The commentary from Collins yesterday is a little fishy to me. I almost wonder if they are trying to push him a bit. How hurt could he be if they went right back to letting him throw a day later?
Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen said Monday that Steven Matz is working on shortening his arm angle to put "less bang" on his troublesome left elbow.
Altering pitching mechanics to compensate for discomfort in a specific area is often how minor injuries turn into major injuries. Matz has been scratched from his final turn in the Grapefruit League rotation due to irritation in his left elbow, and he felt some lingering tightness Monday while throwing on flat ground from 70 feet. The young southpaw is ticketed for the 10-day disabled list to open the 2017 regular season. Seth Lugo is probably going to take his spot.

for Matz. Every start he does make you're going to hold your breath hoping he gets through it and doesn't wind up on the DL or another TJ after the start.
I guess it's kind of gravy though in some regards because at one point I thought I read his career was almost over before it even really started with all the arm injuries in the minors and the difficult recovery.
Would be less than people were expecting but maybe we shouldn't be surprised. The facts re: Chapman were worse and more conclusive than Familia so a lesser suspension would make sense.

Agree 100% and Ive said that since the beginning. If Chapman got 30, Familia should get less.
I would have gone with Lugo. Wheeler has absolutely no chance of opening the year in the rotation and still pitching into September let alone helping in the playoffs. I guess they will just accept that. I'd still go with Lugo and open Wheeler in the minors but I have no say lol
that Darling sort of questioned Matz's "toughness" and then the articles come out where Sandy apparently seemed frustrated with him.
It's a hard spot for him though no? Wouldn't you rather him "over-report" mild elbow soreness/tenderness and let the trainers/doctors make the decision on how to proceed rather than him try to pitch through it? Harvey tried to pitch through things for a while last year, despite there clearly being an issue, and he got rocked a bunch of times and neither him nor the Mets were better off for it.
I get that we need more innings from Matz, but I'm more than OK with him taking it a bit easy here in March if something didn't feel right.

I'm not one to judge someone else's health. I have absolutely no clue regarding Matz. I was merely commenting on the fact that Darling sort of threw it out there and then Sandy (apparently, because I'm only reading the quotes in the paper) displayed some frustration. It just leads me to believe this is an ongoing theme. Not taking sides either way.
go with Lugo too since Wheeler innings limit could be a problem, but i guess they'll cross that bridge when they get there.
But you are guaranteed not having Wheeler at the end of the season. It's as if his innings limit is 175 and maybe they push it to 200. His stated limit is 125. There is simply no way for him to go all season + playoffs with a limit anywhere near there (that doesn't even include his impact on the pen as he builds up innings). Do we know he can go a consistent 6 innings when he's yet to do so?
the organization was pissed at Montero. MRI's came back clean but he kept complaining that he was hurt. Who knows.
I don't see their situations as comparable
That's interesting. Mets brass was frustrated with Montero because his MRI's were clean but he was complaining of pain. The insinuation from Mets brass might be that they are frustrated with Matz because his MRI was clean but he was complaining of pain.
I know very strange. It sounds like MLB doesnt know what they are doing more or less.
Very true. Some of his injuries probably have led to his demise. How the heck did we get Walker for him and got out of Bastardo's contract?

Regardless of how it looks (or what eventually is said publicly) - there are no surprises...
Mets projected injuries - ( New Window )

The Mets are right to send a message to Wheeler and Matz.

Poor kid just can't put together a full season...

Only hit Wheeler has allowed through four is to the opposing pitcher. Four scoreless almost entire Miami starting offense.
Lugo's done: 4.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 3 SO, 3 HR. 83 pitches.
Final lines for Mets candidates...
Lugo:
4.1 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 83 pitches
Wheeler:
5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 70 pitches
TJ Rivera with a three-run homer off a lefty.
Mets brass is supposed to meet tomorrow to hammer out the roster. Wheeler has sure made a case for inclusion.
I thought he went into coaching.
Shecky refers to Wheeler as John Maine
1-2-3 inning for Paul Sewald who continues his great spring and could find himself in the Mets bullpen very soon.
Zack Wheeler: "I think today proved that I am ready." #Mets

THAT John Maine?

Thought I was losing it lol
Mets brass was impressed by Wheeler. On thing they will discuss is whether he has the stamina right now for rotation.

Lugo said he had trouble downshifting from high intensity of WBC.
