Probably to keep from breaking the centers neck should the leader slip. I'm sure BB will come up with a counter (maybe have the center duck to get a flag.
As it was the play was legal if no contact with an O lin men or if contact was initiated by the OL. Now it take the guesswork of who initiated contact on some of those plays out of the equation, and it's just flat out not allowed anymore.
Reminds me of taking the 5 yd facemask penalty away. No judgment needed anymore by the officials, it's just a 15 yd penalty if there's a facemask. Now with this the officials don't even have to think about who did what. If it's done, it's a penalty.
At first, I liked the idea of letting a guy jump over...
but then I thought it is probably the right thing to stop them from jumping over the center. There is a reason why he is being protected. Teams will be requiring their center to raise up immediately after the snap and we are going to have some injury problems
I don't see something in the game that they're trying to change with a bogus rule about safety, I see a possibly more remote injury scenario that they're trying to prevent. It might not be a very likely occurrence, but if it happens once it's not going to be pretty.
Wasn't saying they started it. I just saw the Patriots brigade on the tweet acting like the league was going after them.
And I agree with Eman. I think it was because it's a hard call to make live: whether it's a clean jump or not. I'm not down on this.
Patriot fans think the sun rises and sets with them, it's just an odd fascination they have with themselves and their team. They think EVERYTHING is related to them somehow, it's the six degrees of being a Pat fan.

I couldn't agree more. That team and their fans need a humbling experience - like loosing to the Giants again in the Super Bowl.

It really is a strange narcissism with some of these Pats fans.
The play is unfair and should be banned. Think about it. The only way to block the blocker it is to position a defender in front of his own kicker to "catch" the would-be blocker.

This nails it. The "leaper" play only became prominent because the NFL banned the ability to line up directly over the snapper due to injury concerns. But the rule as implemented made it the refs judgment as to who initiated contact and whether there was any contact to begin with. So an outright ban of it makes sense to remove ref judgment from the equation.
As it was, teams started to have to think about holding a roster spot for an exrta longsnapper, just in case. This rules helps to keep them safe and alows that spot to be used elswhere.
I'm ambivalent on it. I don't know the motivation for the change.

I don't think the players will complain about banning it.

Let's outlaw interceptions, people get injured during the returns and it hurts the QB's feelings.
The only thing lamer than that rule change is the predictable wussy reaction here on BBI.

Better still, having Brady & Belichick pack it in.

It seems as if they want to turn the game into a scripted scrimmage. If you don't want teams to be able to block kicks, just do away with XP and FG.
