go with Lugo too since Wheeler innings limit could be a problem, but i guess they'll cross that bridge when they get there.
But you are guaranteed not having Wheeler at the end of the season. It's as if his innings limit is 175 and maybe they push it to 200. His stated limit is 125. There is simply no way for him to go all season + playoffs with a limit anywhere near there (that doesn't even include his impact on the pen as he builds up innings). Do we know he can go a consistent 6 innings when he's yet to do so?
I agree, why start his innings now, put him in extended ST. But if they are leaning towards starting him now, then it throws that whole program out of the window. I'm not sure how they will limit him in that case. Make him just throw 5 innings or less in the minors once Matz is healthy?
Unfortunately, I have to agree with you. I expect it to all 'click' this season - which is really, really scary.
Ironic that a rookie is taking him under his wing to help mature him a bit.

why not use up Wheeler's 125 to start the season? If he's healthy and effective why wait until July when he can pitch the end of the season. The Mets don't fact a team outside the NL East until May. Get off to a great start and set the tone for the season. Get Wheeler back and healthy in the mix for 2018 full season rotation.
Given Matz' status I'm fine with Wheeler in the rotation and use him up, then Matz and/or Lugo - depending on the other guys health.
In the playoffs ideally the rotation is Thor, deGrom, Harvey, Matz/Gsellman
with the other of Matz/Gsellmen being long-man in the pen.
like how the Mets (at least from the outside) seem like a pretty tight group and mostly pretty cool dudes. Who knows how true the rumors were under Omar of a clubhouse divide between the Latin players and the others (SSS of course but when I used to go to games really early I would see Ramon Castro holding court with quite a mix of guys). Even the top prospects seem like an overall class act/ good dudes... Conforto, Nimmo, Cecchini, Rosario, Lugo. Smith sort of has that lazish/aloof rep but nothing dastardly. A few years back (when I had even more time to waste) I occasionally communicated with a few minor leaguers and you would once and a while hear about some real pieces of trash (Valdespin the most public one).
on twitter, he seems to be a good dude, from his twitter persona at least.
just check out his twitter page, all positive from what I've seen (and you probably already follow him DMM).
Ike Davis seemed like a dick, and don't forget Tony Bernazard, and guys like Kris Benson (though maybe that's more his batshit crazy wife), and I am sure there are more. The Real Dom Smith Twitter - ( New Window )
Only way I consider going with Wheeler early is if Matz is out long
term... As of now, it looks like Matz might miss one start or two tops. What would we do after he came back? Send Matz to AAA? Doesn't make much sense.
I'd rather not name names of guys who haven't already been outed but they had one reasonably high pick who had no problem being openly racist, another that (never had this verified) supposedly claimed a parent was ill, set up a fundraiser and turned out it was a fraud. On the flip side Lance McCullers before he was picked was really hoping to be a Met. I haven't spoken to him in years but extremely nice, personable kid. Would have been huge in NYC

I know for a fact ike Davis is still considered one of the biggest jerks to ever play for the cyclones. That team has a certain relationship with the fans and local writers (college kids etc) and he treated more than one very poorly. Never liked him after hearing that. He even looks smug
The classic case of a player who thought (and acted) like he was way better than he actually was.
Carried himself like that from day one. They have a kid named Dale Burdick, I think he went 40th round. Anyway they give him a lot more playing time and opportunities than his ability would suggest which has me believing he's likely an organizational favorite as a human being. I know they love Anthony Dimino for that reason

Report: Familia susp. likely less than 30 gms
Billy Witz of the New York Times reports that Jeurys Familia's domestic violence suspension is "almost certain" to be less than the 30 games Aroldis Chapman received.
Familia was arrested in November on a domestic abuse charge in New Jersey after police responded to a call and found Familia's wife, Bianca Rivas, with a scratch on her chest and a bruise on her right cheek. The charge was eventually dismissed. Most assumptions have been that Familia's suspension would likely fall right in line with Chapman's, but Witz writes that Rivas and Familia have cooperated with police and baseball investigators and Rivas has denied that her injuries came from an altercation with Familia. Familila met with Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred on Monday and a suspension is expected to be handed down this week. Addison Reed will handle closing duties for the Mets while Familia is away.

MLB self interests. It's really that simple. Familia meeting with MLB just days after the WBC ends to sort through this is all you need to know. They couldn't care less that is just days before the season starts which is crappy for the team and their planning.
Both had good springs. Maybe Montero stuck because he can start too? Better long man/spot starter option and they don't care anymore if he pitches regularly like Lugo or he's not a pure relief arm like Sewald.

just a guess.
I also think part of it is "now or never" with Montero so instead of sending him back to LV to be cannon fodder roll the dice, give him his shot. if he fails he's basically done with the Mets.

Its all about the 40 man spot IMO. Montero is on the 40 and Sewald isn't. They both had good springs so the tie goes to the guy with the spot. Can always add Sewald later if Montero struggles but we dont even know definitely what's happening with Familia yet so for now Sandy wants to keep some flexibility open.
was one of my few low lights this spring. Was further away than I expected. Wasn't missing bats (FULLY understand he's only 1 year from TJ) just looked like a guy who shouldn't even really be on our radars until mid 2018.
has a SHOT to be DeGrom Jr. Not saying he'll be that good but there are a lot of similarities. Plus pure athletes, raw when drafted, good height, late added velocity.
about Gsellman. When fellow major leaguers say your stuff is nasty, Mets probably have something with him. He's one of those came out of nowhere types ala deGrom.

Saw him pitch for the first time this spring, reminds me of a taller Mejia with his delivery a little. Plus he (Molina) looks menacing on the mound.

A while back, I asked a long time scout which pitcher Gsellman reminds him of. Smirked, nodded and looked over at Darling. "That guy right there".
Anthony DiComo ✔ @AnthonyDiComo
Robert Gsellman's stuff is stupid good. Everything down, down, down. Rotation spot secure, he struck out the side in the first inning today.
up Gsellman on my fantasy team. Somehow that makes me a "homer" when I generally never have any Mets lol
Did the same thing Dan. Took him in the 6th round (each team keeps 6 guys, so closer to 12th round in normal draft). Other pitchers who went nearby were Wainwright, Nola, Gausman, Moore, Odorizzi. Compared to those guys, gotta be more bullish on Gsellman.

He's the total package. Hopefully he stays healthy. High character, hard worker, outside of always being worried "later" velocity spike guys there the red flags just aren't there. Big fan (and I say that as someone who saw him when he was 89-91 with Savannah and though "meh")

People groaned like it was a clear "Mets fan" pick. I have literally zero interest in over drafting a Met just to have a Met on my team. Sure it's fun to watch your own guys but I'm not taking a guy just for "fun". The next 5 SP taken were Joe Ross, Drew Smyly, Odorizzi, McHugh and Liriano.
I had Harvey and Thor in keeper leagues well before everyone else because of knowing my team. It pays off if you get it right. if you take them late-ish it's a gamble that's worth it.
Living in Boston I also grabbed Betts and Bogaerts a year before they were well known.

Exactly. In keeper leagues, if you're a Met fan, you could've scooped up Thor, DeGrom and Familia (in points leauges) before anyone else. Even Daniel Murphy was a guy that Mets fans likely drafted higher than others last year.
Great news on Molina. He'll be a fun guy to track in the minors to see if he can get his career back on track this year.
once again has to do with Warthen and his slider IMO. Yes, Gsellman's velocity might have bloomed late since Savannah but he was hitting mid 90s by the time he was in Bing (I mentioned him as backend depth there) but he still wasn't on anyone's radar. Gsellman was mostly a sinkerballer though. Since he's worked with Viola/Warthen magically a slider is now a + pitch to team with his heavy sinking fastball and woila!! Instant stud and his Ks have spiked.

Matz threw again today, including a few pitches from the rubber, and looked "pretty decent" according to the pitching coach.
They found inflammation. Early indication is he's opening on the 10 day DL.

Hear Steve Matz feels good today, day after he threw. Positive sign. Everything's comin up aces for #mets rotation
