Sidney Jones

Tore his Achilles during his pro day. Fantastic kid and fantastic player. I live in the UW district here in Seattle and I've met him a few times. Just wondering where you think he will get taken at and if we will look at him at 23 if there? If healthy he is the top corner in the draft IMO. DRC getting up there in age, him Jackrabbit and Apple would be a formidable trio that can mature together for years to come. That would give us a young secondary with Collins and Thompson at the back.

We saw last year players like Myles Jack and Jaylon Smith both coming of significant injuries get taken higher than expected.

What's your guys take?
He'll probably fall to the late 2nd

or 3rd round. Damn shame. If he's on the board in the third still, I wouldn't be upset if the Giants take him. You want to get an impact player that can contribute early in your first 3 picks especially, but at some point the upside is so great relative to the draft position that you almost have to make the selection.
No chance in round 1

Possibly in round 2 or 3

but he's really skinny and small framed.

Lattimore is probably the best CB in the draft, he'd be excellent paired with Apple but figures to be long gone.
I think it depends on a team's strategy. If the team is building

for the future and is looking down the road, then maybe they draft a talented player who will sit for a year. The Cowboys did it with Roger Staubach.

If your strategy is to build for the next game, then you don't draft guys who can't play now. Going back as far as HC Allie Sherman, I have never seen the Giants build for anything except the next game.
Even if healthy, 23 is early for Jones.

Zierlein on nfl.com had him as his 4th rated corner and 30th player. Boylhart gave him a 2nd round grade. Myles Jack and Jaylon Smith were both top 5 talents before their injuries.

Agreed. I wouldn't consider him until the third, and even then, would probably pass. Let's remember how many injuries this team had not to many years ago.
Very risky.

Look no further than Jaylon Smith last year in Dallas. Or Ifo Ekpre Olomu, former Oregon defensive back who never recovered from his knee injury.

Also something to consider: Dr. David J. Chao is a former NFL team doc and has a very interesting Twitter page where he discusses sports injuries. He says statistically speaking, athletes are exponentially more susceptible to an Achilles tear in their other leg after intially tearing an Achilles.

Sad because he seems like a very nice kid and a hell of a player, but he'll be back. I just don't know if I would risk it.

It's not a bad gamble for a team w a ton of picks like Cleveland. The issue is if he is a stud and gen sits a year you might only get one year out of him as the first year coming off of a major injury is a learning adjustment year. Year three they play great year 4 FA.

It's why Smith was such a stupid pick for Dallas. Wasted a 2nd for maybe a guy who at best might contribute at a high level
For 1 year before he hit FA. Glad they did it but after curbing Jerry w smart picks they fucked themselves.

with a 5th year option for 1st round draft picks. So if he misses all of 2017, whoever drafts him will still control him for 3 more seasons. If he needs 2018 to "adjust" to the NFL speed and recover from injury, then he'll still have 2019 and 2020 at "full strength".

Undrafted rookie free agents can be signed for 3 years. This is partly why La'el Collins' agent (supposedly) told teams not to draft him late. This way he at least hits FA one year sooner and can recoup some of the money he lost.
Smith was a risky pick in the 2nd

due to the nature of his injury, namely the nerve damage. If it was 'simply' an ACL tear with no nerve damage, I suspect he's taken higher.

I think the Giants have gotten away from those high risk, high reward

types and most of those they did draft several years back were not primarily risks due to injuries. so I doubt they would go for a Sidney Jones.
Perhaps in order to reverse the curse of

our healthy 3rd round picks getting injured year after year, the key is to draft one that is already injured in hopes they will at least obtain a healthy playable status?

I'd strongly consider a player of Jones caliber in the 3rd if the Giants believe he can make a full recovery.

Ok. It was
The UDFA who are 3 years. That's why that number got stuck in my head

Thanks for the clarification. For some
Reason i thought it was for all
Rookies after are 2.

But I do know some teams had a top 10 grade. If thats the case...he won't fall more than Jaylon Smith by much if at all because of the position he plays. I think he is gone before the 40th overall pick.
