Sorry to start yet another burger thread, but I just had to get this off my chest. I went to shake shack for my first time yesterday. Wow, talk about over-rated. The burger was completely average, and the overall experience was no different than all the other fast-casual restaurants out there. I make a better burger at home, and have other local options that are just as good or better. 100% meh, and yet another millenial fad IMO.
I think they all closed. That one pounder causes some severe indigestion.
Pro tip- Order the small fries if you want them. It's enough for like 2 people. They just fill a cup and place it in a paper bag that like overflows with fries.
I have never had Shake Shack though.
I used to live across the street from the original 5 guys in NoVA, and liked it, always hated the super greasy fries there. Never tried Shake Shack or Smashburger or Whataburger or any of the other fad places.
but a Mooyah opened near me and the kids want to go.
Has anyone heard of Mooyah?
I hadn't until it opened.
Seems like a new step up from fast food burger chain opens every week.
I think it's the price. You can get like a 4 patty burger for cheaper than five guys. Also open pretty late. But in terms of outright quality it doesn't compete with five guys, nor do I think that's really their market.
That's the thing. As much as I do like the place, I'll never wait on those lines.
In N Out is usually always mobbed with a long line. I can walk right in at 5 Guys regardless of the time of day.
In the LA area, I actually like Tommy's (chili cheeseburgers) better than In N Out.

Agree with all of this.
It's the kind of burger you can eat plain on a bun it's that good.
Just saw this and that's my reaction as well, although I think my description was a bit more...colorful

bit overpriced and not something i'd wait in line for, but it's probably the best fast food burger available in the northeast. Before Shake Shack (and 5 guys), we were basically stuck with Mcondalds or something like that if you wanted a quick burger.

It's weird because I never see lines for Shake Shack anymore. I love in Forest Hills and if I want a burger at SS, there's literally no line and I'm out of there with my food in 10 minutes max.
A) A really good restaurant burger
B) Five Guys
I've been to Cali and had In N Out, it's definitely a good burger but overhyped imo. It's not on a different level from a good Shake Shack or Five Guys location.
Five Guys outright is meh.
Smash Burger is the best of them all.
Five guys is good too - but way greasier and way more expensive for fast food. Their cajun fries are solid though. Plus, they don't have a drive thru - or at least I've never seen one. And I usually have to drop the kids off at the pool about 20 minutes after eating there because of the grease.
The rest are second tier - and brick and mortar spots like Shake Shack and Steak and Shake can be hit or miss depending on location and whether or not you're drunk.
My kids like Five Guys
I agree with BurgerFi. One just opened here in town and I like there burgers more than Smashburger or 5 Guys.
Also if NYers wait on line, they will always say the food is marvelous. Some people are just born followers

But the one close to me went out of business

There are still plenty of Cheeburger Cheeburgers. Definitely my favorite of the aforementioned....but I almost put them in a different category from In and Out, Five Guys Etc. because it is slightly more formal dining.

Yeah it's like a Johnny rockets old school burger joint (certainly better).
here. - ( New Window )
Haha, yeah I don't know. Walk up to counter, place order, eat, leave. That's usually what I do.
Top seed is still In and Out but don't visit as often since I live on the east coast.
Also, I know there aren't too many - but here on the Island we a couple of BurgerFis. I had a great burger there the other night with my youngest.
I got so sick to my stomach from Five Guys, I will never try it again.
I like Bare Burger better than all these options.
Habit burger is pretty good. Charbroiled burgers. Good onion rings.
Biggest complaint I hear about them is that the fries are bland to which I say:
A. Make you you salt them - they don't pre-salt their fries.
B. Get them well-done
C. Get them animal style - special sauce, grilled onions, and cheese. Essentially West Coast Disco Fries.
The burger was very juicy and majority brisket meat. Bun was soft and delicious.
Maybe it was because you crave red meat in China, but it was delicious. If it was a local joint I would frequent it.

Yes! get them well done. a must.
