NFT: What current shows are we watching?

DanMetroMan : 3/28/2017 1:08 pm
My wife and I are big into comedies. At the end of the day we like to have dinner and just veg out watching silly shows. With Netflix, Hulu etc the traditional "2 seasons" fall/mid-season stuff no longer really exists. What shows currently on are people watching?

We started watching Pete Holmes show on HBO "Crashing" which has a bunch of big stars from Comedy. I wouldn't call it great or hilarious but I enjoy it and recommend it if you like shows about standup (for which there are seemingly tons)

-Started watching "Insecure" (also on HBO). It's about a single black woman and is a comedy in a slice of life type of way. Dating, professional life, race etc. It's not as good as Atlanta or Louie but if you like those type of shows I recommend Insecure.

- Not yet back but "Catastrophe" returns in a few weeks. Really funny show on Amazon. Basic premise is an American Businessman knocks up a woman in England on a one night stand. Easy viewing.
Well Dan

I watch a LOT of ID channel shows.
Also enjoy Travel/History/Discovery channel/Nat Geo etc.

There's a lot of good stuff there if it's of interest to you.
Crashing
pjcas18 : 3/28/2017 1:13 pm : link
has funny lines, but it's pretty depressing if that's really what the life of a comedian is like and it seems kind of legit.

I like the TBS show The Detour.
Not comedies....
ZGiants98 : 3/28/2017 1:14 pm : link
But The Americans, Billions, and Legion. I still watch TWD although it's not as good as the previous 3. Eagerly awaiting Better Call Saul and the Leftovers.
Angie Tribeca
Steve L : 3/28/2017 1:15 pm : link
starts up again in a couple weeks. Stupid Naked Gun/Police Squad type show but funny as hell.

Santa Clarita Diet was funny too.
I'll stick to comedies since Dan mentioned that in OP
Metnut : 3/28/2017 1:18 pm : link
We're watching Crashing too. It's "OK" but subjectively appealing to me since we go to a lot of comedy shows in NYC and know a lot of places that the show is set in.

Superstore is pretty good. Sort of goofier verison of the office. The wife likes it more than me.

The Good Place was the best new comedy of the year IMO. Starred Kristen Bell and Ted Danson. Only a 10 episode first season. Michael Schur (Parks & Rec) wrote it. It's heavily serialized and throws a ton of plot twists at you. Smart show. Reallly recommend it if you're looking for something new & interesting to watch.

Brooklyn 99 comes back soon and we watch that too. It hasn't ever gotten a lot of buzz, but it's a steady comedy that's gotten better each season and the writers have really pegged the characters down. Has a lot of Parks and Office alum in the writing staff. The Sargent plays a phenomenally hilarious straight man.

Totally forgot TWD on Sunday.
Watched Medicis on Netflix

it was soap opera-y but enjoyable if you like historical dramas.

Chappelle just put out two new standups on Netflix also; those were good.

DanMetroMan : 3/28/2017 1:31 pm : link
not ashamed to admit we watch a lot of television. Can't wait for Narcos to come back (oddly little information about season 2 even production wise)

- I like Superstore quite a bit. It's quirky. NBC stated they wanted to get away from these kinds of shows and go with the CBS more "broad" comedy but this and the Good Place are arguably their best comedies and both are more of the "quirky" type they supposedly wanted to avoid.

- Tried watching Lady Dynamite thanks to the strong reviews but my wife hated it so we gave up after 1 episode. I'd give it another shot. It's very "out there" so I'm guessing in the right mindset it would be better

-Kimmy Schmidt returns soon, I really enjoy that show

-Master of None soon

-Santa Clarita Diet isn't amazing but a solid watch
Billions is the only one airing now
Young Elijah : 3/28/2017 1:32 pm : link
Better Call Saul and Suits
Anybody else feel overwhelmed with all the options we have out there?
ZGiants98 : 3/28/2017 1:34 pm : link
I used to pride myself on watching the best stuff out there (was never really into mindless or reality stuff) but it's gotten to the point where it's almost impossible to keep track of it all. Even the top echelon shows...
i'm down on comedies
UConn4523 : 3/28/2017 1:35 pm : link
i mainly just watch Silicon Valley which comes back soon.

Waiting for the Leftovers and Better Call Saul more than anything.

but Fargo season 3 is back soon (mid April?).

I like how they do it in anthology format, with a new cast and plot each season. Works better for Fargo than it did for True Detective.

This season adds Ewan McGregor and Jim Gaffigan among others.

Ah...
ZGiants98 : 3/28/2017 1:36 pm : link
Forgot about Fargo. Hell yeah.
Another vote for The Detour ... Natalie Zea is
Popeye : 3/28/2017 1:36 pm : link
one very hot 42-year-old. She's funny. Was Olyphant's ex-wife on Justified.

On the horizon, in April I think ... The Leftovers, Fargo, Veep, and Better Call Saul.

Right now, it's all about The Americans.
Fargo is awesome
oghwga : 3/28/2017 1:37 pm : link
Last Man on Earth is pretty good.

Veep is on the way as well.

+1 for Catastrophe. That show is great.

can't wait for Veep too

..probably forgetting a few more. Oh yeah, The Strain usually starts over the summer. I believe this is the last season. Love that show.

NHL Playoffs. Rangers need to go on another deep run. Nothing beats it.
If I'm not watching sports or Fox News

Sleepy Hollow
Hunted (season ended last month)
Man Seeking Woman
Archer
Legion is at the top of my list right now

They took what is becoming a tired idea (another superhero/comic story) and made it very unique. It's really hard to explain but it doesn't even feel like a superhero show. Noah Hawley, the writer/producer said he wants it to be like watching television on acid. And while I wouldn't go that far, it's definitely not far off. It can be kind of disorienting and there's a real sense of "ok...what the hell is happening here?", but in a good way. And there seems to be one or two jaw dropping moments in each episode.

Also like Crashing with Pete Holmes on HBO. He's just an endearing guy and it's really easy to root for him. When he struggles you feel bad, and when something good happens you're genuinely happy.

Also happy that Animals is back on HBO. The whole anthropomorphic animals/"see, they're just like us!" thing certainly isn't new but they really nail it. They also get some great guest stars to do some really bizarre roles, like last weeks 3 minute blip of Jason Alexander as algae with an existential crisis.

I've been dvr'ing Sun Records, about the labels early days and guys like Cash, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc. I've enjoyed the 2 episodes I've seen and while it's nothing ground breaking, Keir O'Donnell is excellent as legendary DJ Dewey Phillips.

Really looking forward to Fargo coming back (there's Noah Hawley again. Guy is really on a tear). In my opinion it's right there with Breaking Bad as TV that transcends the medium.

Speaking of True Detective, they may bring back a 3rd seasons now (no interest). The problem was moreso with Fukunaga leaving than it was the format, IMO.
Homeland and Billions back to back on Sunday nights

both having strong seasons nearing the end

Better Call Saul and Leftovers coming out soon...Game of Thrones soon after that.

I usually have 2 shows going at a time, maybe 3...been watching Peaky Blinders too on Netflix, pretty good halfway through season 1

Agree, nothing wrong with the format, just didn't work for TD (for a variety of reasons, director being just one).
Atlanta was excellent

Agree about Atlanta, and Glover really is a star, one of those people that seem to excel at anything they dip their toe into. I was psyched when it was announced he'd be playing a young Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo movie.

Currently binge watching Breaking Bad
NYG27 : 3/28/2017 2:38 pm : link
We are in the middle of season 4 and that had taken up majority of all the TV time that my wife and I are currently watching.

Love watching Breaking Bad and hooked on it but part of me wants it to end so that we can watch other shows.

as in we typically opt for the vegging on sitcoms. Also, with two young kids, the family sitcoms are ideal. My 4 year old now looks forward to watching Modern Family...

Tuesdays and Wednesdays are dedicated to ABC. We're into The Middle, American Housewife (Katy Mixon's voice is unbearable, but being based in Westport hooked my wife) The Real O'Neal's, Modern Family and the Goldberg's. We're also DVR'ing The Partner (spinoff of The Profit) on CNBC and Tosh.O Tuesday nights.

Friday's is Shark Tank, which my wife is IN LOVE with. She goes gaga over that show.

Monday's and Thursday's are typically re-run nights or catching up on older comedies. A few weeks ago I started watching Always Sunny, so that was eating up some of our time, but now we're back to the old re-runs of Modern Family, The Simpsons and Everybody Loves Raymond.

Comedies
mavric : 3/28/2017 3:19 pm : link
The only 2 I am currently watching are

- "The Mick"
- "Trial and Error" (with John Lithgow)

I will be watching "Archer" when the 8th season debuts next week.

Hard to find comedies worth watching these days. But the two I am watching get a few laughs out of me and Archer is...well, it's Archer. Should be interesting this season as they go back in time to the 1940's when the crew was young. I think the premise is based on Archer being in a coma (remember the last show of season 7) and he's in dreamland. An interesting twist that keeps Archer relevant year after year
Isn't Insecure on Hulu?
Section331 : 3/28/2017 3:24 pm : link
We've watched a couple of episodes, it is pretty funny, the "Broken Pussy" episode was hilarious. Nothing groundbreaking, but Billions is probably the only current show we watch. Other than that, we've been catching up on Better Call Saul (which I love), and Blackish, which isn't great, but better than I expected.

is my favorite show going right now. Hulu original series, which by the way has some other great shows.

It stars Aaron Paul (who also produces it) and Michelle Monaghan and it's about a cult in Westchester/NYC that is trying to modernrize/go national while dealing with family issues, crime, and other interworkings of the cult. Really great acting and while not necessarily an original story, it is pretty addicting. Highly recommend. You can do a free trial for Hulu I believe and bang out the first season in a week easy.
This is a bit older show but it is fabulous stuff
montanagiant : 3/28/2017 4:06 pm : link
The show is called "Underbelly" and it covers all the most notorious criminals in Australia. It is done in a docudrama style with narrative but it covers everything from the initial Heroin importers to the Aussie Italian mob. Very well done. I originally caught it on the HDNet channel on Direct TV, but it has all the seasons on Exodus for Kodi

Season 2 of the Missing was the best season of TV in the past 6 months or so. The actor that plays Baptiste needs an Emmy.

the Rock has an HBO special that we started lastnight called "Rock and a Hard Place" which he helps a juvenile correctional experimental program that selects 40 kids or so to do a 4 month boot camp to get out of their prison term. Some of the kids are facing 20+ years.

We watch the first 15/20 minutes but it was late and shut it off to watch fresh tonight.

I just finished watching the first season and liked it a lot. It's kind of ridiculous at times but very well made. Bryan Cranston is incredible in it. But the new fios on demand interface is fucking awful. Not only am I convinced that more shit costs money now compared to earlier but the interface is so clumsy and slow and terrible. Nearly every time I use the on demand I get angry. Fuck you Fios. It used to be fine with less graphics, bells and whistles. I'd call and complain but fios also has the worst customer service dept in known creation. Somehow I will make things worse by calling.
