over drafting a Met just to have a Met on my team. Sure it's fun to watch your own guys but I'm not taking a guy just for "fun". The next 5 SP taken were Joe Ross, Drew Smyly, Odorizzi, McHugh and Liriano.
who cares if it's a Mets fan pick
pjcas18 : 3/28/2017 1:40 pm : link
I had Harvey and Thor in keeper leagues well before everyone else because of knowing my team. It pays off if you get it right. if you take them late-ish it's a gamble that's worth it.

Living in Boston I also grabbed Betts and Bogaerts a year before they were well known.

Marcos Molina hit 96 MPH with his fastball in the 3rd inning.

Exactly. In keeper leagues, if you're a Met fan, you could've scooped up Thor, DeGrom and Familia (in points leauges) before anyone else. Even Daniel Murphy was a guy that Mets fans likely drafted higher than others last year.

Great news on Molina. He'll be a fun guy to track in the minors to see if he can get his career back on track this year.
The key to Gsellman's transformation
ZGiants98 : 3/28/2017 1:46 pm : link
once again has to do with Warthen and his slider IMO. Yes, Gsellman's velocity might have bloomed late since Savannah but he was hitting mid 90s by the time he was in Bing (I mentioned him as backend depth there) but he still wasn't on anyone's radar. Gsellman was mostly a sinkerballer though. Since he's worked with Viola/Warthen magically a slider is now a + pitch to team with his heavy sinking fastball and woila!! Instant stud and his Ks have spiked.

Molina
DanMetroMan : 3/28/2017 1:49 pm : link
was throwing hard even at the very beginning of ST but he wasn't getting swings and misses and was getting beaten up pretty good. (5.87 era 7.2 innings 8 hits 3 walks 3 k's). He, Dunn and Szapucki are the 3 "dream on" arms they have (maybe Planck as well). I like Molina a whole lot, just was disappointed with the ST swing and miss. Luckily they aren't counting on him right now.

I think when it comes to Keith Law it mostly boils down to a few things 1. He's snarky and a know-it-all. That's his personality which in itself can be off-putting. Even his writing on his other interests (board games, yes board games) and things culinary related can come off as pompous. That said I find him to be highly intelligent, very well informed and I appreciate his ability to disagree with the masses. I also like his style of writing. Both intelligent yet also easy to comprehend.

2. Fans of teams tend to overrate their prospects (often hilariously so) so when you get tons of questions like "I've read some scouts think Nimmo can be a Mike Trout type" he not only chooses to respond. He does so with some angst. Somehow there is a narrative from EVERY fan base that he hates their team.

I much prefer a critical writer than ones that are comically positive. Bernie Pleskoff is unreadable to me. Every write up swings way over the top positive. Most recently saying Montgomery (a solid but not huge talent in the Yankees system) was somewhere between David Price and Chris Sale. Previously indicated Dom Smith was a "can't miss star" cmon

Somebody was just talking about his hard contact % again the other day. I think he still smashes the ball harder than anyone in baseball or at least he's close to the tippy top.

alwyas have.... I feel he's one of the best in the business. If I had to be critical of anything its that once he makes up his mind about something he tends to stick to it no matter what. Sometimes he can take years to turn around on guys. Honestly, that's really fine too though. He trusts his eye and I like a guy that will stick to his convictions even against the main stream which seems to just regurgitate off of each other.
That was a great play by Ces.

Law IMO has tempered his snarkiness quite a bit in recent years. He used to be insufferable. I'd be embarrassed for him, being a public figure and being such a douche bag.

He's mellowed a lot.

But some topics definitely set him off. Like Tebow and Mets fans trolled him on it for a while on twitter. I think he realizes that now.

Montero has made the team
ZGiants98 : 3/28/2017 11:35 pm : link
Mets think Lagares might be ready for start of season. Collins is hinting that he might carry 8 relievers to start (I mentioned they might do this}. In that case nobody off the 40 man would make the team. Bench would be TJ Rivera, Flores, Lagares, and R. Rivera. Ty Kelly and Conforto go to AAA.

Rotation and pen is likely decided after Matz makes his start this Thursday or Friday. Something tells me he gets cleared too. Lugo pitching back to back means there's a good chance he gets carried in the pen at the start of the season.
Weird scheduling
sshin05 : 3/29/2017 10:45 am : link
After today's game, Mets play an exhibition game on Friday and nothing until Opening Day on Monday. Lots of downtime for the team. April will be important with a ton of division games.

IF TRUE (again this is mostly whispers) it would mean either they are confident on Matz or will go with Wheeler. Some have suggested Wheeler would make the OD roster as something of a "gift" and then be sent to AAA.
