NFT: Driving from North Jersey to Staten Island

GiantJake : 3/27/2017 11:37 am
I am going to a concert in SI on Friday and have heard about traffic problems around 278 and the Goethals Bridge. Unfortunately, I'll be traveling around evening drive time (6PM). Anybody have any advice on how to best navigate and what I can expect? Thanks.
Jake, Brian Regan?

My wife and I are headed to SI Friday to see him. I'm wondering the same thing about traveling from Jersey.

There is construction on the Goethals

But it's open. Just check the traffic maps. The "sneaky" way in is Rt 440 through Bayonne.

Yes, Brian Regan! My son and I have been big fans for years and I grabbed tix when I saw he was going to be in the area. Thanks to everyone for the info. I was considering the Bayonne route.

It does wonders for finding routes.
Bayonne is your only other option, really

driving down to the Outer Crossing, and then back up to the top of SI is an extra 30 miles or more.

Bayonne is not a good option -- It's being rebuilt right now to allow the bigger Panama Canal ships to pass underneath and is often fully closed - only one lane when it's open -- they don't warn you when it's closed either
Be careful

with the Bayonne Bridge. You shouldn't have a problem crossing into S.I., but with the major construction going on, they usually shut the bridge down completely @ 10-11 PM for the weekend.
The Bayonne Bridge construction is done

and the new road over the bridge is open. It's been open for about two weeks now.
thanks Dave

what a bloody pain that construction has been -- Bayonne is our passage of choice into SI - but there's nothing like getting all the way there and having to turn around
Out of curiosity,

I grew up there, a few blocks away from the Bayonne Bridge. I go there every weekend or two as my mom still lives there, and I always use 440 to get from the turnpike to downtown where the Bridge is. The construction took 2-3 years and was a big pain in the ass, according to the people I know that still live there. They still have to take down the old roadway under the bridge, but there aren't anymore closures or cones down on 440.
According to the Bridge's twitter account,

there are still some closures overnight, but even when there are, they open back up at 8AM until Midnight. So, that would explain why I didn't know that. I only go there during the day. It used to be closed alot during the day, too. Now it seems it's just overnight.
