NFT: Predators at Islanders, 7pm Game Thread

pganut : 3/27/2017 10:52 am
Hope you took yesterday to rest up because it's pedal to the metal time the rest of the way. Need to shake off this recent home game malaise and get back to the good side tonight.

Thomas Greiss in net. Alan Quine replaces Shane Prince, who was very ineffective in his ice time on Saturday. Thomas Hickey replaces Scott Mayfield tonight on the blueline.

Noteworthy in juniors, Mat Barzal has missed the last several games for Seattle, including the first 2 playoff games in their series with what most believe are the mumps. He had been quarantined, but a report from Saturday notes he's doing much better and was at the game in street clothes. That's a good sign.

Despite the loss Saturday, one bright spot we all see is Josh Ho-Sang. Love what he shows on the ice, and it's interesting to hear his thoughts about his teammates and how they've embraced him to add to his confidence. Good video here.

Let's Go Islanders
Both the Islanders and Rangers haven't won at home since February 19.

Pretty crazy. Kinda would like to end that tonight? It's a must win game.

I'm hoping we win in a very non-physical game as the Preds have Boston tomorrow and we need them fresh :)

At this point I don't see a reason to play Shane Prince. Quine can handle himself at the faceoff dot, and overall is just noticeably more effective then Prince.

And when the fuck, if at all, is Johnny Boychuk coming back. This is getting ridiculous.
Totally agree on Prince
pganut : 3/27/2017 11:25 am : link
In fact, I'd really like to see him plucked by LV in the draft. He's 23 with 1 year left on his contract at $850k/season. I've seen enough to know he doesn't really bring anything that isn't relatively easily replaced here.

Obviously, the Boychuk injury is more serious than they led us to believe. I've read he's better, but also saw reports earlier on, he was in a boot and on crutches. Pulock would have been a nice move, but we all knew that even in lieu of any Boychuk injury.

I'm still not real happy after the results against NYR & PIT to see what the Isles responded with on Saturday, at home. Critical game tonight (I know, no duh).
Minor NCAA FA news
pganut : 3/27/2017 12:22 pm : link
From the Isles website:
Quote:
The New York Islanders announced today that forward John Stevens has agreed to a two-year, entry-level contract.

Stevens, 22, served as captain of the Northeastern University Huskies this season and scored 28 points (five goals, 23 assists) in 25 games. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound forward helped the Huskies win a Hockey East Title and reach the NCAA Tournament in 2016. In four years at Northeastern, Stevens scored 106 points (26 goals, 80 assists) in 138 games.
More forward depth for BPT, I guess.

As for the guys tonight, I really want to see more urgency. That seemed to be sorely lacking Saturday. Play with a sense of desperation.
please win

If you're in the NY metro area, you can watch it on the MSG GO app. If you're out of state, I'd just look for a Reddit stream or hockey dot tv as alternatives.

What pganut said. If you go to reddit.com/r/nhlstreams at 7pm, you'll see a number of links to choose from. Pick the one that has the most "thumbs up" and make sure you have a quality adblocker on your browser as they can get tiresome.

95% of the time there's a quality HD stream available.

Good luck and feel better.

Boychuk:

"Johnny is close, it's good to see him out there today," Weight said. "Hopefully we can get two or three really good days of practice here and see what he has for us on Thursday, maybe he'll play Thursday or Friday, that'd be great."

Kulie (expected to miss Thu & Fri games):
Quote:
"He's got some discomfort, the plan of attack is to work every day and see if he can get back on the ice," Weight said. "It's not going to be longer than 2/3 weeks. Best case scenario would be the end of the week and I don't know that's going to happen."
Look it is plain and simple
The 12th Man : 3/27/2017 2:26 pm : link
We have to win at home. They need to win at least 6 of these last 8 games if not, I do not see us making the playoffs. They need to play with a sense of urgency. I think they played too defensively against Boston. Boston one of the top shots on goal teams in the league, I believe had us thinking D only. They need to play as they did against Pittsburgh, if not it won't make a difference if they get in. Let's Go Islanders!!!

I agree with this. They went away from the aggressive forecheck that fits their style. It was as if they were backing off because of Boston's size.
Here's an update on Frederik Anderson
Mike in Long Beach : 3/27/2017 3:00 pm : link
Which certainly impacts the Islanders.

Quote:
The Toronto Maple Leafs appear to have avoided the worst with Frederik Andersen, whose exit from Saturday's game at Buffalo gave their passionate fan base a massive scare with a playoff spot hanging in the balance. He's out for Tuesday's game against Florida but head coach Mike Babcock said Monday his No. 1 goalie is day to day with an upper body injury and that it's not a long term situation. Andersen took part in some of practice Monday and said after that he felt pretty good but didn't know exactly how long he'd be out. He said he got bumped into during the first period Saturday and was feeling a bit "off." He also said he agreed with the doctor's decision to take him out, saying it was good to take every precaution. Backup Curtis McElhinney will start Tuesday night.

A bit of a positive note here
Mike in Long Beach : 3/27/2017 3:09 pm : link
After puttering around between 20th and 25th in the NHL most of the year, the Isles' penalty kill is up to 13th in the league. Since February 23, the team has only allowed 4 power play goals, and is being scored on only 12.5% of the time.

this is great news but our power play though the puck possession has been great, we need to shoot the puck more. That loss to Boston was strictly due to the lack of a PP. Just think, we had under 20 shots on net and we had 12 minutes of PP. We had been doing much better but against Boston for some reason we regressed. When we shoot the puck good things happen, have to stop trying to get the perfect shot.
We're kinda fudged if Tampa wins tonight
mikeygiants : 3/27/2017 3:38 pm : link
and we lose. If there ever was a must win this is it.
Here's an idea
pganut : 3/27/2017 4:04 pm : link
How 'bout they come out firing? Even in some of the runs of good play, they've been passive. You know when a team hits the ice and has "that look" and they're on point...been a while since we've seen them play like that.

As I've said before (and I challenge the kids I coach with this as well), don't be afraid to be great. I'd love for the Isles, especially at home, to take it to these guys tonight. At some point, they'll realize they have everything to lose by not throwing the kitchen sink at their opponents in these final regular season games.
lol, I love this pic of ho-sang

8 games left
giantgiantfan : 3/27/2017 5:21 pm : link
they've dropped a few down the stretch here that would've really helped. I don't seem them getting in going any less than 6-2.
No mayfield tonight
JayBinQueens : 3/27/2017 7:02 pm : link
like his game.

Need to win this.

Let's goooooooooooooooooooooooooo
according to the broadcast
JayBinQueens : 3/27/2017 7:04 pm : link
#66 is now on PP1
I appreciate NSH saving Rinne for Boston
pganut : 3/27/2017 7:11 pm : link
But Saros is no slouch; very good numbers. We gotta beat him.
Isles fortunate NSH hasn't scored yet.
pganut : 3/27/2017 7:15 pm : link
Not looking very hungry so far...NSH has them on their heels. Need to settle down and get some time outside their own zone. Gotta get some jump.
Shit
pganut : 3/27/2017 7:26 pm : link
Deflected off a stick and in.
Excellent catch by the Isles video coach
pganut : 3/27/2017 7:27 pm : link
Definitely no goal, offsides.
and give it right back
timintey : 3/27/2017 7:31 pm : link
shit!
Ha
pganut : 3/27/2017 7:31 pm : link
So they give it away anyway; this one counts. I thought one of our forwards left too early while NSH was gaining the red line and it turned into a 3 on 2 with the goal. Those are the stupid mistakes we continue to make. The F left his backchecking task too early. It gave the Preds speed and numbers.
so done with Hickey!
timintey : 3/27/2017 7:34 pm : link
Jesus Christ!!!
They survived
pganut : 3/27/2017 7:38 pm : link
Under siege there for a while. Hope our PP took notes. Outside of one shift on O, I'm not at all happy with the effort so far.
Let's see
JayBinQueens : 3/27/2017 7:40 pm : link
if they can generate some zone time and shots here to close out the period
Not the worst it could be given some of the Isles' play
pganut : 3/27/2017 7:50 pm : link
And they did muster a couple of good shifts/chances late, so that's encouraging. Still, in no way did they come out and dictate the pace. Not a sign you want to see from a team that needs to be hungry.

This team just digs holes for itself. They gotta strap it on and ball out for 40 more minutes. Come on.
Anyone else get excited
giantgiantfan : 3/27/2017 7:51 pm : link

Great response. Dig the hole deeper.

Decide if you want to be bent over the couch or if you're gonna respond. Your season, fellas.
They don't look good tonight.
Patrick : 3/27/2017 8:16 pm : link
Flat footed, sloppy and low energy.

Maybe it's time to remind them every game is a playoff game right now.

Time for Ho Sang to flank JT and Lee.

About fucking time.

The worst part of this race is how fucking long it took to dump happy Jack. Three more wins and they are looking good right now. Maybe if they didn't get wiped off the ice by TB every game early on.

Fuck. It's frustrating.
I think I understand now
pganut : 3/27/2017 8:31 pm : link
Isles interpret "power play" as "pre-vent offense". Shameful. 0 for 6 Saturday, 0 for 2 tonight.
This team.
giantgiantfan : 3/27/2017 8:33 pm : link
That was just a disgraceful "powerplay" right there. This is not a playoff team.
holy fuck
JayBinQueens : 3/27/2017 8:41 pm : link

Ladd JT & 66
JayBinQueens : 3/27/2017 8:43 pm : link

exciting
stupid
JayBinQueens : 3/27/2017 8:47 pm : link
fucking penalty
They absolutely didn't need to call that penalty there
pganut : 3/27/2017 8:48 pm : link
Nor did Chimera need to put himself in that position.

At least they got one bak and it makes the 3rd a bit more manageable.
First hurdle cleared; penalty killed
pganut : 3/27/2017 9:09 pm : link
Now use that momentum to get back to even.
Ladd has been terrible tonight

!
10 minutes left
pganut : 3/27/2017 9:26 pm : link
And we still don't have 20 SOG. Again. In a playoff push.
Compounding that,
pganut : 3/27/2017 9:28 pm : link
The endless cycle of turnovers that kill any offensive thrusts. Their ongoing puck mismanagement is perplexing.

I could not agree more. I only wish we played the Rangers and the Penguins every night. I did not post during the game to try and change up the luck. Very disappointed with these last 2 games.
