Draft Riddle.

If 2 Quarterbacks, 2 Running Backs, 3 Wide Receivers, 2 Tight Ends, 3 Offensive Lineman, 4 Defensive Lineman, 2 Linebackers, 2 Safties, 2 Cornerbacks are taken before the 23rd pick. Who is the "Best Available Player"?

2 QB - Trubisky, Watson
2 RB - Fournette, Cook
3 WR - Davis, Ross, Williams
2 TE - Howard, Njoku
3 OL - Ramczyk, Lamp, Bolles
4 DL - Garrett, Thomas, Allen, Barnett
2 LB - Foster, Reddick
2 S - Hooker, Adams
2 CB - Lattimore, Humphrey

BPA = Jabrill Peppers?
...but here's a follow-up question about the fourth DL.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/28/2017 2:35 pm : link
If Derek Barnett drops to 23 because of the questions about his system fit and athletic traits, is he a no-brainer pick over, say, Peppers, McDowell, Njoku, Charlton and/or McCaffery? I've seen Barnett as high as the top five in some mocks, but there seem to be real doubts about how well his game translates.
One of the following:
allstarjim : 3/28/2017 2:35 pm : link
Tre White, Taco Charlton, Jabril Peppers, Malik McDowell, Melifonwu, Zach Cunningham, or *McCaffrey

*Assuming Dalvin Cook is the second RB taken and not McCaffrey, which is not a safe assumption at all. I probably will have McCaffrey going higher than Cook in my final 1st round mock, because of Cook's behavioral flag (which I think is fairly minor, but still an issue enough to drop him a little, possibly into the early 2nd round).

My pick in this scenario would probably be Malik McDowell. I think the Giants would take Charlton, though.

That said, with JPP and Vernon being two guys that play >90% of the snaps and both signed for 4 seasons, I would be surprised if they go DE in the first. Even if they wanted to limit JPP/Vernon to only 85% of the D snaps and got the pick some snaps inside, you're still probably only looking at 25-30 snaps/game for the rookie. And it's not like they need to groom a replacement for 1-2 years down the line as they do for say CB.

Outside of OL where the talent seems pretty thin, Giants don't have a glaring need at any of the premium positions (CB, DE/pass rusher, WR). Should make it an interesting draft.
It depends on who the three OL are....
Milton : 3/28/2017 3:11 pm : link
If it's Ramczyk, Bolles, and Lamp, my answer is Cam Robinson.
If it's Ramczyk, Bolles, and Robinson, my answer is McCaffrey.
Grab Charlton

Last season Vernon played with a hand injury and was limited. JPP missed a few games. If either guy goes down, don't you want another solid pass rusher up on the line? Giants messed up with Moore and possibly OO also.

Here's a good chance to get it right.
The Giants will never draft McCaffrey in the first.

We have three players with comparable skill sets in Vereen, Perkins and Draughns.

They definitely need more depth at DE, but I'm not sure you use a 1st round pick on a player that (if things go well) won't see more than 25-30 snaps/game for the next 3 seasons.

I'd guess they look for a DE on Day 2/3 to compete with Okwara/OO.

And not just signed for the next four years, but with guarantees and compensation among the top five in the NFL outside of the QB position. A DE would have to be BPA by a wide margin to justify using their 1st round pick on him.

Big deal! Who the hell are Vereen, Perkins, and Draughn that you would pass up a Pro Bowl quality RB because of them. If McCaffrey ain't your BPA, that's fine, don't draft him. But if he is your BPA, it's not like the likes of Vereen, Perkins, and Draughn should stand in the way of drafting him.

I would hope Christian McCaffrey is given consideration.
A: One of Fournette, Mccaffrey or Cook. Hope thats the pick.

You get half a point for guessing Peppers because he is second BPA.

Mccaffrey is a Home Run hitter, so is Cook and Fournette. Vereen and Draughns? Get real. Perkins has something in him but not that something that prevents you from bringing in a star skills player like one of these three RBs.

We aren't not drafting someone because of Shaun Draughn. And Vereen is injury prone with only one year left on his deal. You can do a lot more things with McCaffrey than you can with Perkins.
Giants will draft best OL

available in first round. Too bad Bolles will be long gone.

If they have a DE they rate higher that will be the pick.

First round pick will NOT be TE RB or LB. Giants do not value those positions as highly as other teams do.
I don't believe McCaffrey
allstarjim : 3/28/2017 4:22 pm : link
Will be the pick, but I don't believe the current running backs on the roster would preclude them from making the pick. Draughns is no sure bet to make the team. Only Perkins and Vereen are almost assuredly will be on this roster week 1.

I think they would prefer a more physical presence at RB than McCaffrey, though, and prefer to tap the position later in the draft where the positional value of taking a RB is more desirable.

Draughns will be lucky to surpass Darkwa

Not really a riddle, is it?
Big Blue Blogger : 3/28/2017 4:26 pm : link
Shouldn't a riddle have a factual answer, rather than a matter of opinion?

Anyway, it seems that the Giants should have some good options at #23, even if nobody drops unexpectedly.

Probably, yes... Robinson could be one of the three OL off the board, replacing Lamp or Bolles (hard to imagine Ramczyk not being among the first three taken, barring an adverse medical update). The two LBs are presumably Foster and Reddick. The four DL are likely Garrett, Thomas, Allen and Barnett. So, in the OP's scenario, Cunningham and Charlton seem to be available, with Robinson more of a question mark.
RB in the first would surprise me, even if he's arguably BPA.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/28/2017 4:48 pm : link
We don't really know how Perkins figures in the Giants' plans, but the combination of him and Vereen does at least relieve some of the pressure to take a running back early. I'm with the group that expects more of a complementary piece on Day Three, such as the much-discussed Samaje Perrine or - much later - a plugger/pass protector like De'Veon Smith. (Smith in the 7th or as a UDFA would bear some similarities to the Michael Cox pick in 2013, except Smith stayed at Michigan and might be a better pro prospect.)

Giants build defense around two-way DEs, Taco has the skill set ... it's his noggin I question.

Me thinks you're overrating based on need, me thinks Taco grades out above those two.

81_Great_Dane : 3/28/2017 5:21 pm : link
and I don't think I've ever seen an answer to any of them on BBI or in the press:

How do the Giants rank players? Do they use a point system? How do the points work? What are the categories for scoring? Do they differ from position to position? (For example, I remember reading an article from the 1970s that said the Cowboys used something like a 1-6 scale where "average" was 2, because they'd decided that with draft prospects they were grading degrees of excellence, and they needed to grade small differences in excellence.)

How big are the rows covering the first 32-64 players on their board? Are there 2 in row 1, 5 in row 2, etc?

How close together do players have to be to be grouped in the same row? (How many points is significant?)

How do they figure in position? How many points do they add for a DE, CB, WR or QB, and how many do they deduct for a LB or RB? Do OLBs get a different deduction than MLBs? Are Free Safeties scored differently from strong safeties?

this year if they are looking at guys with baggage, injuries or 2nd round grades at 23.

There seems to be more than the usual number of players with baggage or injuries. Not deep with blue chip talent but a lot of red chips on the table.

An extra 2nd and an extra 3rd could be valuable.
